‘‘Crime Thriller’’
• Summit Entertainment is an American film studio
and a subsidiary of Lions Gate Entertainment.
• When using http://www.the-numbers.com/ it tells us
that Summit Entertainment is ranked 13th in the
world distributors and on thriller films alone, it is
  number one.
Opening of the film
Opening Layout of the film
• Spencer and Lily return from their camping
  trip
• We see Joseph watching Lily and Spencer
  return from his house
• Spencer sends Lily to Joseph's house to return
  something
• Lily gets abducted
Characters- Victim
                          Lily Fox

The victim of this film is a 10 year old girl. Using the
spheres of action, she is the princess. She is also the
focus point of this film as if there was no girl then
   there would be no story.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tDBUHj7JWg (1)
I believe that Mackenzie Foy would fit in with this role
perfectly and it would give the character more of a
    dominant part in the film.

                                                      The bright colours to
                                                      symbolise that she is
                                                      a main character and
The teddy bear to contrast from the
      to connote to surroundings.

     her innocence

Characters- Hero
                              Spencer Fox

The hero of this film will be the father of the victim that was
kidnapped, and I have chosen Patrick Wilson to play him. I
believe that Patrick Wilson would be perfect for this as I feel
that the father in this film should seem innocent and just a
typical dad, but then seems to have all the great physical and
mental attributes that make him a great hero and detective.

I also wanted the actor I chose to be able to show emotional pain
and fear as that is what I believe you would feel if your child
was abducted. He does this in Hard Candy. Even though he
plays a pedophile in the film the tides turn and he becomes
the victim and shows real fear towards his life and emotional
pain and fear through people realizing who he actually is. All
we got to do is change the reason why he is experiencing pain
and fear to an abducted daughter and there you go!
                                                                     Hard Candy trailer
                                  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2U_xFaKhLsI (3)
Sterotypical Dad Impressions (Dan from Watchmen)
                                  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avBtin729NU (4)
Costume for Spencer Fox

- White/Light grey shirt (untucked)
- Blue Jeans
- Sleeves rolled up (preferally)
- Relaxed feel of the costume
- Possibly Converse or trainers
- Reading glasses

I chose to keep him as casual as possible so there is a
difference between him and his friend. He is more of
the playful side of things and always has time for
family, etc. and his friend is more serious and
controlled. The use of reading glasses too give you the
feel that he is a bit nerdy or innocent and you would
expect him to be someone to indulge himself into a
                     situation like that.
Characters- Villain
                            Joseph Hawke
If you have seen any of the new Batman films, then you would
have seen the Scarecrow character also known as Dr. Crane
played by Cillian Murphy. This character is very relaxed and
calm but inside you know he is screaming and definitely
messed up in the head. This is exactly how I wanted the
villain in this to seem like because in the storyline he is the
‘helper’ (spheres of action) to the hero. By making the
character like this it gives off the use of subversion which is
where you destroy loyalty – so In this case the best friends
     loyalty to the hero.

This short scene from batman begins, is exactly how I want the
villain to seem behind closed doors.

Costume for Joseph Hawke

When normal When kidnapping
- White shirt (with the - Full suit (formal
sleeves rolled up) trousers, blazer and
- Formal trousers and shoes)
  shoes - Red tie
                                          - Black gloves
- Red tie
                                          - Ski Mask

I have chosen the costumes to be similar to
drop a hint to the audience that he may be
the kidnapper but later on in the film there
will be many twists that lead to other
suspects. Also the use of the ski mask and
gloves basically hides any trace of identity to
                            who the kidnapper might be.
Other characters
                - that you don’t see -
- Detective – Marshall Peters (played by Gary Oldman)
Is the main detective and ‘helper’ to Spencer.

- Joseph’s Wife – Jacqueline Hawke (played by MillaJovovich)
Becomes depressed and doesn’t play a large part.

- Lily’s Uncle – Matias Rivera (On her mothers side) [played by Javier
  Bardem]
Becomes a suspect in the film.

- Mystery Bad Guy (Josephs helper) – George Wu [played by Ken
    Watanbe]
Is the man that Joseph sends Lily to.
Setting’s and Mis en scene
We will be using three different locations for our opening to film.
 1. The first location will be shot in a quiet side road called Cupid Green Lane.

Characters: The only character we will be using in this
shot is the stereotypical young girl Lily (the victim)
who will be walking on her own. She will be wearing
colourful clothing to connote to the audience the
bright and happy character she is. The shot will also
have her holding a teddy bear to symbolise her
                                            innocence and her fragile role.
Lighting: The lighting in this shot will be very dark.
This will prevent the audience from seeing much
around her, or the character themselves and create
                                            unease and mystery.

This is a link to the surroundings:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgcK2xPh9jo&feature=channel&list=UL (6)
2. Our second location will be on St. Agnells Road. This is a main road and cars
will appear in the shot also. This is where the first actions begins to take
      place.

Characters: The shot will again focus on the
young girl walking. She will be walking
towards the camera. She will still be holding
her teddy bear to capture her innocence.
Lighting: The lighting will be high contrast
lighting in this shot. The darkness will contrast
with the headlights from cars and streetlamps
allowing the audience to see the young girl
more clearly and see what she is holding.

Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgcK2xPh9jo&feature=channel&list=UL (7)
3. Our third location for filming the opening will be in a dining room:

Characters: The characters in this shot will
be the father in distress. He will check the
time on his watch(props) to show the
                                               audience his eagerness.
Lighting: The lighting will be high contrast to
allow the audience to see the characters
                                               facial expressions and body movements
throughout the shot. However the backdrop
                                               will be rather dark.
Colour: Significant colours in this shot will be
red to highlight to the audience the high
                                               emotions density within the shot.

                                                                            Taken Opening
The Opening itself
A brief summary –
http://www.voki.com/pickup.php?scid=6910326&height=267&width=200

     Our opening consists of an
abduction of a young girl. The In our opening we have applied the ‘Binary
young girl walks to her fathers Opposition’ theory (by Levi Strauss). The
friends house to drop something oppositions relevant in our film is ‘Good vs
off, but during her journey she gets Evil’ which is the most common binary
kidnapped. opposition applied to crime thriller movies.
The child’s father will be the hero within the
film and the kidnapper being the villain. For
instance the following crime thriller have
                                       implemented the binary opposition theory:
The Opening itself
        (cont.)
Another narrative theory that we have
implemented into our film opening is Vladimir
Prop's ‘Sphere of Actions’. For example:

           • Lily Fox (victim) - The princess
          • Spencer Fox (father)- The hero
      • Joseph Hawke (kidnapper)- The Villain

The three characters in our film opening are
represented to suit these roles and this is
shown within the opening of the film. For
example, in the film Spiderman the use of
spheres of action is demonstrated in the trailer
                        alone.

Costume for Lily Fox The bright colours to symbolise that she is a main character and The teddy bear to contrast from the to connote to surroundings. the audience her innocence Alone with nobody else around This is a link to the surroundings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgcK2xPh9jo&feature=channel&list=UL (2)
  • 10. Characters- Hero Spencer Fox The hero of this film will be the father of the victim that was kidnapped, and I have chosen Patrick Wilson to play him. I believe that Patrick Wilson would be perfect for this as I feel that the father in this film should seem innocent and just a typical dad, but then seems to have all the great physical and mental attributes that make him a great hero and detective. I also wanted the actor I chose to be able to show emotional pain and fear as that is what I believe you would feel if your child was abducted. He does this in Hard Candy. Even though he plays a pedophile in the film the tides turn and he becomes the victim and shows real fear towards his life and emotional pain and fear through people realizing who he actually is. All we got to do is change the reason why he is experiencing pain and fear to an abducted daughter and there you go! • 11. Costume for Spencer Fox - White/Light grey shirt (untucked) - Blue Jeans - Sleeves rolled up (preferally) - Relaxed feel of the costume - Possibly Converse or trainers - Reading glasses I chose to keep him as casual as possible so there is a difference between him and his friend. He is more of the playful side of things and always has time for family, etc. and his friend is more serious and controlled. The use of reading glasses too give you the feel that he is a bit nerdy or innocent and you would expect him to be someone to indulge himself into a situation like that.
  • 12. Characters- Villain Joseph Hawke If you have seen any of the new Batman films, then you would have seen the Scarecrow character also known as Dr. Crane played by Cillian Murphy. This character is very relaxed and calm but inside you know he is screaming and definitely messed up in the head. This is exactly how I wanted the villain in this to seem like because in the storyline he is the ‘helper’ (spheres of action) to the hero. By making the character like this it gives off the use of subversion which is where you destroy loyalty – so In this case the best friends loyalty to the hero. This short scene from batman begins, is exactly how I want the villain to seem behind closed doors. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AO1gYEPIghE&feature=relm fu (5)
  • 13. Costume for Joseph Hawke When normal When kidnapping - White shirt (with the - Full suit (formal sleeves rolled up) trousers, blazer and - Formal trousers and shoes) shoes - Red tie - Black gloves - Red tie - Ski Mask I have chosen the costumes to be similar to drop a hint to the audience that he may be the kidnapper but later on in the film there will be many twists that lead to other suspects. Also the use of the ski mask and gloves basically hides any trace of identity to who the kidnapper might be.
  • 14. Other characters - that you don’t see - - Detective – Marshall Peters (played by Gary Oldman) Is the main detective and ‘helper’ to Spencer. - Joseph’s Wife – Jacqueline Hawke (played by MillaJovovich) Becomes depressed and doesn’t play a large part. - Lily’s Uncle – Matias Rivera (On her mothers side) [played by Javier Bardem] Becomes a suspect in the film. - Mystery Bad Guy (Josephs helper) – George Wu [played by Ken Watanbe] Is the man that Joseph sends Lily to.
  • 15. Setting’s and Mis en scene We will be using three different locations for our opening to film. 1. The first location will be shot in a quiet side road called Cupid Green Lane. Characters: The only character we will be using in this shot is the stereotypical young girl Lily (the victim) who will be walking on her own. She will be wearing colourful clothing to connote to the audience the bright and happy character she is. The shot will also have her holding a teddy bear to symbolise her innocence and her fragile role. Lighting: The lighting in this shot will be very dark. This will prevent the audience from seeing much around her, or the character themselves and create unease and mystery. This is a link to the surroundings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgcK2xPh9jo&feature=channel&list=UL (6)
  • 16. 2. Our second location will be on St. Agnells Road. This is a main road and cars will appear in the shot also. This is where the first actions begins to take place. Characters: The shot will again focus on the young girl walking. She will be walking towards the camera. She will still be holding her teddy bear to capture her innocence. Lighting: The lighting will be high contrast lighting in this shot. The darkness will contrast with the headlights from cars and streetlamps allowing the audience to see the young girl more clearly and see what she is holding. • 17. 3. Our third location for filming the opening will be in a dining room: Characters: The characters in this shot will be the father in distress. He will check the time on his watch(props) to show the audience his eagerness. Lighting: The lighting will be high contrast to allow the audience to see the characters facial expressions and body movements throughout the shot. However the backdrop will be rather dark. Colour: Significant colours in this shot will be red to highlight to the audience the high emotions density within the shot. Taken Opening
  • 18. The Opening itself A brief summary – http://www.voki.com/pickup.php?scid=6910326&height=267&width=200 Our opening consists of an abduction of a young girl. The In our opening we have applied the ‘Binary young girl walks to her fathers Opposition’ theory (by Levi Strauss). The friends house to drop something oppositions relevant in our film is ‘Good vs off, but during her journey she gets Evil’ which is the most common binary kidnapped. opposition applied to crime thriller movies. The child’s father will be the hero within the film and the kidnapper being the villain. For instance the following crime thriller have implemented the binary opposition theory:
  • 19. The Opening itself (cont.) Another narrative theory that we have implemented into our film opening is Vladimir Prop's ‘Sphere of Actions’. For example: • Lily Fox (victim) - The princess • Spencer Fox (father)- The hero • Joseph Hawke (kidnapper)- The Villain The three characters in our film opening are represented to suit these roles and this is shown within the opening of the film. For example, in the film Spiderman the use of spheres of action is demonstrated in the trailer alone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FN3YaybNJ2s(8)
