Give you facts and figure About the damage incivility or its alias horizontal violence does to the workforce, the bottom line and worst of all the patient. Course if you hear the word violence you won’t be able to stop thinking about how I managed to come by a black eye.Compared nursing’s as being similar the civil rights and feminist movement.
- Relate to self. Grew up as a nurse hearing the phrase, “Nursing eats its young.” And, I experienced it and saw it as a student. I had some more experience with bosses that had no business in any type of leadership position. But, basically I skated with little damage. But then I learned the other part of the phrase. Not only does nursing eat its young, but it knonda snacks on everyone and then it desserts on its old. I left a place I had worked at for 34 years and paraphrasing Forrest Gump, That’s enough said about that.The elephant in the room. What is it? Like SUPREME COURT ruling on pornography: I KNOW IT WHEN I SEE IT!SIMPLE as a LOOK, MOTION or PHRASE. We all know what aggression is.

- What does Incivility or HV cause? Absenteeism, Retention, Recruitment, It affects the level of care. JCAHO thought it enough of a problem to institute a standard in 2008 about disruptive behavior as part of their Sentinel event policy. SADLY docs
- Commit to not being a jerk. If you’re in leadership commit set forth a “NO JERKS RULE.” At one point in my career I my VP had her entire sign a document titled a “commitment to my coworkers.” Don’t sign on with a bunch of jerks! In addition to interviewing for a job make them audition for you. Go look and see for yourself.
- AACN believes that solutions to the critical issues of inadequate staffing and the nurse shortage will not be successful or lasting unless the problem of unhealthy work environments is corrected. Negative, demoralizing andunsafe conditions in workplaces are widespread. This must not continue. Patients’ lives are at risk. Nurses’ valuablecontributions are at risk. The mission and purpose of our organizations and profession are at risk. The time has come to act deliberatelyand powerfully. To focus our voice on tackling the painful issues we are facing in our work environments. To work on these issues until they are resolved, once and for all. It is the only choice we can make. Inaction is unethical.
