Unplanned city growth is an indicator of rapid industrialization, which usually reduces the quality of the environmental health of a region - sometimes disastrously. Monitoring provides the planners and decision - makers with required information about the current state of development and the nature of changes that have occurred. The study on development of urban lands and the changes in the land use and land cover in Salem city, Tamil Nadu has been monitored by using IRS LISSII III(1991)and IRS-LISS III 2010) satellite data, the Town and Country Planning map(1994) and Survey of India Topo-sheets (1972) with limited field checks. This study highlights the changes in urban development. Mapping of the urban changes in the study area have been interpreted in view of developing urban land with different classes.

ABSTRACT: The urban framework studies are nowadays constituting important tools to support the decision-making process of municipal public administrations around the world. Through these studies, municipalities and competent bodies can guide the planning, execution and monitoring of the urban infrastructure of their cities, thus guaranteeing their populations efficient, high-quality sanitation, energy, transportation and housing equipment. In this sense, the present work carries out a study of the urban environment of the Córrego do Liso Hydrographic Basin, one of the most important urban subbasin of the municipality of Uberlândia – MG (Brazil) which suffers from conflicts arising from the use and occupation of its soil for domestic and industrial activities. For this study, geoprocessing and remote sensing techniques, as well as laboratory tests on soil and water samples, were used to collect georeferenced information about the main urban, environmental, geotechnical and hydrological parameters of the study area. With this data in hand, the technique of Multicriteria Analysis (or map algebra) was applied to correlate the data obtained and to formulate a sequence of documents, tables, infographics and mappings that synthesize the present urban reality of the studied basin.

The slide presentation for GIS: Bringing Geography to the World & the World to Geography, demonstrates the theme that GIS Day is a special occasion, whereby we express what we are thinking and doing in our GIS research, education, training, and applications activities. And, it is also is a time to set forth what we wish others would think about and do, such as providing answers to the question: “What contribution is Geography making to support and encourage the development and use of GIS technology and GIScience methods, techniques, and operations by governments, NGOs, business, researchers, academe, the media, and interest groups?” The impending Research Colloquium on Using the Retrospective Approach to Mine for GIS Nuggets is one such contribution by Geography to GIS. This GIS Day 2014 presentation includes a selection of figures and tables from several Colloquium papers which illustrate how Geography can contribute to both parts of the title, that is, GIS: Bringing Geography to the World and, GIS: Bringing the World to Geography.

Abstract: Public Participation GIS (PPGIS) defines a practice where GIS technology and methods are used in support of public participation and decision making in a number of domain applications (Sieber, 2000). PPGIS is viewed as a top-down process where a central authority identifies a problem, the stakeholders and the best way to address it (Ghose, 2007). Current advances in the GeoWeb are challenging the top-down purview of PPGIS in that more citizens are directly engaging with tools that enable the collection and communication of place-based knowledge by non-experts. This emerging process raises pertinent questions, including: How is knowledge of place expressed, and to what extent is it relevant to PPGIS? This talk will highlight local research that centered on Edmonton’s river valley trail network where 17 informants were interviewed regarding their knowledge of place, in addition to their collection and communication of place-based information. This research will address the crowdsourcing of such information through the GeoWeb as a means of replacing traditional, authority controlled, PPGIS processes. We will demonstrate that individuals possess a complex, detailed and nuanced understanding of place. And, finally, we will discuss the current limits and future trends of the GeoWeb’s ability to capture that depth of understanding.
