Woodstock Kristin Boyd 5th Period
WHY SHOULD WE CARE ABOUT WOODSTOCK? -Woodstock was the pop culture music event of the decade and arguably to this day the single most profound event in the history of music. -This was a celebration of music and peace that met at Max Yasgur's Farm in Bethel, NY on August 15-18, 1969. -A whole generation was defined by Woodstock 1969, and it’s effects can still be felt today on the American culture.
CURRENT EVENTS IN THE LATE 1960s EARLY 1970s This decade can also be summed up with a few well chosen phrases which epitomize the decade " The Space Race ", " Cuban Missile Crisis" , " Continuing Cold War", "Kennedy Assassination", " Martin Luther King", "Vietnam", "Civil Rights and Riots", "Hippies and Flower Power" , "The Beatles and Rock and Roll“.

I DREAM OF JEANNIE BECAME ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR SHOWS OF THIS TIME.
music The Beatles THE ROLLING STONES “Following on from the 50's rock and roll with Bill Hayley and Elvis Presley new groups appear in the 60's who are considered as an alternative music culture but become so popular that they quickly become mainstream, two of the dominant forces being THE BEATLES and THE ROLLING STONES who gain world wide notoriety and popularity.”

PEOPLE INVOLVED Cancelled Acts Jeff Beck Group (The band broke up in July, forcing cancellation) Iron Butterfly (Stuck at the airport, their manager demanded helicopters and special arrangements just for them. Were wired back and told, as impolitely as Western Union would allow, "to get lost", but in other 'words'.) Joni Mitchell (Joni's agent put her on "The Dick Cavett Show" instead) Lighthouse (Feared that it would be a "bad scene".) Ethan Brown (Arrested for LSD three days before the event.)    Declined Invitations The Beatles (John Lennon said he couldn't get them together) Led Zeppelin (Got a higher paying gig at the Asbury Park Convention Hall in New Jersey that weekend) Bob Dylan (Turned it down because of his disgust of the hippies hanging around his house) The Byrds (Turned it down because of a melee during their performance at the first Atlanta International Pop Festival, held at the Atlanta International Raceway on July 4 and July 5, 1969) Tommy James & the Shondells (Turned it down because of being misinformed about the size and scope of the event) JethroTull (Turned it down because they thought it wouldn't be a big deal.) The Moody Blues were included in the original posters as performers, but backed out after taking a gig in Paris on the same weekend. Spirit (they had other shows planned and did not want to back out of their commitments; not knowing how big that Woodstock would ultimately become) Mind Garage (Declined because they thought it wouldn't be a big deal and had a higher paying gig elsewhere) Organizers: “Roberts, in addition to being a commissioned Army officer was heir to a multi-million dollar trust fund. Rosenman, the musician, had a law degree but no specific plans for how to spend the rest of his life. Kornfeld was a successful songwriter and record producer. Lang and Kornfeld became pals at their first meeting, in which Lang was looking for a record deal for a band he managed. The two began brainstorming plans for a recording studio in the pastoral setting of upstate New York in a little town called Woodstock. To introduce it, they envisioned a small festival that would include a rock concert and an art fair.”
