whoami

Hi, I’m Kostas

I <3 Open-Source and IT stuff based on
Linux enterprise (or not) environments

I’m an undergraduate university student
at Digital Systems Dept
General
Linux servers’ general advantages:
●
Run on a command (no GUI's weighing down
performance)
●
Customize the kernel tailed for your needs
●
Cost
●
Downtimes (ex: defrag downtime) => reboots
●
And so mush other disadvantages of Windows servers that i am bored to write down now :D
Linux Servers
Linux
●
Strong presence in the web and DNS
space (free of cost & strong)
●
For the first two decades of the Internet
Microsoft products offered neither of
these advantages.
●
With Web servers the choice is usually
LAMP and that runs on Linux.
Ubuntu servers- Pros
●
Ubuntu server has helped lots of cool IT
companies in the world at scale
(ex:Rackspace)
●
Understandable question : Why Ubuntu?
Ubuntu servers– OpenStack
●
Ubuntu and OpenStack (IaaS cloud
computing project) are ready for production.
OpenStack is:
Ø
Opensource (free and community support)
Ø
Python written (easy to use lang)
Ø
Extensible (make what you need!)
Ø
Ideal for private cloud services
Ubuntu server - Ceph
Ceph: unified storage platform
●
Ceph's main goals
q
completely distributed without a single point of
failure
q
scalable to the exabyte leve
q
and freely-available.
Result: data is seamlessly replicated, making it
fault tolerant.
Ubuntu server - MaaS
MaaS: Metal as a Service , powered by
Canonical,the Ubuntu people.
●
Deliver on-demand services like cloud does
on VMs but now on servers.
●
Contain all services: DHCP,DNS,PXE,blah
blah blah!
●
Ability to extend servers to clusters!
Ø
Metal Power + VM Speed = AWESOME!
Ubuntu servers- Juju
Juju: Ubuntu app that enables you to build entire
environments in the cloud with only a few
commands 

Central machines management

A few clicks magic!
Ø
Install apps & frameworks in minutes!
Ubuntu servers- Landscape
●
Landscape central overview:
Ø
Manage thousands of Ubuntu servers
Ø
Fix a security issue affecting all machines
Ø
A whole IT dept on your hands
Ubuntu servers- Support
●
Appart from Canonical support
v
Ask Ubuntu website
v
The same issue you face probably has been
already resolved by someone else. Just ask

Ubuntu servers– Askubuntu
Community
Ubuntu servers- conclusion
●

Ø
Stable
Ø
