Internet has been the primary drivers for
transformational change
The 2012 Survey of Online Learning reveals that
the number of students taking at least one
online course has now surpassed 6.7 million
Internet has allowed distance learning to
change the manner in which education is
offered
Expansion Of The Community Concept
Through Global Interconnectivity
The concept of community has
been globalized
Community is no longer just a
locality concept, but anyone that
is connected through the Web
Time and space no longer are
barriers to educational availability

The "digital divide" is the expanding disparity
between economic and racial populations in
access to technology and the Internet
Wealthy and middle-class have greater access to
digital resources than their poorer counterparts
Programs, such as Comcast’s Internet Essentials,
offer low-income families Web access for low cost
Libraries have program to provide Internet access
for free
Many grants offer Internet access devices, such as
Google Chrome machine, at a low cost

US Census data predicts by 2050, there will
be no ethic group that is the majority
In addition, to traditional ethnic
population, other special populations, such
as mental/physical challenged individuals,
LGBT, will likely expand
There will a doubling of Asian and Hispanic
populations
All these population will need to
considered in community-based
educational planning
Population Trends: Aging
The “Baby Boomer” generation is the largest in
terms of size and percentage of the US population
By 2030, the 65+ population will double to 71.5
million and by 2050 will grow to 86.7 million
The trend is toward older Americans remaining in
the work force longer than their predecessors
Younger seniors are more techno-savvy and likely
to seek regular retraining to meet professional and
personal objectives
They will likely seek both traditional educational
vehicles , such as senior centers and brick & mortar
educational institutions, but also distance learning
alternatives
Summary
Community-based education will be heavily
influenced by the following:
 Proliferation of technology
 Globalization
 Changing population trends
 Increasing diversity
 Democratization of education
Challenges will Include:
 Finding funding and Resources
 Reducing the “Digital Divide”
Meeting these needs and challenges will require
greater collaboration between pubic and private
sectors

Transformation Created By Technology (Filmstrips to Steaming Video) In the past 20 years have seen more changes in educational technology than in the prior 50 years Internet has been the primary drivers for transformational change The 2012 Survey of Online Learning reveals that the number of students taking at least one online course has now surpassed 6.7 million Internet has allowed distance learning to change the manner in which education is offered
  • 5. Expansion Of The Community Concept Through Global Interconnectivity The concept of community has been globalized Community is no longer just a locality concept, but anyone that is connected through the Web Time and space no longer are barriers to educational availability
  • 6. Proposed Funding Strategies More public-private sector collaborations Eliminating the “Digital Divide”
  • 7. Public-Private Sector Collaborations Can not depend entirely on government funding Look for mutually beneficial relationship in seeking funding and resources Example: Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Educational Grants
  • 8. Eliminating the “Digital Divide” The "digital divide" is the expanding disparity between economic and racial populations in access to technology and the Internet Wealthy and middle-class have greater access to digital resources than their poorer counterparts Programs, such as Comcast’s Internet Essentials, offer low-income families Web access for low cost Libraries have program to provide Internet access for free Many grants offer Internet access devices, such as Google Chrome machine, at a low cost
  • 10. Increasing Diversity US Census data predicts by 2050, there will be no ethic group that is the majority In addition, to traditional ethnic population, other special populations, such as mental/physical challenged individuals, LGBT, will likely expand There will a doubling of Asian and Hispanic populations All these population will need to considered in community-based educational planning
  • 11. Population Trends: Aging The “Baby Boomer” generation is the largest in terms of size and percentage of the US population By 2030, the 65+ population will double to 71.5 million and by 2050 will grow to 86.7 million The trend is toward older Americans remaining in the work force longer than their predecessors Younger seniors are more techno-savvy and likely to seek regular retraining to meet professional and personal objectives They will likely seek both traditional educational vehicles , such as senior centers and brick & mortar educational institutions, but also distance learning alternatives
  • 12. Summary Community-based education will be heavily influenced by the following:  Proliferation of technology  Globalization  Changing population trends  Increasing diversity  Democratization of education Challenges will Include:  Finding funding and Resources  Reducing the “Digital Divide” Meeting these needs and challenges will require greater collaboration between pubic and private sectors
