• The General Amnesty Act gave most
Southerners the right to vote again
• Southerners wanted to “redeem the south”
from black rule
3. Election of 1876
• Republicans nominated Rutherford B. Hayes
• Democrats nominated Samuel J. Tilden
7. Who Won?
• At first looked like Tilden won
• He had 184 of the 185 electoral votes needed
• South Carolina, Louisiana and Florida sent in
conflicting reports. (They were still federally
occupied)
8. • Congress set up a commission of 15 men to
see who would get the votes
• In a vote of 7 to 8 all votes went to the
Republicans
• Hayes Won!
9. Compromise of 1877
• Democrats hinted at another civil war
• Democrats would allow the votes to be
counted
• The remainder of the federal troops would be
removed from the south
