By: Kristen terSteege
Luddites:

3 Main Beliefs, Values or Actions Taken:
1. First person to have destroyed industrial machinery in 1779.
2. Disgruntled textile workers formed the Army of Redressers

machines should never be more valued then the human life.
Quotation: “Are we aware of our obligations to a mob? It is the mob that labour in your fields and
serve in your houses—that man your navy, and recruit your army—that have enabled you to defy the
world, and can also defy you when neglect and calamity have driven them to despair. You may call the
people a mob; but do not forget that a mob too often speaks the sentiments of the people.” –George
Gordon Noel Byron
Ice Cream Store?: I think that this could be in the Liberalism ice cream store because they
believe that the individuals of society are important, they respect and protect the people’s
right to work. And have a way to choose leaders and influence the
leader’s decision.
Chartists:
Main Thinker(s): London Working Men’s
Association. Francis Place, William Lovett, and Henry
Hetherington.
3 Main Beliefs, Values or Actions Taken:
1. Made People’s Charter of 1838 which outlined six points:
a. Universal suffrage for all men over 21
b. Equal-sized electoral districts
c. Voting by secret ballot
2. d. an end to the need for property
qualifications for Parliament.
e. Pay for Members of Parliament
f. Annual elections
2. The major initiative of the Chartist was presenting the
Charter to Parliament in 1839 with 1.25 million signatures.
3. Got arrested and imprisoned, marched out of prison
which got 24 killed and 40 wounded.
2 Quotation(s): “Universal suffrage means meat and drink and clothing, good hours, and good
beds and good substantial furniturefor every man, woman and child who will do a fair day's
work. Universal suffrage means a complete mastery, by all the people over all the laws and
institutions in the country; and with that mastery the power of providing suitable employment
for all, as well as of securing to all the full proceeds of their employment.” –Bronterre O’Brien
“A man willing to work, and unable to find work, is perhaps the saddest sight that fortunes
inequality exhibits under this sun.” –William Lovett
Ice Cream Store? I believe this ideology would be found in the Liberal Ice Cream store because
it follows all of the four pillars especially the right to decide who their leaders on and the right
to somehow influence their leaders decisions.
Utopian Socialists:
Main Thinker(s): Sir Thomas Moore and Robert Owen
3 Main Beliefs, Values, or Actions Taken:
1. Wrote a book called Utopia which outlined his concept of ideal
society.
2. Humanitarians who advocated an end to the appalling
conditions of the average work during the Industrial
Revolution.
3. Education was very important, establish the Institute for
Formation of Character (community education center)
2 Quotations by Main Thinker(s):
3. 1. “Finding the right work is like discovering your own soul in the
world.” –Sir Thomas Moore”
2. “To train and educate the rising generation will at all times be
the first object of society, to which every other will be subordinate". –
Robert Owen
Ice Cream Shop? I believe that this ideology would also be found in the
liberalism ice cream shop because by providing education for all this
ideology is improving conditions for its citizens and improving their
knowledge on ideas such as safety in the work place etc.
Marxists:
Main Thinker(s): Karl Marx
3 Main Beliefs, Values, or Actions Taken:
1. The only way to overthrow capitalism was by means of class
struggle between the workers and the owners. You needed a
workers revolution.
2. The abolition of private property and the centralization of
the factories and machinery.
3. Economics was the foundations of society and the means of
production suchas factories needed to be in workers hands.
2 Quotations:
1. “Capitalist production, therefore, develops technology, and the combining together of
various processes into a social whole, only by sapping the original sources of all wealth -
the soil and the laborer.”– Karl Marx
2. “Let the ruling classes tremble at a communist revolution. The proletarians have
nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win. Workingmen of all countries,
unite”!-Karl Marx
Ice Cream Store: I don`t think the Marxist ideology belongs in a liberal ice cream store because
one of the main beliefs is too abolish private property. Private property is one of the main
pillars/ideas of liberalism so without this Marxism cannot be found in the ice cream store.
4. Classical Conservatists:
Main Thinker(s): Edmund Burke
3 Main Beliefs, Values or Actions Taken:
1. Government should be chosen by a minority of people
who have special rights and privileges.
2. The only reason to make change to societies institutions
would be to protect institutions from radical or
revolutionary change.
3. Society should be structured in hierarchy-people do not
have equal abilities. Those with the ability to lead should
be leaders.
2 Quotes:
1. “Frugality is founded on the principal that all riches have limits.” –Edmund Burke
2. “Nothing turns out to be so oppressive and unjust as a feeble government.” -
Edmund Burke
Ice Cream Store? Classical Conservatism should not be in a liberalism ice cream store because
it does not focus on the individual rather the group and it also doesn’t give every individual a
right to vote or influence their leaders decisions.
