This was a brief 10 minute presentation to members of the local Chamber of Commerce who had absolutely no idea where to begin with social media for their business. This was intended to give them some understanding, and the very basic steps of how to get started. For most people this is way too simplified, but for the audience it was built for, simple was necessary.

3. Introduction
What have you heard about
social media for business? Is
it the magic formula, or the
silver bullet? Not at all.
Social media is not magic, it
is hard work and it requires
an investment of time or
money, sometimes a mix of
both.

6. Goal Setting
When you have made the choice to use
social media properly for your business,
you need to set a goal.
What are you trying to accomplish? Do you
want more traffic to your website? More
leads, sales, buzz?
Select one or two goals and target your
efforts to specifically reach those goals.

7. Making a Routine
● Make sure you have signed up for all the
social networks you want to target
● The more social networks you use the
better
● If you only want to start with a few, focus
on the most popular networks like
● When setting up your networks always
include a photo and/or logo, links back to
your website, info about you or your
company

8. What to Monitor on Facebook
● WALL POSTS are where users can
post content to your wall. These could
be good or bad, feedback about an
experience, or even pictures
● COMMENTS are where you and your
fans can react to a wall post. It's a mini
conversation about the wall post
● LIKES are a virtual thumbs up, a sign
that people agree with or like the wall
post
● RECOMMENDATIONS are an
opportunity for users to recommend
your business to their friends.

about the difference of your product compared
to your competitors, you should be responding
● INDUSTRY QUESTIONS: Being helpful is a
great way to boost credibility with people who
don't know you or your business
● SUPPORT: If people are asking for your help
on Twitter, a quick response is great for long
term customer satisfaction
● COMPLAINTS: It is important to respond to
these in a timely manner
● PRAISE: When people say good things,
retweet it, thank them, enjoy it

10. What to Monitor on LinkedIn
● ANSWERS: Many users use this section to
post questions. It is a great opportunity for you
to showcase your expertise and build credibility
beyond your real life network. This is also a
good place to link to your website if you have a
relevant blog post on the subject.
● GROUP DISCUSSIONS: These are topic
focused discussions that offer you the
opportunity to answer, comment and link to
your resources when it adds value to the
community.

11. Streamline the Process
Wondering how the heck you are supposed
to monitor all those things? The good news
is, you don't need to go through the painful
process of logging into multiple websites
and monitoring each account separately .
There are many great social media
productivity tools that allow you to see a
dashboard overview of all your social
networks at a glance. This helps you
reduce the time you spend on social media
without compromising effectiveness.
One great tool that is free for up to 5 social
accounts is HootSuite.

13. Got More Time?
You are off to a great start now, but
that's just the tip of the iceberg. The
more time you can invest, the
greater the payoffs.
Consider blogging to create great
content to share on social media.
Consider analytics to measure your
results.
