Digital Textbooks by Crystal King
In today’s world technology is advancing quickly. Students today are more technology based than they used to be. They are using the technology for their personal use to connect with friends, find information when needed, and for school work. Being able to have students view textbooks online will allow them to have the information at their fingertips.
Since students are becoming more and more familiar with technology, having digital textbooks lets students browse and find information more easily. Also this information is more portable for students since they can just log onto a website, have a cd, or access on a school computer. Having students stare at a computer to read the information for so long will eventually strain their eyes.
Digital Textbooks are books that can be viewed online. Some schools are slowly converting to digital textbooks. This means that instead of having actual textbooks for the students, the school will provide computers that the students can use to view textbooks. Also these textbooks can be interactive with the students. For example students can do activities relating to the lesson they have just learned or are in the process of learning, such as a math problem.
Having digital textbooks would save the districts money. Also some rare books to come by will be more widely available.
Not all students are lucky enough to be able to have a computer in their household. If the power goes out and the battery life on portable computers die, students have no way of accessing the information.
Currently digital textbooks are not that popular, but with the increase of technology being used they are slowly being added to schools. Teachers and students alike are learning to use technology more and more inside and outside of the classroom.
In the future schools will most likely have made the transition to use digital textbooks and completely get rid of traditional textbooks. Having digital textbooks for students could improve studies due to the information being portable. For the younger students that are elementary age, their digital textbooks would be more learning friendly. The books would include interactive games that they would learn during, interesting lessons they would be excited to learn from, and much more.
More textbook company’s are adding digital supplements when printing the traditional textbook. Teacher and administration are starting to recognize that students are learning more through interactive methods. These interactive methods include digital textbooks that have fun interactive components, which go along with the lessons.
Having all classrooms use digital textbooks allows teachers and students to enhance the learning environment because students will be willing to pay attention more since there is technology involved. Being able to access digital textbooks on any computer make it easier for students that do not have the technology in their homes to still be able to access the information from other locations, such as schools and libraries.
Overall digital textbooks can be beneficial to education. Students will be more willing and involved in learning when using technology. The implementation of digital textbooks will have a positive impact or effect in the learning community.
