2. Madness
• Madness are from CamdenTown in London
• They formed in 1976
• Madness’s first notable musical award came in 1983 when
Chris Foreman and Cathal Smyth won an Ivor Novello
Award for best song for the international hit “Our House”
• They then won another Ivor Novello Award 17 years later
for an “Outstanding Song Collection”
3. Camera angles/ shots
• They include the band members in a specific shot, for example
when Lee is playing the saxophone they have a shot of him playing
the saxophone and when Chas singing is they then include him in
the shot
• Chas was not a former member of the band at the time but he
sang the lead vocals even though Graham was in the music video
and holding a microphone Chas was the main singer in this.
• They also have wide shots of the band throughout the music video,
this then starts to create a star image for the band by that they
have fun together and enjoy what they are doing
• There is mainly close-up shots in the music video, this shows that
they are showing more detail in what they are wanting to show in
the music video, for example when Chas is speaking at the
beginning they are just focusing on him and what he is saying. This
does link in with Andrew Goodwin's theory by that using camera
angles and shots are holding the music video together this
because if there wasn’t any camera angles or shots there wouldn’t
be anything on the music video.
4. Editing
• They use Goodwin's “Cut to the Beat” well,
by that when the music slightly chances
they change the shot. For example when
the shot is onChas and he says “One Step
Beyond” it then changes to the whole of
the band on the stage dancing around.
• Madness being a ska genre, have the
instruments representing their genre and in
this music video showing all the
instruments they play.
5. Lyrics and visuals
• Madness’s music video “One Step
Beyond” is a very simple song with
minimal words, but a lot different
actions happening within the
music video
• One step beyond is like a meaning
of a giant step that is beyond the
limitation that you can dream of
6. Location and setting
• The song is meant to be a happy,
get up and dance song, this is
showing this by that they have
the band on a stand dancing
around enjoying themselves.
They also had shots outside with
blue sky, showing positivity
• Most of Madness’s music video is
them singing live in one of their
performances, in Hope and
Anchor in Islington.
7. Mise-En-Scene
• All the Madness band members and Chas are wearing
something different, starting with Chas we see him wearing a
suit but without a tie, but looking smart, and glasses, we see
Graham wearing, a blazer aT-Shirt, and jeans, Chris is wearing
a checked shirt and jeans, mike is wearing a hat, glasses, a
black coat, and red jeans, lee is wearing a red hat, glasses, a
black jacket, and black trousers, mark is wearing a stripy shirt,
and black trousers, however you can not really see what Daniel
is wearing throughout the music video because he is behind
the drums and there isn’t any shots of just him in it and you
have Graham who is standing in front of him when there is a
shot of him in it. Looking at all of the band members clothing
we see that it shows that they are still an individual even when
in a band and that they are happy wearing not the same. The
props in the music video are of the band members and their
instruments, which is very simple.
8. The Rolling Stones
• The Rolling Stones are from London
• They formed in 1962
• The Rolling Stones celebrated their 50th anniversary in the
summer of 2012 by releasing a large hardback book called
50
• The Rolling Stones have managed to get 20 awards
• They got a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 1995 ,
alongside a Grammy Award for Best MusicVideo in 1995
9. Camera angles/ shots
• The beginning of the music video starts
off with a wide shot then goes in to a
close up shot and it is just focusing on
Mick Jagger and what he is doing, as he is
singing
• Then a few seconds after just focusing on
Mick Jagger he then comes between
Charlie and Keith, showing two of the
other band members and what they are
doing in the video.
10. Editing
• They use Goodwin's theory of
“Cut to the Beat” well, by that
when Mick Jagger says “you make
a grown man cry” for the second
time they then go onto a new
shot.
• The rolling stones are rock, blues,
and pop band and in this music
video they include a bass guitar,
electric guitar, and drums, which
is typical rock instruments which
they include in their music video.
11. Lyrics and visuals
• There isn’t a clear visual between lyrics
and the music video by that there isn’t
a narrative in the music video showing
what its about.
• Rock music videos are mainly live
performances, however it’s not filmed
at a live performance but its closely like
a live performance by that it is only
them featured in the music video and
they are using their instruments,
throughout the music video.
12. Location and setting
• The setting in “Start Me Up”
is very simple they are just in
an empty space with them
all there and enjoying
themselves singing away,
and playing their
instruments
13. Mise-En-Scene
• The music video starts off with Mick Jagger on his own
singing, he is wearing a gymnastic outfit at the beginning
he is doing some form of gymnastic moves
• In the whole of the music video it features the whole band,
this represents thatThe Rolling stones like to make an
appearance in their music video
• They all have quite simple outfits, but different from one
another, by that Mick Jagger is wearing a gymnastic outfit,
one of the guitar players is wearing a vest and jeans, the
other one is wearing a jacket a shirt and jeans, and the
drummer is also wearing a suit, and the last guitar player is
wearing a pale blue suit. All the band members have
different outfits on even the ones who are wearing a suit to
represent that they are different but a team
14. One Direction
• One Direction are an Irish British Boyband
• They Formed atThe X-Factor in 2010
• They have achieved five Brit Awards, four MTV
Video Music Awards, eleven MTV Europe Music
Awards, and nineteenTeen Choice Awards
• 4 UK Number 1’s
15. Camera angles/ shots
• The very first shot we see in this music video is
a white sheet of paper put into water that is
then getting developed into a picture, so that
we only get a chance to see what the picture is
because there is nothing else in the shot.
• Another in this music video is we see a mid
shot of Harry surrounded by photos and
putting some up, but very shortly chances a
shot to Niall, which is a mid shot of him as well.
• There is a close up shot with Liam singing to
the camera and focusing in front of him as
though he is singing to you.
16. Editing
• The band members are all do something with the
pictures at the beginning of the song, representing that
they got memories amongst these pictures and want
them in pictures
• The music video is mostly focused on pictures that they
have put out and showing all different pictures showing
what they have enjoyed and loved as children, and even
images of now what they look like
• They have plenty of pictures all around the room,
representing that they have a good life
• The audience get to know what the music video is like
by the beginning shots, by that they get to see one
direction with different pictures around the room, and
that it is what their song title say “The Story Of My Life”
17. Lyrics and visuals
• On one of the lines that they sing is “she
told me in the morning, she don’t feel the
same about us in our bones” meaning
that anything can change overnight, and
they have this experience
• This song is a narrative, they have stuck
to what the song lyrics say about “Story
Of My Life” by that they are showing
exactly what their life is like through time
and that it is their story of their life
18. Location and setting
• The location for their music video
is in a room where they can store
enough pictures, and see all there
happy memories that they have
had.
• We all see Zayn in a shot looking all
the different pictures that
surround him.
19. Mise-En-Scene
• Harry is wearing a black shirt with black
trousers, Liam is dressed really smartly with
a white shirt and a small black jacket, Louis
wearing a whiteT-Shirt, a black blazer, and
black trousers, with a black trousers, Niall
is wearing a greyT-Shirt and black trousers
and then Zayn is wearing a long sleeved
black shirt black trousers with braises
attached. All of them are wearing a
something smart in this music video, this is
like they are representing themselves and
what they are like.
