Role of Game Programmers for Serious
Games in Academia: Colleague,
Collaborator AND Client–Kris Stewart/SDSU

  Education Interwork Institute, College of Education;
Discipline Silos at the University
Typical Situation (faculty) Our Unique Team
• Colleague • Content Specialist
                                      material science
  by assumption
• Collaborator • Design & Big Picture
                                      school of art design
when there is a need (can it
  be mutual?) • Implementation
• Client 3d Maya assets from art
                                      provided to XNA game
  depends on role definition
                                      programmers
• Credit
convincing your chair and dean • Assessment
of the value to your discipline text for questions and
                                      capturing user responses in
                                      database for later analysis
This Talk Focusses on the Game
              Programmer
• Instructor is analog, • Students are born
built z80 kit in ‘78 and digital, gamers
helped Internet grow up • New to collaboration
• Typical “silo” traits outside their field
• Course prerequisites – • Teamwork in field is not
data structures - ensure new (CS 583),
  real programmers teamwork beyond field
• Course content – is challenging
2d game individually (vocabulary and skills)
  3d game as team
Project Success
• Diverse faculty to maintain focus and
  “interesting” weekly discussions
• Sequence of coders over 3 years all took
  CS583 for common background
• IGDA and ESA current status of game
  development world (CS583 and after)
• MatsISLE Useful example of Serious Games
(thanks to Chris Harz who speaks to CS583)
