Students are challenged to conceive, design, and create products using science, technology, and entrepreneurship to solve 21 st century, real-world problems. Open internationally. 2010-2011 Spirit of Innovation Categories Lockheed Martin Aerospace Exploration: Create an innovative product for use in aerospace exploration. Clean Energy: Design an innovative product using clean energy, increased energy efficiency, or energy storage technology to improve everyday life. Lockheed Martin Cyber Security: Create a Smartphone app to make you more secure in the real world or enhance our awareness of, and protection against, online threats. Student Requirements Teams register online, create a team, and submit product documents: Technical Report, Business Plan, Graphic Representation online by January 17, 2011 . 4. Create an innovative product for use in aerospace exploration. Cyber Security The Aerospace Exploration category encompasses any products with reasonable commercial opportunity in the aerospace industry. From vehicles to spacesuits; from planetary exploration to satellites; from space medicine to Earth observation, the industry is ripe for innovation. When asked why we need to explore space, a myriad of answers will likely be given. Everything from the need to “Save humanity from extinction,” to the simple, “because its there.” Whatever the reason, new technologies will be needed to reach the stars. This category challenges student teams to develop viable products that can help move the aerospace industry forward in our exploration of, knowledge about, or experience in space.

5. The Renewable Energy Challenge Category includes products across all renewable energy sources such as solar, geothermal, wind energy, and biomass fuels, as well as many other sustainable solutions. In response to the threat of global climate change, many new inventions and technologies have surfaced. Renewable energies such as wind energy and solar energy may have been around long before our warming climate reached headlines, yet today they are seen as key components that can offer alternatives to our reliance on carbon emitting fossil fuels. 6. Create a smartphone app to enhance our awareness of, and protection against threats around us. Cellular phones have become ubiquitous extensions of our lives. As smartphone technology improves, our phones will augment not only our voices, but also our situational awareness (knowledge of where we are, how fast we’re moving and in what direction, what is around us, and how to get where we want to be). Many of us have used applications such as Google Maps to help us find directions from our location to a destination. Even better, we can share our awareness with our friends. All we need are the tools to take advantage of the information. Aerospace Exploration

8. Where We Need Volunteers Volunteers are needed for each event at the Innovation Summit.

9. Ballroom Volunteers Finalist Presentations, Keynote Speeches, Entertainment, and Opening and Closing Ceremonies will take place in the Ballroom . Ballroom Volunteer Task Description: • Ensure that teams’ presentations are loaded and any props they might have for their presentation are in their correct place. • Answer the judges’ and students’ questions. • Enforce the time limits of each presentation. • Ensure microphones are working. • Help our featured entertainers with equipment and answer any of their questions.

10. Fireside Chats Fireside Chats provide students an up-close and personal opportunity to meet and learn from a variety of scientists, industry leaders and entrepreneurs. These chats are casual and intended for students to get a “ one-on-one ” experience. Fireside Volunteers will: • Meet with the fireside speaker and ensure they are aware of where they need to be at their scheduled time slot. • Make sure the fireside area is clear and ready for discussion. • Attend the fireside session and make sure everything runs smoothly. Terminate the chat when time is up. • If microphones are required, test equipment beforehand to limit the change of malfunction.

11. Discussion Sessions Discussion Sessions are open discussions between 4-5 subject matter experts and a group full of students. A moderator will conduct the direction of the discussion and the panel of experts will share their experiences. Students will be able to participate in the discussion by asking questions and sharing their own commentary. Discussion Volunteer Task Description: • Volunteers for discussion sessions will be responsible for informing the 4-5 speakers of the time and location of their talk. • They will escort the speakers to their appropriate location and will standby near the stage to handle microphones if needed. • Volunteers will keep the discussion within the time limits.
