Alcohol
 Blood Alcohol Concentration-the
amount of alcohol in a person’s blood
 Legal amount?
 Alcohol stays in the person’s system until
    the liver can metabolize it.
 Metabolize means to break down
 Liver activity 5 boys, 5 girls
 What are some things that affect alcohol’s
    influence on the body?
 Body size
 Gender
 Food
 Rate of intake
 Amount
 medicine

Factors that influence Alcohols’
Effects
 Ethanol: type of alcohol in an alcoholic
    beverage.
 Fermentation: the chemical action of yeast
    on sugars
 Depressant: a drug that slows the central
    nervous system
 Intoxication: the state in which the body is
poisoned by alcohol or another substance
and the persons physical and mental control
    is significantly reduced.

Alcohol is an addictive drug
 Liver:
    ◦ Fatty liver: fat build up in the liver and cannot
      be broken down.
    ◦ Cirrhosis: scarring of the liver and poor liver
function as a result of chronic liver disease
    ◦ Hepatitis: inflammation of the liver
    ◦ Liver activity-5 boys, 5 girls

Long Term Effects
50 deaths a day in US b/c of DUI
 1/3-2/3 of sexual assault involves alcohol
 25% of sexually active teens use alcohol
  before engaging in sexual activities
 25% of teenagers live with family
  members who abuse alcohol
 Teens are 5 times more likely to be an
alcoholic if they start drinking by age 21

Facts
 Binge drinking: drinking five ore more
  alcoholic drinks at one sitting.
 Alcohol poisoning: a severe and
potentially fatal physical reaction to an
  alcohol overdose.

Binge Drinking/ Alcohol Poisoning
 Mental confusion
 Coma
 Vomiting/seizures
 Slow respiration
 Irregular heartbeat
 Hypothermia or low body temperature

Effects of Alcohol Poisoning
 What are some of the effects on the
    body?

Effects of alcohol?
 Psychological dependence-a person
believes the drug is needed in order to
  function normally
 Physiological dependence-a person
has a chemical need for the drug
 Blood Alcohol Concentration-the
amount of alcohol in a person’s blood
 Legal amount?
 You?
 Friends?
 Family?
 Community?
 Society?

Who does alcohol affect?
 Write ½ page paper on who would be
