In order to create applications that inspire the way the world travels, you must know what consumers are looking for in their search and shopping process. Right now, a traveler visits an average of 38 sites when planning their trip, because applications are not offering the appropriate interconnection between content, context and convenience. http://skift.com/2013/08/26/travelers-visit-38-sites-before-booking-a-vacation-study-says/ Consumers are looking for the most relevant and consumable content, presented with the right context, in a way that is convenient and easy for them to access. Each of these three distinct categories are interrelated to each other… More content = more complexity = which drives the need for more context = which drives higher expectations in convenience and accessibility = higher expectations on content
There is a three way collision between search, social and retail that is beginning to occur. It represents the future of the online consumer experience. More than likely there will not be one massive place where all of this content resides (face-azon-elocity), but the integration will be more subtle and consumer driven.
Supplier Content:Content is getting bigger: More content = more complexity = more choices for consumers Examples of how travel content has gotten bigger: Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class of Ships hold over 6,000 passengersAccording to STR Global, there are 187,000 hotels in the world with more than 17.5 million rooms. Assuming they are mainly doubles, they could house the entire population of Canada In 2010, Swiss boffins plotted the 93,000 flights that departed the world’s 9,000 airports in a day. 8.5 Million Guests have stayed in 33,000 + cities around the world using AirBnBHomeAway has 775,000 home listings in their marketplace And at the same time content is becoming smaller & more localized …Smaller and more localized content is making niche an irrelevant term. This has become a word created for businesses too lazy to understand what an individual actually wants and needs during their searching and shopping process. How small is small? Peer to Peer Marketplaces have become an integral part of the travel ecosystem, allowing each traveler to have interactions with locals both before and during their trips. Rent a house, a room or even surf on someone’s couch using services like AirBnB or Couchsurfing or solicit an expert local guide using a site such as Tours by Locals or Local Guiding. Or even rent someone’s personal car (Relay Rides). Content has also become “smaller” and more “localized” from geo-location based offers that provide on-demand relevant offers or services based on your exact location. Examples: Google Places, TripCase, Amazon. These offers meet the shopper where they are at a time when they are most likely to convert their search session in to a purchase. User Generated Content: 100 million reviews and opinions covering more than 2.7 million accommodations, restaurants, and attractions on TripAdvisor 4.5 Billion Check-Ins on Foursqaure 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute 71.3 Million Wordpress Blogs in the world 16 B Photos Shared on Instagram
It’s not just about repackaging, but reinventing the customer experience. Content can be creatively consumed whether it is digital or physical and consumers have many channels and choices when it comes to searching, shopping and consuming content. Good content must be presented to the consumer with the right context. Just because an application has excellent content, does not make it relevant to the user.
