How well are your
Bones?
MR. PATRIK CARABUENA
Objectives:


Enumerate and describe some common disease
of the skeletal system.



Explain the common causes for fractures,
dislocations, sprains and strains.



Give precautionary measures to prevent bone
injuries.
Several disease that involve the
Skeletal System:


Clubfoot: A congenital deformity in which the foot of the baby is
twisted inward. This condition can be corrected by stretching the
foot towards the correct position as soon as diagnosis is made.
Early detection and treatments avoid the need of surgery.



Congenital hip dislocation: This is present at birth, but it can only
be detected when the child starts walking. If the doctors
detects a tightness in the hips, then it may be congenital hip
dislocation.



Rickets: When the bones do not harden normally due to lack of
calcium and phosphorous. The bone may become deformed,
as with bowleggedness.
Several disease the involves
Skeletal System:


Pagget’s disease: The bone in the leg, skull or spine becomes
overgrown and deformed because of calcium deposits.



Osteoporosis: This is the thinning of bone tissues, making them porous
and brittle.



Osteomyelitis: An infection in the bone caused by bacteria.



Arthritis: Characterized by pain or inflammation of the joints and the
tissues supporting them.



Bursitis: painful inflammation of a bursa, which is a pouch containing a
small amount of fluid. Pain occurs when the fluid becomes infected by
bacteria or irritated by injury. Bunion is a bursitis in a big toe.
Injuries:


Fracture: Occurs when there’s a break in the bone. This
happens if there is too much force or stress applied on
the bone.



Dislocation: Occurs when a bone gets removed from
its joint.



Sprain: The joints gets twisted too much and the
ligaments get torn. Usually occur in the ankle, knee,
wrist or shoulder.



Strain: Where tendons or muscle gets affected. A strain
is caused by overstretching a tendon or muscle.
Remember R.I.C.E for sprains and
strains:


Rest the injured area for 24 to 48 hours.



Ice to the injured area for 5 to 20 minute every
hour until the swelling subsides.



Compress the area by wrapping it tightly with an
elastic bandage for 30 mins, then unwrap it for
15 minutes.



Elevate or raise the area to reduce the swelling.
Did you know about this?
Through surgery, bones or joints that have been
destroyed because of a disease or an accident
can be replaced with metallic implants made of
titanium. Titanium is resistant to corrosion when it is
exposed to air or in a biological environment like
the body. It can easily be shaped. It is compatible
with human tissue. There have been no reports of
any allergic reaction to titanium transplant.
