Sues editing work
1. An introduction to editing
Editing is a process of selecting from different shots and joining them
together to tell a story.
What is elliptical editing for example the character is waking up this tells
us she has been asleep it allows you to move the story more quickly and
takes up less time on screen
Why are long shots used? To show you were someone is
Non – diagetic sound is a note of music playing under the sound of nature
the music isn’t actually playing the character cant hear it but the viewers
can.
How do we know she bending down to pick up her ring? The camera shows
you her ring first before she bends down.
What shots and why? And it’s a quicker way
Hustle
Overhead establishing shot – what does this achieve?
The camera begins cutting back and fourth between to characters that are
talking showing you they are in conversation with each other
Shot reverse shot is The director using shot reverse shot, it achieves eye
line matching the big man standing up and the seated man looks off screen
and up, you can see by their eyes they are looking at each other.
• Why do we cut to the other members of the group?
We cut to the other members of the group because shaun the main charther
lays out the plan, the editor could of of chosen to stay on the single shot of
him but the editor cut to different members of the gang, so we can see their
reactions about the plan and to each other
What is a wipe? A slick transition when you move the action to a
different location and time.
• What is the effect of using quick cuts? The effect of using quick
cuts is cutting to different locations.
2. The Invisible Art
How can editing build tension and pace?
Because it makes shots shorter, the shot changes change place
from different characters, and close up of them as well it builds
tension because by the end it makes the shot shorter and more
frequent also
• What is crosscutting?
When you cross back and fourth from the two characters
comparing their progress up the cliff for the viewers to see.
• What are reaction shots?
The anxious audience reaction shot
• What is seamless editing?
Is we don’t really notice the work of the editor
• What is a jump cut? - The man is hitting something big, then the
camera goes down to the smaller object on the floor so it looks
like he has broken it, this is known as a jump cut.
• what is a flash back and what does it achieve? – Flash back takes
the audience from one point in time to another; they are often used
to show back-stories, going back in a person life showing how
they got where they are now.
Playing with time.
At the start of the video theirs a long shot then, there is a close up of the
couple on the motor bike, then it flashes back to a clip were the girl is all
alone in a woods, and she’s having flash backs in her on the motor bike,
with her husband, it keeps going back and fourth to when she was with him
3. to now when she is by herself in the woods. There is a close up of the girl
looking at her weeding ring.
Then there is another close up of her throwing paper into the fire.
There’s a close up of her in the caravan and she lifts up the blanket and she
starts screaming. It then goes back to her by herself and the camera is close
up so you can only see her face, then a long shot of the sea, and as it gets to
the end she walks towards the sea and it fades out.
Aspects of being an editor and what other peoples the editor works with
and the skills needed.
The aspects of being an editor is to ensure that the story goes correct from
beginning to end, each of the shots done is carefully chosen and edited
properly, which then are created to finish the film.
Being an editor is a challenging and rewarding job. Editors work long hours
they are usually also under pressure in an editing suite or cutting room.
Some editors work on television drama and also featured films.
A Job of an editor is they work closely with the director before the shooting
starts, deciding the potential of the screenplay. Editors check all the
technical standards and make sure the story is correct and the actors
performances are good, editors must be able to maintain a good sense of
how the story is going to unfold they select the best takes and then put
them together to make scenes.
During the production of the filming the editor and director work together
to know when to edit the directors cut, which is approved by the producers.
Editor’s start of their careers by being runners to trainees and second
assistants & first assistants then they eventually become editors. Because
of all the changes in the film industry caused by digital editing techniques,
this career progression is less easy to follow but it is still possible to work
as a trainee and second assistants are only employed on big budget films.
The editors also must trust their assistants they may allow them to learn
and demonstrate and edit some sections of the film.
Editors must have a degree of technical aptitude and good experience of
the postproduction process. Because most films now are edited on
computers they must be able to use and understand the variety of different
computer equipment used to edit, they should also understand dramatic
storytelling and rhythm, and also they should have the ability to work
under pressure, excellent commutation skills good imagination of
understanding narrative, another skill ability to learn, patience good
organizational skills & they should know the requirements of the relevant
health and safety legislation and procedures.
4. The training and qualifications, there are no specific qualifications are
required for editors (film television and freelance training) because the
industry provides training for all job roles, including editing and provides
you with a short course training opportunities. Also short courses for
specializing in assistant editing for digital cutting rooms is a useful starting
point and there are courses available for this as well.
