3. 2008-2009 Wake Forest Demon Deacons Basketball Preview Wake Forest Demon Deacons - ACC 2007-08: 13-14, 8-8, 8th (t) 2007-08 postseason: none Wake Forest really struggled early on in the season due to their youth. They started 4 Sophomores & 1 Freshman and took their lumps early. A mid-season lineup change added another freshman to the lineup, Jeff Teague. Jeff brought more speed and relieved some of the pressure on Ishmael Smith. The highlight of the year came when the Dec's defeated #2 Clemson in Littlejohn Coliseum. The Deacons finished the year with a .500 record in conference but were ousted in the 2nd round of the ACC Tourney by #2 seed Clemson.

5. Who’s Out: NO ONE The Deacons return all 10 players from last year. Who’s In: Wake Forest enjoyed the best recruiting class of any team in the ACC. They brought in the nation's #1 SF in Al-Farouq Aminu and a pair of 5* Centers in Ty Walker & Tony Woods. Al-Farouq has already been declared a starter from Day 1. He has the unique blend of athleticism and skills to make Wake a dangerous team. Ty Walker will most likely redshirt due to the fact that he is only 215lbs. Tony Woods will provide the Deacons with a shot-blocker down low and a young mobile body that can get up and down the court. There is a lot to be excited for this year. 6. Who to Watch: James Johnson won last year's ACC Freshman of the Year and surprisingly no one is talking about him. He led Wake in pts & rebs and started every game as a true freshman, something the great Tim Duncan didn't even accomplish. With more talent around him his #'s might dip (14pts 6rebs) but he should be every bit as successful. After being inserted in the starting line-up Jeff Teague the Deac's were 6-3 and Teague averaged 14.1 pts per game. His pts might dip but his assists should go up as he is Wake's best guard off the bounce. Yes, he's a freshman but Aminu has the town in a buzz. He might be Wake's biggest recruit since Rodney Rogers. Life in the ACC is always tough for freshman but this kid should be able to really give the Deacons that 3rd scoring option. 7. ACC Predictions 1-North Carolina Lost Hansbrough & Lawson but reloaded with Ed Davis, Tyler Zeller & Larry Drew. 2-Duke Lost Demarcus Nelson but could be 8-10 deep for once. It still boils down to whether or not Singler,Zoubek,Thomas & King can become men down low. 3-NC State Gavin Grant gone is gone but everyone else is back. Should be another NCAA torney bid for the wolfpack. 4-Wake Forest Youngest team in the ACC got even younger. Kids from last year really grew up towards the end. They could go back to the NCAAs for the first time since CP3 was there. 5-Clemson (Defending NATL Champs too!!!) Defending Nat'l Champs lose Hammonds, Mays, & Sam Perry but Rivers & Booker are still there as well as Potter,Oglesby, & Stitt. 6-Maryland Terps lose both bigs in Osby & Gist. If they can find production down low they could be a sleeper pick to make the field of 64. 7-Miami Surprise ACC Regular season champs last year lose their big (Anthony King) but should be in the contention for another ACC run. 8-FSU Noles lose 3 out of their 4 guards (Swann, Mims, Rich) but bring in 5 recruits who should all get PT. Rebuilding year for Coach Hamilton. 9-Virginia 3 time All-ACC performer Sean Singletary is gone. Sylvan Landensberg should help with the scoring but who will handle the ball? 10-Va Tech Deron Washington is gone but he missed all of last year with injuries. Vassalo & Jeff Allen should provide the Hokies with a 1/2 punch but it wont be enough. 11-Georgia Tech Anthony Morrow, Matt Causey, and Jeremis Smith all depart. Time for Lawal & Peacock to step up. Iman Shumpert is a flat out stud who will continue the long line of stellar GT PG play. 12-Boston College Shot Blocker Tony Blair is gone as is garbage man John Oates. Rakim Sanders will have to step up. There is also this kid named Tyrese Rice. I heard he's pretty good.
