Editor's Notes

  1. Hello & welcome to an overview of vSphere and the Journey to Cloud Computing. My name is Kris Walsh. I’m am the SMB Territory manager for Michigan & I will be conducting this Overview today. INFO ON PRESENTATION: There are notes on most slides… If you have two monitors, have the PPT application on your secondary monitor.“Presentation Mode” will show on your primary monitorPush the ‘Down Arrow’ on your keyboard to advance the slidesThe PPT application should move with the presentation, revealing the notes for that slide.
  2. *In round 3, VMware introduced Virtual Infrastructure or VI3. So, by attaching network storage to your ESX host and building clusters you’re able to do what we call * “dynamic computing” or “vMotion”. VMotion allows you to make a “stateful move” or live migration of a virtual machine from one physical host to another. You can use vMotion for maintenance or manual load balancing. Keep in mind that users won’t see any downtime which allows maintenance to be done during peak hours. This is one of the most popular features and is currently used in over 70% of our customer’s production environments. *VI3 also offered greater application availability through our HA product. In the event of an unexpected host failure, High Availability will restart those virtual machines on an available host in that HA cluster. *click*Our vCenter Management Server gives you the ability to do *click* quick imaging and provisioning using templates. So, now spinning up a new application can be done in minutes instead of weeks. There’s also *click* centralized resource management using vCenter. Each virtual machine may have different resource requirements. Those can be managed and configured easily through vCenter. vCenter is the ‘Window” for viewing the performance of your VMware Infrastructure. It is also the console where you set up HA clusters, manage vMotion, VM cloning, monitoring etc…
  3. **READ THIS BEFORE CLICKING**VMware has created a revolution in IT. Now that we’ve created this market, everyone else has decided they want in. *click*Microsoft has tied their hypervisor to their very large, general purpose operating system. This creates many issues. *click*The drivers in Hyper-V are hosted in the General Purpose OS. This creates a bottleneck in performance. “Have you ever had a driver problem with Windows?” Most people have… Microsoft doesn’t write or certify drivers, therefore, they don’t support the issues that stem from them. *click*VMware has a different philosophy on drivers. With VMware, drivers are written for the hypervisor AND the underlying hardware. We then rigorously test and certify the hardware. These are two completely different philosophies. One is from an innovator and leader in the virtualization market and the other from an OS company who wants control of the hardware. *click*The dependence on Windows creates an issue when patching, too. When patch Tuesday comes, all the VM’s must be migrated off that server. You can only do one live migration at a time & they are very slow. *click*The vSphere Hypervisor doesn’t have to be patched nearly as often. We include Update Manager to assist with patching your hosts & individual VMs. When it comes time to update ESXi, VMware can do 8 vMotions PER HOST making the patching process much more efficient. *click*Microsoft’s approach also creates a security risk. The size of their OS (3.6GB minimum) creates a large surface area for potential attacks. *click*ESXi reduces the potential for security attacks thanks to a smaller code base. (~70MB) *click*VM’s per Host – VMware can typically get 3 to 10times the number of virtual machines per Host. Higher VM density with VMware provides a lower Total Cost of Ownership. *click*Gartner Group’s Tom Bittman describes the Hyper-V parent partition as “ONE BIG FAT SINGLE POINT OF FAILURE”Microsoft takes a “Good Enough” approach that over promises and under delivers. CLICK FOR THE NEXT SLIDE OR READ THE ADDITIONAL NOTES BELOW:Microsoft is trying to mimic the components of VMware vSphere. They just started doing Live Migrations. We’ve been doing Live Migrations with vMotion for many years. I’ve talked to several customers about the differences in setting up High Availability in Hyper-V VS VMware. Pull out the manual for creating an HA Cluster with MSFT. You have to install the OS – Set up cluster services THEN install Hyper-V. With VMware, HA setup is a couple of clicks. Every single customer that tested VMware HA 1st… gave up ½ way through the Microsoft HA installation process. The drawbacks we’ve discussed here are the reasons VMware chose to go with a TRUE hypervisor solution back in 2002.
  4. But don’t take VMware’s word for it! *click*According to Gartner “VMware stands alone as a leader in this Magic Quadrant.” *click*What is the “Magic Quadrant?” It speaks to a company’s *click* Ability to execute and *click* the Completeness of their vision. *click*As you can see, VMware is the clear market leader, with high customer satisfaction, as well as a clear vision for a true cloud computing solution for the future… *click*Now just read through the items as they pop up on the screen.
  5. We just scratched the surface of virtualization with VI3 and features like vMotion. What we’ve found is Now with the Virtual Datacenter OS we’ve added much more including * Dynamic compute resources, * Dynamic network ing resources, * dynamic disk resources *Fault Tolerance, *Data Recovery, * Advanced Power Management features and of course * Security. As you can see, we’re no longer dependent on the underlying hardware. The ultimate goal is you can lose any piece of the underlying infrastructure and your application will still be delivered. This is what we here at VMware call ‘The Internal Cloud.’ This is exactly what we deliver with VSphere.
  6. *Let’s dive into some of the components of Cloud computing. We talked about this before with *VMotion.Vmotion is the stateful move of virtual machines from host to host, with no downtime. We also have *DRS or Distributed Resource Scheduler. This is the auto load balancing of your virtual machines. When workload demands change, the virtual machine will be moved to the host that best accommodates the compute resources needed. *There’s also, intelligent placement of new virtual machines. So, DRS will place that new virtual machine into the resource pool that offers the best compute resources for it’s workload demands. *Next is Storage VMotion. With the same user interface, you can dynamically move your virtual machine’s storage requirements from one LUN to another. For example: If you create a 2 TB LUN for your virtual machines and require more space, you can simply click and drag your volume from one LUN to another
  7. *So, previously, I mentioned Advanced Power Management. With similar technology as DRS, we now have* DPM or (Distributed Power Manager). As workloads decrease throughout the day, DPM will automatically move vm’s off unneeded hardware and power it down. This can obviously help you keep power and cooling costs down as well as gain control of some of your green initiatives. *Then, of course, as the workload demands increase those underlying hardware resources are powered on again and virtual machines are redistributed using DRS.
  8. *Going along with the cloud computing concept we have to take a look at where we were previously with virtual switches. *With previous releases, virtual switches were isolated to the physical hosts. This created repetitious & cumbersome challenges around networking as multiple switches had to be configured and maintained by administrators. Once again the requirement should be that a VMs networking properties should be assigned and travel with that VM wherever it goes throughout the virtual datacenter. With vSphere’s * distributed switch, we offer the ability to make a switch that spans multiple physical hosts. We also have the ability to * add Cisco manageability at the virtual switch level. The Cisco Nexus 1000v is a virtual appliance that gives networking control back to your Cisco Admin.
  9. *From a Fault Tolerance perspective, * High Availability, which we talked about earlier, is still available for lower tier apps. HA can still restart virtual machines on remaining hosts in your HA cluster. But now, vSphere has an advanced fault tolerant property. In a nutshell, Fault Tolerance is “NO Downtime” HA solution. You simply * identify the virtual machine that you want to create a fault tolerance instance of. Fault Tolerance then creates a shadow copy virtual machine that runs in “Lockstep”. * In the event that there’s UNPLANNED downtime, the shadow virtual machine that’s running will simultaneously take over where the main virtual machine left off with no downtime to the end user. Also, during this process another shadow virtual machine will be created on another available ESX host.
  10. You can easily see from this list that VMware is continuing to enhance our products. The “Highlights” of our 4.1 release are further enhancements to our vMotion technology, Memory Compression, Storage I/O Control & Network I/O Control. We’ve improved the speed & scale of vMotion. We can to up to 8 simultaneous vMotions per Host! Our Memory Compression technology increases application performance by up to 30%.With Storage I/O Control you can set QoS priorities for an individual VM’s access to storage. And with Network I/O Control, you can set QoS priorities for an individual VM’s access to network resources. Please go to VMware.com to learn more about enhancements we’ve made to our “Dot One” release of vSphere.
  11. VMware is the fastest growing software company that continues to grow and lead the market based on a compelling value proposition to a broad set of IT customers, from small to large global enterprises. The pioneer in x86 virtualization, VMware continues to redefine the scope of virtualization for the new era of Cloud Computing.
  12. RTO = Recovery Time ObjectiveIn one example a Chemical company in Mississippi with over 400 Virtual Machines was able to completely recover their datacenter in under 20 minutes!
  13. This example is a fairly typical SMB customer. You can see their corporate goals here… We’ve been talking about all the features and functionality. Let’s take a look at what a REAL WORLD example looks like.
  14. Using VMware vSphere, this customer was able to consolidate down to FIVE servers at each site! By utilizing our Enterprise Plus solution with SRM they were able to meet ALL of their corporate initiatives. Reduce Costs: They are seeing huge power savings through consolidation.Bring new Apps online quickly: By utilizing a consistent platform across their development cycle, this customer is able to bring their Apps to market 80% faster!Centralized Storage:Availability: With VMware HA, FT & SRM, they’re able to meet the Service Level Agreements(SLA’s) required by their Board of Directors.DR: VMware made their DR dreams a reality. We’re only talking about 10 Servers! All the features & functionality we’ve discussed is available at BOTH SITES!In order to replicate the capabilities of this VMware environment in the physical world, you’d need 96 servers at the primary site & 48 at the DR! (One Server per VM – Fault Tolerance/HA/DR) You still wouldn’t have the flexibility and freedom VMware provides.
  15. *So, in summary, vSphere is a significant advancement in virtualization in which the *cloud OS manages the complexities of the datacenter. As a result, *processing, storage, and networking all function as a seamless, flexible, and dynamic computing environment.
  16. Why is there such a push for Cloud Computing? VMware customers are seeing irrefutable savings by adopting vSphere. It provides Increased Utilization through resource pooling & management efficiencies that can drive costs to as low as 9 cents per hour on a VM. However, even greater savings can be realized with Increased Automation (Another way of saying Cloud Computing). Using Self-Service Portals that are Policy Driven you can create a Zero Touch Infrastructure that further drive costs down to as low as 3 cents per hour on a VM.Only VMware has the Products and tools to enable “Your Cloud”.
  17. This slide articulates how VMware’s solutions are designed to get our customers to true cloud computing. The toughest point to break through for many of our customers is virtualizing Tier 1 Applications. Many customers want to talk about Disaster Recovery with SRM, but we’ve found that only customers who are committed to virtualizing their Tier 1 apps are able to gain the buy in necessary for adoption.Similarly, many customers ask about our Virtual Desktop solution View 4. Again, Unless they are committed to virtualizing their Tier 1 apps, there is typically not enough organizational “buy in” to support an implementation. Once fully committed, VMware has the Management and Automation products to allow an organization to ‘Standardize on Virtualization’ & create their Internal Cloud.Other Terms: Virtualize 1st Policy
  18. A lot of dialog on cloud, and many vendors purport a self-serving definition. <click> There are public cloud infrastructure services, as represented by some of these companies.<click>There are public cloud platform services for the development of rich, cloud enabled applications, as represented by some of these companies including our partnerships with Salesforce and Google.<click>There are also SaaS offerings, which have suddenly become “cloud”.And of course there is a growing number of private clouds, that are being constructed and operated within the datacenters of businesses, because after all…<click>Cloud is not a destination, it’s an approach. In fact, our belief is that the new era in IT will combine all of these into a secure, cohesive whole which will enable IT as a Service. That, is how VMware defines and is executing on its cloud computing strategy.<add this click>Not just any cloud, but “Your Cloud”. The only cloud that really matters.
