2. Questionnaire overview of
results
I conducted a questionnaire that I gave to 25 people. I mainly gave the
questionnaires to my target audience of the magazine that I want to create, so this is
younger people as they tend to like the genre of music that my magazine will
be, more (Indie). However I also gave my questionnaire to older people to see there
views on different genres and how magazines are laid out and what they think
should be added to music magazines to make them better. I conducted a
questionnaire so that I could see what the public liked so I can make a magazine that
people will want to buy and read.
Overall, found out what I should and should not do for my own indie music
magazine.
I found that I should:
• Have an appealing artist on the front cover to draw people in and get peoples
attention.
• Have bold writing/ colours to make the magazine stand out.
•Low price.
•Publish fortnightly.
•Add in crossover to other genres, and not just the one that the magazine is mainly
aimed at.
•Add images and writing onto the double page spread equally, along with interviews
and information on other artists too.

I asked the gender of the person as this would help me to see what each gender prefers
in music. I asked more females because this tends to be the target audience for indie
music even though it has a wide target audience overall.

The most common age group that answered my questionnaire is 15-18 year
olds, however I also gave my questionnaire to older people to get more of a variety of
answers so that my audience can be bigger and span more of variety of people.
5. Question 3

What music genres do you
prefer? Why?

0
Reasons: They preferred the way there favourite genre of music sounds and the different instruments that are use
to make the overall sound, also they like the artists that are involved in this specific genres and they like the
concerts that the artists in there preferred genre do.
I asked this question to see what type of music people usually listen to in there spare time and why they like this
music/ what it involves that they like. Indie appears to be quite popular preferred genre as they like the concerts
that the artists do and the different aspects that link into that genre.

A lot of people in my questionnaire said that they would like a new music magazine aimed
at the Indie genre, this was because there isn’t many of this genre around in the shops
already as there is a lot of rock and pop but not many that include indie. This shows that
indie is a genre that people want to see more of (in magazines for example).

This question on my questionnaire helps me to see what artists people like listening to helping me
to see what indie artists they have mentioned, to see what to include inside my magazine. The
people I asked all said a variety of different artists from different genres showing everyone has
different favourite artists and likes different types of genres in the music industry, no matter than
gender or age.

8. Question 6- What artists can you name
from different decades?
• Results:
60’s: The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis
Presley, Pink Floyd.
70’s: David Bowie, Bob Marley and The Wailers, The clash, Stevie wonder.
80’s: Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Phil Collins, Whitney Houston.
90’s: 2pac, Nirvana, Snoop Dogg, Tom Petty, Nas, Oasis, Blur, Busta
Rhymes.
00’s: Jay Z, Kanye West, Eminem, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Justin
Timberlake, Lil Wayne.
These results tell me that the people that I asked this question too do
know quite a lot a bout different decades of music and not only about
the decade we are in showing they might want to find out more about
these artists so I could include some artists from different decades into
my music magazine to make the audiences knowledge of music better.

Yes
No
Reasons- Yes: There isn’t enough existing indie magazines in the shops, they like this genre so would like to find
out more about it and they would like to see what artists are actually involved in this genre.
No: They do not like this genre, so would prefer to buy other music magazines that are aimed at other genres
and they don’t buy music magazines.
This question shows that a lot of the people I asked actually would buy a indie music magazine as there is a
gap in the music magazine market for one which is actually wanted by the public. This question shows that
some people are simply just not into this genre but this is a small percent of the amount of people I asked.

Apealing Bold writing Attractive

front cover
This question tells me that the artist on the front cover has to be appealing to the target
audience to make people want to buy it because the artist on the front cover draws you
into it if you like that person and genre of music they are in. It also tells me that bold
writing and attractive colours are also important as they help draw you in too so you
can see what it says and what will be inside making you want to read it even more.

Reasons- 1: Has a layout which is easy to look at and has things written on it which makes you want to
buy it, tells you something that will be included in the magazine and because of the amount of artists
it mentions it suggests there is lots inside the magazine.
2: Has a current, popular artist on the front, which straight away draws you in to look at that specific
magazine, the colour and font are also attractive.
3: Bright colours used which attracts audience, looks like it only for one type of genre whereas other
magazines have some crossover, to much information on front cover.
12. Question 10-What would you include
or like to see included on a double
page spread of a music magazine?
• Answers:
• Images- big and small depending on what that bit is about.
• Articles on the main cover artist and different information
about what they do and who they are.
• Quotes/interviews from the front cover artist and other artists
that link in with these artists.
The answers to this question tells me that the double page
spread mainly needs to be about the cover artist but also
including other artists maybe from other genres that
crossover with my specific genre. It also tells me that there
needs to be a balance of images and writing to make it
successful.

£1-£2
£3-£4

£7+
This tells me that most of the people I asked would pay between £3-£4 or £1-£2. This
shows that people are not really willing to pay lots for a music magazine even if it does
have a lot of information it. So people want music magazines to be priced quite lower so
that they would be more inclined to buy them. This tells me I should price my music
magazine quite low so it would appeal to more people.

Monthly
The results to this question tell me that most people prefer music magazines to be
published fortnightly, suggesting that not everyone wants to buy magazines every
week, maybe giving them chance to read the last edition first. This gives me an idea of how
often my music magazine should be published.
