Evaluation Question 3- What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?
1. What Kind of Media Institution
Might Distribute Your Product and
Why?
2. What is a Film Distributor and What
do They do?
• Person or company
• Work with people who market films
• Distribute films
• Set release dates
• Decide how a film is made available for viewing
• Help us find a USP in our film that we would be
able to market.
3. Examples of Distributors
Indie
Channel 4
CBS
Lionsgate
Passion River
Studio Canal
Seventh Art Releasing
Conglomerate
Disney
Fox
Universal
Warner Bros
Columbia
Sony
4. What’s the Difference Between Indie
and Conglomerate Distributors?
Conglomerates: These companies have a lot more money in
their budgets. They have multi media platforms onto which
they release their media products. Their main aim is to
generate high grossing films and gain massive financial profits.
By using their other media they are able to ‘swamp the
market’ by multiple places of release.
Indies: These companies have minimal budgets available, they
do not have a cross media convergence. Indie distributors
won’t have enough money in their budget to distribute their
film through a saturated release pattern. They would focus on
them having to rely on film festivals and DVD or online
release.
5. What Distributor Would you Choose to
Distribute
Your Product?
Studio Canal
• They’re a indie producer
• Past films: Total Recall and Non-Stop

6. Why Might They Choose to Distribute
Your Film?
• They’d be good partners to work with because
of their connections, marketing budgets etc.
Their previous films have been successful in
the thriller film genre.
• Other thrillers include: Total Recall, Non-stop
which are both successful thrillers.
7. What Sort of Services Would They
Offer You?
• We’ll expect them to release our thriller at various film festivals like
Cannes and New York International Independent Film and Video Festivals.
They released ‘Gone’ in this way which is a similar film to Replicate.
• They could create a buzz by using their other popular film titles to market
ours for example “From the makers of Terminator”.
• Using social media
• Viral marketing
• Guerilla marketing
8. Examples of Potential Marketing and
Creating a Buzz
• They could promote our social media through
their media sites. We could have Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram and snapchat sites.
• We could use gureilla marketing to organise a
press worthy event such as a flash mob in
busy places. This can show off our USP of the
Guy Fawkes mask.
9. Release Strategy
• Film Festivals
• Dvd release
• Online release (Netflix, Love Film etc.)
• Art house cinemas
This would give us a multi platform release strategy
• A ideal release date for us would be Wednesday
4th November, a day before Guy Fawkes night.
This would fit in with our use of the mask.
