SOCIAL BUSINESS AUDIT: RESTAURANT BRANDS 
WHO’S WINNING SOCIAL IN THE 
RESTAURANT INDUSTRY? 
The Social Business Audit is a monthly industry report that crunches the numbers on who’s winning in social. 
To analyze this month’s vertical, we harvested data from Sprinklr’s Social Business Index and ranked performance 
across multiple metrics. Past Social Business Audits have included the automobile, consumer electronics, 
and retail industries, and findings are summarized quarterly in our Social@Scale Journal. 
Nearly 9 out of 10 restaurants are using social to create communities across multiple platforms. In doing so, 
restaurants are differentiating their brands and connecting with their fans in a highly competitive, almost $700 
billion industry. So we crunched the numbers to show you who’s succeeding and who has room for improve 
strategic improvement. 
METHODOLOGY 
All data was observed from August 30, 2014, to 
September 30, 2014, using Sprinklr’s Social Business 
Index software. All metrics capture activity over that 
30-day period. 
Each restaurant received a score based upon their 
performance across each of the seven metrics. More 
points were awarded for those who succeeded in 
weightier metrics such as engagement and earned 
impressions and less points were awarded for more 
basic level metrics such as brand posts and followers. 
METRICS 
Engagement: 
A weighted composite of the total number of 
engagements (likes, comments, favorites, retweets) 
that followers have with a piece of branded content. 
Earned impressions: 
The total number of impressions as a result of 
organic sharing of branded content. 
Impressions: 
An estimate of the number of views branded 
content receives, taking into account the number of 
followers and the decay rate of each social platform. 
Active participants: 
The number of followers that are actively engaged 
with branded content by taking weighty actions such 
as commenting, sharing, or retweeting it. 
Active audience: 
The number of followers that are somewhat 
engaged with branded content by taking smaller 
actions such as liking or favoriting it. 
Brand posts: 
Posts from a brand’s official accounts over 30 days. 
Engagement ratio: 
Active audience divided by followers. An assessment 
of engagement when controlling for audience size.
