Chancellorsville
• “Fighting Joe” Hooker attacked with twice the
number of men
Fighting Joe Hooker
• Lee divided his troops into three
• Confederates Won!
• Stonewall Jackson was fatally wounded
– He was shot by a Confederate soldier by mistake
Chancellorsville resulted in 3 things:
1. Kept the capitol of the South safe
2. Raised the morale of the South and lowered
that of the North
3. The longer the South stayed in the war, the
more likely the Europeans would recognize
the Confederacy and aid them
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
• Lee’s army was marching through Maryland
• As they near Gettysburg, a party head out to
look for shoes for the Confederate soldiers
• Met up with the Union army
• Union was entrenched on higher ground
Pickett’s Charge
• Confederate attack by General George Pickett
• Hoped to dislodge the Union troops
– Formed a line nearly one-mile long
– Surrounded on three sides and was overwhelmed
• The south would never have the strength to
launch a major offensive again
Gettysburg Address
• 17 acres set aside to bury the men who had
fallen there
• Lincoln was not the main speaker
• Only 10 sentences
• Just over two minutes
Gettysburg Address
Vicksburg, Mississippi
• Whoever
controlled
Vicksburg,
controlled the
Mississippi
River
• This was the turning point in the war
• After a few tries, he marched his army to
Mississippi banks below Vicksburg
• Floated his men down the river under the
cover of night
•
•
•
•

Union attacked 6 times
They had to abandon its supply lines
This was part of the Anaconda Plan
It worked! The Union starved the city into
submission

  1. Hooker boasted “May God have mercy on General lee, for I will have none!”
  2. Vicksburg sat on high bluffs overlooking the river…The Union army attacked the town six times…each time the Confederates repelled them…
  3. Ordered his troops to carry what rations of hard bread, coffee, and sort we can, and make the country furnish the balance.Confederates moved to cut off their supply lines only to find out that Grant had noneBesieged the town for six weeks…the Union forces shelled Vicksburg around the clockFood became so scarce that people ate mules, rats and even family petsConfederate troops had to surrender!
