As more Enterprises deploy virtualizedenvironments, they often find that these environments contain hundreds of interrelated settings, requiring active performance and capacity tuning; otherwise, workload densities fall and virtualization costs soar.
Veloxum created a process for automated OS optimization called “Active, continuous optimization” or ACO. ACO is simple to understand since one can find examples of ACO processes throughout modern life, to ensure that tasks are completed as efficiently as possible in dynamic environments. Auto-focus cameras and camcorders make sure photographers maintain optimal focus and lighting so they can take great pictures. Hybrid cars constantly determine how to optimally store energy for maximum saving fuel, and modern flight systems optimally calculate the flight paths for fuel savings and safe landings, often completely independent of a pilot! Like these other ACO processes, IT organization increasingly need to make sure that OS settings are optimally set within their dynamic, virtualized environments to provide IT services as quickly and efficiently as possible. With the rising costs of virtualized infrastructure, the time for active, continuous optimization of OS settings has arrived.
How complex is this issue? Let’s take some sample numbers for Microsoft Exchange running on VMwareThere are 115 discrete settings affecting performance and capacity (read the footnote if the audience is technical and want details)If grouped into related settings, there are close to 175M settings possibilitiesIf you were to test all possibilities for the best combination, it would take 56 years to test them all at a rate of 10 seconds per test.
Veloxum software brings ACO to the data center. Using its patent-pending ACO process, Veloxum software collects metrics across the infrastructure to solve capacity and performance issues. Next, it automatically calculates the values for hundreds of interrelated settings, and then continuously updates those settings to maximize performance and capacity of changing workloads.
Veloxum calculates optimum settings for groups of interdependent settings. Within VMware and Guest OS’s, these include memory, CPU, network, and storage settings. Veloxum also contains application-specific optimizations for some Enterprise applications such as Citrix VDI, Microsoft Exchange, and Microsoft SQLserver.
Veloxum software is made up of three parts. The first is a guest-resident, light-weight Veloxum agent that reports metrics and receive settings updates for each optimized guest OS and associated application. The second is a Veloxum server that runs as a 64-bit VMware virtual appliance that collects agent metrics and pushes new settings to them. The third and last component is the Veloxum Management Console. It allows viewing server metrics or optionally pushing new settings manually to clients.
