A big thank you to the Leadership Group who is developing into a pragmatic and

given their heart and soul for the Old Westbourne Football Club.
 RUSSO PAVING
& Wayne Nott The contributions of whole families, the McGinnes’s, Connors, Lears, Clarkes,
Horsburgh’s and the Boards have put the Club in an excellent position not only for the
future, but have also ensured the day to day running of the Club has been a success.

This year’s winner of the Ivan Board trophy has been shared by two people that have
worked selflessly for the Club on training nights, weekends and spent countless hours
ensuring that all our members are given every opportunity to succeed. It is with great

not only for the now but also into the future.
                          President’s Message

Graeme is currently on an overseas holiday with his family.

Steve has served as the assistant coach of the Under 14’s and as team manger of not
only reserves but also the seniors on most occasions this year. Steve wears his heart
Albion Hotel on his sleeve and has a motto that Jimmy Stynes has etched into the hearts and minds
of many football followers of ‘doing whatever it takes’. Congratulations Steve and
                                                Graeme.

Life memberships are the highest honour the Club can bestow on any of its members.

Its not always about the numbers, how many years of service or how many games the
person has played, but about the passion and the commitment of doing something
special not only for me but for my mates and the Club. He is respected and revered in
many close knit circles of the Club. Many times he is unassuming and slips under the
                                                radar. Well done Mark.

Congratulations to all the individual Junior and Senior players for winning their
Wyndham Denture respective team awards, and especially to those who have received League

and thanked at their respective presentation nights, including Committee members.

Patten Pavement I encourage all to attend the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 27th October at
Services 7pm (in the James Mitchell Centre – Westbourne School), and hence remind all

…And from the Senior Coach on Presentation Night.
       (Laverton)
It was great to see so much support for the Club on a very special night while we are
all after team success it is still important to recognize some individual efforts.
It was an interesting year as far as our results went and our consistency.
Our best was certainly good enough however our worst wasn’t pretty.
We welcomed a number of new players to the Club and it took as a few rounds to get
the team to gel, but I think any time you make finals that is a good result and we
probably finished were we deserved to finish, hopefully from the result the players
RUSSO PAVING learn from areas of weakness and improve on them over the summer.
& Wayne Nott As some of you may be aware I have decided to step down as Senior Coach of
Westbourne, the people who know me well understand this was not an easy decision
and probably wasn’t made until Jo and I found out that we are expecting our 3rd Child.
Given this addition I have decided to free up some time to support my wife and
                                                children.
Amazing football Club, we have been through some challenging times not just on the
footy field but also off, and it was during these times that I realised the importance
the footy Club plays as a support network for all. I had it on the player’s handbook
Statewide Water which we used for recruitment that it is more than just a football Club. I honestly
Cartage believe this and it has shown true in so many of these difficult situations. While we all

surprised me, he bulked up over summer and came back with plenty of confidence.

The team struggled for consistency throughout the season and for a number of
reasons. After starting the season off in fine fashion, winning the first three games,
playing stocks then became limited by injury and unavailability. The fact that again 57

that many reserves players had the chance to be promoted and play senior football,

Newsletter September 2010

  • 1. Old Westbourne AFC Club Newsletter www.oldwestbourneafc.com.au Issue Number & Date: Issue 28, 30th September 2010 (Laverton) Compiled & Edited By: Herb Gallina Senior Teams Exit Early in Finals! Chris Hudson wins Senior Best & Fairest Award. Welcome to all players, families, officials, volunteers, sponsors and supporters. After exits in week 3 for our Junior U14 (Grand Finalist) & U11 (Preliminary Introduction & Welcome RUSSO PAVING & Wayne Nott Finalists) teams, high hopes were held for our Senior sides in their respective finals campaigns. However the fairytale was not to be, with the U19s, Reserves and Seniors all eliminated in Week 1 at Waverley Park, in what was a brutal and sad day for Old Westbourne. Despite no ultimate prizes, we should all be proud that 5 out of 9 eligible Old Westbourne teams competed in the finals for 2010! Following our successful Auction Night and the Major Raffle Day, the Senior Presentation Night turned out to be another successful event, with Statewide Water congratulations going to Chris Hudson for taking out the Senior B&F award. Cartage Leigh Barnes, Brad Saunders and Brian Knee took out the respective (Statewide Labour Hire) Reserves, U19 and Club18 awards. (More details inside). In this issue, I’ll provide a snapshot summary of footy results (including finals & B&F results) and update you on ground conditions, site access and key dates, including the Club’s AGM on Wednesday October 27, from 7pm (James Mitchell Centre). Thanks to all our volunteers and sponsors for 2010. Go the Cricketers! – who are still looking for a coach, curator and more players! (see details) Keep working towards those common goals on and off the field. Go Warriors! Albion Hotel From our Club President, Adrian Lipscombe: Hello to all, Looking back at the year we have had, together with our 300 members, 11 teams play football this year, with 5 of them making the finals out of a possible 9. The under 14’s made the grand final the 11’s the preliminary final and the seniors, reserves and the 19’s making the semi finals. Congratulations to our U14s coach President’s Message Shaun Ellis who was named the Youth Coach of the year for the Western Region. Justin Horsburgh has announced his retirement. I had the pleasure of playing with Justin some 14 years ago. Let’s wish Justin well on his future endeavours and thanks for providing us with such wonderful highlights in such a stellar career. Wyndham Denture Additionally Damien Billman, life member, Committee member and (this year) Vice Clinic President, will not run for re-election to the Committee for 2011. Damien is a passionate and respected member of the Club and will leave us in a great position for today and tomorrow. Patten Pavement Services Mark Stevens, Vice President, who this year has stepped down from the Committee after 5 years - a man who was a sounding board for many of us, leaves us with legacy of professionalism and passion that has ensured that Club will move forward for the MAIN ARTERY future. • 2. Old Westbourne AFC Club Newsletter www.oldwestbourneafc.com.au A big thank you to the Leadership Group who is developing into a pragmatic and (Laverton) energetic part of the Club, ensuring the player group are engaged and driving the Club forward. The Past Players Association has also gathered momentum thanks again to Jeff Wilson, Gavan Flower, Leon Fairfield and Damien Billman for their contributions. Ivan Board Trophy: Over the course of the season there are many people that have given their heart and soul for the Old Westbourne Football Club. RUSSO PAVING & Wayne Nott The contributions of whole families, the McGinnes’s, Connors, Lears, Clarkes, Horsburgh’s and the Boards have put the Club in an excellent position not only for the future, but have also ensured the day to day running of the Club has been a success. This year’s winner of the Ivan Board trophy has been shared by two people that have worked selflessly for the Club on training nights, weekends and spent countless hours ensuring that all our members are given every opportunity to succeed. It is with great pleasure that I announce that Steve Herman and Graeme Clark are the recipients Statewide Water of this year’s Ivan Board trophy. Cartage (Statewide Labour Hire) The relationships and the work they have undertaken, not only this year but in years gone by, will serve the Club in all key areas of its operations and strategic direction, not only for the now but also into the future. President’s Message Graeme is currently on an overseas holiday with his family. Steve has served as the assistant coach of the Under 14’s and as team manger of not only reserves but also the seniors on most occasions this year. Steve wears his heart Albion Hotel on his sleeve and has a motto that Jimmy Stynes has etched into the hearts and minds of many football followers of ‘doing whatever it takes’. Congratulations Steve and Graeme. Life memberships are the highest honour the Club can bestow on any of its members. Congratulations to Mark Aquilina on receiving life membership of the Old Westbourne Football Club. He is not always a mild mannered person but a ferocious warrior on and off the field. Its not always about the numbers, how many years of service or how many games the person has played, but about the passion and the commitment of doing something special not only for me but for my mates and the Club. He is respected and revered in many close knit circles of the Club. Many times he is unassuming and slips under the radar. Well done Mark. Congratulations to all the individual Junior and Senior players for winning their Wyndham Denture respective team awards, and especially to those who have received League Clinic recognition. A huge thanks to all the volunteers who were rightfully acknowledged and thanked at their respective presentation nights, including Committee members. • 15. Old Westbourne AFC Club Newsletter www.oldwestbourneafc.com.au …And from the Senior Coach on Presentation Night. (Laverton) It was great to see so much support for the Club on a very special night while we are all after team success it is still important to recognize some individual efforts. It was an interesting year as far as our results went and our consistency. Our best was certainly good enough however our worst wasn’t pretty. We welcomed a number of new players to the Club and it took as a few rounds to get the team to gel, but I think any time you make finals that is a good result and we probably finished were we deserved to finish, hopefully from the result the players RUSSO PAVING learn from areas of weakness and improve on them over the summer. & Wayne Nott As some of you may be aware I have decided to step down as Senior Coach of Westbourne, the people who know me well understand this was not an easy decision and probably wasn’t made until Jo and I found out that we are expecting our 3rd Child. Given this addition I have decided to free up some time to support my wife and children. Amazing football Club, we have been through some challenging times not just on the footy field but also off, and it was during these times that I realised the importance the footy Club plays as a support network for all. I had it on the player’s handbook Statewide Water which we used for recruitment that it is more than just a football Club. I honestly Cartage believe this and it has shown true in so many of these difficult situations. While we all (Statewide Labour Hire) love our football it is actually secondary to the relationships and bonds we build over SENIOR COACH REPORT our time at such a great Club. I know for Jo and I we have meet some lifelong friends here at Westbourne and we thank you for welcoming us in. Awards B&F Chris Hudson Early had to adjust to local footy again which at some times can be challenging, He is an absolute stand out player in our competition and it all starts with the standards he sets on the track, which he was able to instil into the team over the last 2 months of Albion Hotel the season. Work rate is unbelievable the stand out for me was against OP in the last round were he just willed himself to every contest in the last 5 mins. I have no doubt he would be a great captain in the future. R Up Justin Johns Fantastic recruit to the footy Club, came on as an assistant coach so with the extra responsibility was still able to stay focused on his footy. Probably didn’t play in his traditional position on the wing but I thought he just set us up on the half back line. Another one who leads by example on the training track. Also our highest vote getter in the League B and F 3rd Swoop What can I say, Mr consistant over the last three seasons Swooper has finished in the top 3, which is a fantastic effort, this year he stepped it up with his fitness and came back pre season in the best shape he has been in since U19 days. He just does the best he can every week and has clearly had another outstanding season. Best First Year: Daniel Riosa Wyndham Denture It’s always enjoyable working with young up and coming players as usually they have Clinic come up from the junior ranks as the best players and then all of a sudden they need to work their way back up from the bottom, and let me tell you this guy really surprised me, he bulked up over summer and came back with plenty of confidence. Patten Pavement For most of the year it would be fair to say he didn’t play in his preferred position but Services played a very important role each week, some weeks in the middle others down back. • 16. Old Westbourne AFC Club Newsletter www.oldwestbourneafc.com.au (continued) (Laverton) Coaches Award: Chris Hudson It’s pretty tough to come up with the coaches award as there are so many players that work hard and try their best for the team, but this guy is somebody that I believe in the last 2 years has improved out of site in my view, simply by being able to understand and implement our game plan every week under all conditions. He is probably somebody that may not have been in everybody best side come start of the RUSSO PAVING year but I guarantee he would have been at the end. He played his role and was & Wayne Nott rarely beaten. I believe in getting honest feedback from the players regularly as if you get it at the end of the year it is too late, this guy I would call after every single training session for the past 2 years and would give me honest feedback on training and games. I know I could not have improved as a coach without his support. He also understood how important social function where to me when it comes to bringing a team together and even though he was not the social coordinator he took on this SENIOR COACH REPORT responsibility I am sure to help support me and the Club. For these reasons I am very honoured to acknowledge Miller. Statewide Water Cartage Thank You’s (Statewide Labour Hire) The Club for the Opportunity to coach it was always a goal of mine to coach and to have had the opportunity to coach at such a supportive Club has been a great experience. Committee especially Ace, Billy, Mic, Cliff, Fridge, Mark, Greame Senior Coaches Slatts, Johnsy, Buzz, Simon, Phil, Darren, Freddy, Matty, Dave Coxy Albion Hotel Support staff Steve (kids), Millhouse, Chuck, Barnesy, Matty, Jess, Kate, Tarni, Amanda, Blake, Amy, Ebony Leadership Group Special Mention to Ivan I have never seen a man do so much work on his own, be up at 8 down opening the gates pottering around then staying until functions are completed midnight and locking up. • 17. Old Westbourne AFC Club Newsletter www.oldwestbourneafc.com.au (Laverton) Reserves Report 2010 The team struggled for consistency throughout the season and for a number of reasons. After starting the season off in fine fashion, winning the first three games, playing stocks then became limited by injury and unavailability. The fact that again 57 players represented the reserves, is testament to that. The positive comes in the fact that many reserves players had the chance to be promoted and play senior football, which wasn’t detrimental to their end result. RUSSO PAVING & Wayne Nott Having a number of younger players was a bonus for this Club, especially the core group that came from last season’s Under 19’s. With youth comes inconsistency and Team News and Player Milestones this certainly showed through the middle part of our reserves season. Persistence and a much better performance in the last seven games rewarded the players with a finals experience. & Special News The one stumbling block to this team was Old Paradians. After two heavy in-season defeats, they again were too overwhelming in the final. When we look back as a team, results showed that on our day we were a fine outfit. Statewide Water Having beaten eventual premier Banyule and losing to them by only 3 points away and Cartage running the other Grand Finalist Bentleigh to two close losses, proves that with more (Statewide Labour Hire) effort and consistency the team is not far away. From my perspective, I pass on my best and thanks, to outgoing Senior Coach, Brett Connors for his fine work. I also wish to thank my assistant, Phil Mesman who handled the sidelines when I was on the playing field. Steve Herman was an enormous contributor to our team and his best Clubman award is indicative of this. To the many other volunteers and committee, your efforts are acknowledged. Albion Hotel Congratulations must also go to our award winners and Leigh Barnes and Josh Lawn certainly justified their performance. Our Captains Mark Aquilina, when available and Dean Stanley, lead from the front. I encourage all players to work hard in the off- season. I can certainly look forward to the development of some fine youngsters over coming seasons with the likes of Riches, Zhang, Willson, Diblasi, Andrades and Leighton to name a few.
