Point Of Sale Units
The height of this unit makes it
very clear and easy to see as this
unit is not in a shop it needs to
stand out and it does this very
well. This unit has been placed in
the centre of The Glades this
makes it very hard to miss. This
unit will be the most likely to
attract customers due to the
clever positioning. The design of
this unit is very simple yet
effective it has been designed
using glass to allow the
customers easy viewing of the
product. Overall this unit is good
as its height makes it easily visible
and the positioning allows it to
gain more attention than another
unit.
This product has been placed at
the front of the shop where any
passers by or customers of the
shop can view the product easily
and can test the product if
needed. The design has been
catered to suit the style of the
shop. It includes simplistic colours
and uses a simple font to display
the offer. The height of this
product is of an average height
and customers will not need to
stretch down to use the product.
Overall the unit stands out quite a
lot and will attract customers due
to the bright bold writing on the
front. Its positioning is at the
front allowing customers to see
it before entering the shop.
The height of this unit is ideal for the
viewing of the product and allows the
customers to have a clear view of
everything on the
unit. The colour scheme of this unit it all
brown due to the wood. It has used this as
the shops products are all based around
natural products. This unit has been placed
in the centre of the shop suggesting the
products are there main selling points. The
have used the simplicity of the wood to
their advantage. Overall this unit is very
good due to the positioning, height and
simplicity within the design.
The height of this is of an
average height and will
allow any customer to view
the item on sale. The
positioning of this unit
allows anyone entering the
shop have to pass it. The
unit has been designed
using very simple colours
and only includes black
and white. Overall this
product uses the colour
and positioning to its
advantage. Due to the
shop’s colour the unit fits
in great, however this unit
is not the best as the
simplicity does let it down
slightly.
This unit uses white and pink
which fits in perfectly with the
interior of the shop. This unit’s
design is good for displaying the
product as it uses a simplistic
style. This unit has been placed in
the window of the shop making it
very easy for passers by. This unit
is a great height for viewing and
will allow the public to easily view
the product on display.
Overall this unit is good at
displaying the product but bad at
puling customers in to buy the
product.
This is a very simple design
that incorporates simplistic
colours and allows the
customer to not be drawn
away by bright colour. The
height of this unit is of an
average height and will
attract customers as it is
almost eye level. This point of
sale unit has been placed at a
shop window allowing
passers by to view it. Overall I
think this product is an
average sale unit due to the
dull colours and lack of
innovation.
This unit has been placed in the centre of the
shop allowing all passers by to notice it. This
unit will be more likely to attract customers
compared to others just because of the
positioning of the unit. This point of sale is at
a great height as it makes it visible to any one
passing by. The colour scheme of this unit is
good as it incorporates bright colours this will
attract more people especially kids. The
design of this unit is great as it is fun and
different because of this design kids will be
more attracted to it. This unit incorporates
things that no other unit usually has.
This point of sale unit has been placed at the
front of the shop. It has been placed out of
the way which lose customers. This unit is
quite tall this ensures it is noticed by
members of the public. This unit needs the
height otherwise it will not attract the
attention of the public. The unit has been
designed specifically to cater for the lottery
cards, This unit features a space in which you
can write on. Overall this unit has great
height and design however its positioning Is
not the best as it limits the amount of
customers seeing it.
This unit clearly displays the product on sale, It allows
the customer to see the offer and product. It has
interactive features that allow users to use the product
this will reel the customer in and they will be more likely
to buy. The height of this unit is good as it is big enough
to attract customers. This point of sale unit has been
placed towards the front of the shop and as soon as you
walk in the shop it is straight in your line of view which
will draw you in. Overall this unit is good at displaying
the product and allows the customer to play around with
the product that they may be buying.
This unit is great as it uses interactive features
which allow anyone to test the product before
they buy it . This allows people to have a mess
around with the product on sale. This unit has a
great colour scheme that is fun and inventive
which allows many more customers to be
attracted to it. The height of this product is
actually really good as the pad and pen part of
the stand is at a height for there target audience
allowing them to have an advantage over other
units that are aimed at this range. Overall this
product uses great colours and great height
advantage which allows this unit to be a great
point of sale. The positioning of the product is
also great as it has been placed down an isle
relevant to the product.
This unit has great height making it visible from
many places in the shop. This unit is perfect
height for the type of unit it is. The colour
scheme of this product is great as it uses bright
colours all around and will easily attract
customers purely based on the bright appealing
colours. This unit has been placed in an excellent
location next to the escalators this allows the
unit to attract anyone wanting to go up the
escalators as they will have to pass the unit
before. Overall this unit has great positioning
and has been manufactured at an excellent
height.
This unit has a great theme that will allow it to attract
many people who are interested in the Olympics. It
incorporates the Olympic colours which help it look
official .The height of this product is ok as it is not too
small or too high however this means it will not attract a
lot of attention like other units. This unit has bad
positioning as it has not been placed in an area of the
shop where its going to reach its potential. It has been
placed at the start of an isle which makes it good in some
respect however its not in an isle where it will be
recognized properly. Overall this product has great
colours however due to its poor positioning the unit has
been let down and will not get the praise it need
This product has an amazing height advantage allowing
the unit to clearly stand out due to its height it is more
likely to gain a lot more attention. This unit has got
perfect positioning as it has a whole area dedicated to a
single product and accessories. The unit has been placed
next to the top of an escalator allowing anyone exiting
the floor has to go past the huge display. This unit has a
great colour that is simple yet effective it uses two
colours which allow it to stand out while still looking
professional. Overall this unit is great at attracting all
customers and is at great height advantage making it
dominant over other units.
Old spice have used very clever
marketing tools to ensure they get
the customer base that they need,
they have clearly started trying to
target a fairly young age which
probably ranges from 24 – 55.They
have also started trying to target
other ethnic groups they have done
this so that they can target more than
just one target group. I think old spice
have started putting men on their
branding thinking that the women are
going to buy it for someone male who
they know.
Hackett have started to
target the older
gentlemen this clearly
shows in their clothing
range however due to
their lack of fragrances it is
hard to tell whether they
are trying to the same
older gentlemen as shown
in their clothing. They have
a clothing range for
children this suggests that
they may have fragrances
for children aged 16+ and
fragrances for the older
gentlemen 26+.
Fish have a very strange
branding technique as they
try to target stylists who
are in their own business
using the products and
they have also created
products meant for people
age d 18+.Fish has a
confusing brand as many of
their products and their
main salon is based around
blue, They have then
produced products with
red packaging and red
bottles which drifts away
from their actual brand.
Mr.Natty have tried and
succeeded when trying to
target an audience they
have made it clear that they
are starting to target the
old gentlemen aged
35+.The have produced
products that only an older
gentlemen would use. They
have a very straight
forward marketing
technique using plain and
simple colours and using
the old fashioned wood
making the brand look very
stylish.
Lynx have a target
audience of 13 to 18
year olds. Their brand is
considered as a cheap
fragrance that is just
used for a smell. The
brand is too cheap for
anyone above the age
of 18 to want it as it
lasts 5 minutes and
does not serve a
specific purpose like
antiperspirant.
L’Oreal men expert
serves a purpose to
men aged 30+ they
have based all their
products around men's
treatment and
solutions to men’s
problems. Their two
man products are
antiperspirant and hair
growth cream.
About Company
Old spice is a n American male grooming brand that is
manufactured by Procter and Gamble. They acquired the brand
from the Shulton company in 1990.The first old spice product was
intended for women this was first introduced in 1937 they then
produced a product for men shortly after in 1938.Old spice
dominated in the sale of men’s shaving soap and aftershave lotion.
Sail ships are old spice’s trade mark. In the year 2000 they
introduced many more products including deodorants, body
washes and body sprays.
Price
Old spice have a middle ranged price of deodorant in comparison
the cheaper deodorant .Their retail price of cheapest deodorant
starts at £8 and can go up to £16.They have loads of different types
of aftershave which range from £18 to £40.This is a fairly
reasonable price and would allow a lot more people to afford a
aftershave like this. They have some very cheap products like
antiperspirant that can start at £3 and range up to £6 this is very
cheap and would appeal to many people.
Why I chose this company
I have chosen old spice as I believe that there style is new and sleek
and attracts a lot more people than they used to. They have started
to attract different culture’s and they have done this by introducing
a new modernised version of there what was seen to be old brand.
They have introduced a more stylish product that appeals to me a
lot more than any of the other brand’s.
Customers
Old spice has had an extreme makeover changing its customer
base from the old aged men to the younger teenage generation.
In 2001 old spice had become a top teen brand. They got involved
with NASCAR racer Tony Stewart this straight away changed the
interest of old spice and they became a modern brand that was
very appealing to teenagers. Old spice is now appealing to 18-45
year olds.
Reasons behind modernisation
The deodorant business grew steadily, but P&G realized it wasn't
drawing in men 25 to 45, who still remembered Old Spice as a old
brand which was for the older men. So P&G decided to skip a
generation and aim the brand at first-time deodorant users. To
reach this younger group, in 1999 P&G started handing out
samples of High Endurance to fifth-grade health classes, covering
90% of the nation's schools, as well as handing out "scratch-and-
sniff" book covers to junior highs. This allowed them to gain the
younger population in there brand. Old spice knew by targeting
the younger generation they would make much more money.
Situation
I have noticed that Old Spice have trouble getting the word out about
their brand. I think that Old Spice should start placing their products in
more shops and start to but their advertisements on TV.I also think they
need to produce a wider range of products that need to be placed within
more shops.
Brief
Design a new point of sale for a male grooming company.
The unit must display at least 1 product from their range
and must clearly identify the brand. Possible brands are Old

Logical
You need the Brand name clearly displayed so that any passers by will be able to see straight away which brand is advertising. Without the brand being clearly displayed people
may mistake your product for another. It is essential that you can see the product clearly this is mainly because people may be confused if the product is not clearly displayed.
Sometimes shops have point of sale units in corners which sometimes hide the product from potential customers causing the brand to lose out. Many people like to be able to
See the price clearly on the display this is so that they know how much it will cost them and is it worth paying the price for that product. If the point of sale is Positioned in eye
line it allows all the customers very likely to notice the point of sale if that means they interact with it or not. The point of sale is very effective in such a position as the customer
will be drawn straight to the point of display. The point of sale is great if positioned Near a till this is good as many people wait in queues, while they are waiting in this queue the
point of sales that are in front of the till will attract them to it as they have nothing better to do while in the queue. If the point of sale is brightly coloured it is more likely to
attract customers as it is eye catching. This will help with sales as it attracts people to the product. Interactivity is great in a point of sale as the customers will start playing with
the product and they will then know whether they like the product or not. It offers fun to the customers before purchase. Cluster free area is a essential as with a cluster free
area the product will easily be visible and no confusion will take place while looking at the product.
Illogical
If a product has the Same packaging it starts to become confusing for the customer and they then will need assistance from the employees of that shop and by that time many
customers will be fed up and will possibly leave the shop. If there is a point of sale the product should not be the same size as it, This may put customers off as they may see the
product as insignificant also the point of sale should not be too much bigger than the product as this can cause a problem as many people will see the display as showering the
product and will start to distract people from the product. If a point of sale has interactive features then this is good however if it is Too interactive then customers say the flaws of
the product and may not buy it. It will also give the customer time to see whether the product suits there needs. Trials of the product can be fatal and make people not purchase the
product. Perfume is a great example as they supply card to spray the product on to however the card is not human skin so the product will not smell how its supposed to.
Need
The ultimate things that are needed for a good point of sale and good sales of the
product are: The product is clearly displayed so that that the customer can see
what they are buying. The point of sale needs to attract the attention of the
customers if that means using bright colours or smell or sound. The point of sale
needs to be safe to all of the public to ensure no one gets hurt on the brands
product. The product has to have security tags on it to ensure the product is not
stolen depending on the price of the product. The point of sale needs to be able
to stand out compared to other point of sales.
Keep
The point of sale needs to keep the same customer base so that the target
audience is still interested. The point of sale still needs to keep only one
individual product on the display. The same traditional colours have to be kept
as customers may get confused if changed. The same masculinity of the brand
need to be kept due to the customer base. I will keep the brands logo and
name still on the front of the point of sale to ensure the customer is not
confused at what brand they are looking at. I will ensure the same target group
will be interested in the product as well as new customers.
Scrap
I will scrap some of the design ideas of the company to ensure they keep the same
customer base while luring in other customers. I will get rid of some of the boring
packaging supplied by company to try and bring a more sophisticated side to the brand.
I will scrap the material of cardboard as it is boring and a poor material when trying to
make your product look expensive. I would also scrap the idea that if a product is
cheaper it has less attention compared to the more expensive products.
Form VS Function
I will use materials that make the product look stylish expensive and sleek. I will not
be in favour of cheap materials such as cardboard I will focus on materials like glass
and metal. The glass can be used to enclose the product making it look very stylish
and exclusive. I will use interactive features making the point of sale unit stand out
from others. I will try to make my point of sale unit in the middle allowing it to look
stylish and still be able to work to a high standard.
X Factor
I will make my stand different from other point of sale units as I will use lighting that will
light up the unit and the area around it. This is not featured on any point of sale unit. I will
also use an interactive screen making my unit look expensive any worth while. By doing
this I should be able to attract more customers to my chosen brand .
Initial Specification
Aesthetics
The aesthetics of my point of sale will be based on the brand I
will do this by making the point of sale incorporate the same
colours. I will also use shapes that are featured frequently
through the old spice design. I will also use the same masculine
style that old spice use. I will use the products style to try and
make my point of sale fit the brand.
Cost
I will base the cost of my point of sale unit on the cost of my brand
as it will not fit in if the sale is much more expensive than the
product. I will be carful as I cannot make the manufacturing cost
of the point of sale too expensive due to the fact the products are
not too expensive. I also have to make sure the cost of recycling
the point of sale is not too expensive.
Customer
I will have to design the point of sale to suit what the customer likes
and how they expect the product to be display. I will have to make
sure that I make the point of sale to what the customer is actually
looking for. I will need to ensure the point of sale is what the
customer expects and is not completely different to what they
know and love.
Environment
The environment of my point of sale will be inside or outside the
shop I will be most likely to have my point of sale inside the shop and
have the point of sale positioned in the centre of the shop making
more customers likely to notice it once they are within the shop also I
will be carful as to which shop I place the point of sale in. I will need
to find out about the style of the shops that my chosen brand is
usually placed in.
Safety
I will make sure my product is safe to all heights of people and will make
sure there is no sharp edges and to ensure there is no tripping hazards' will
have to ensure my point of sale is made out of a sensible material which
will make it less of a hazard to people. I will need to also ensure my point
of sale is unable to be stolen as this could cause safety problems to the
public.
Size
I will need to make sure that my point of unit is of an average size to
allow the customers to be able to see the product comfortably. I will
need to make sure the point of sale unit does not swamp the product on
sale. I will make sure the product is of a certain size to ensure the point
of sale does not swamp the item.
Function
I will make sure the point of sale allows the customer to interact with it,
allowing the customer more likely to buy it. I will possibly supply testers
and freebies of the product so that the customers are sometimes more
likely to buy the product. I will make sure I don’t give out too many
freebies otherwise the customers may not want to buy the product as
they will either not like it or they may have not want to buy the product as
they have the freebie that has been given out.
Material
The material of my point of sale will have to be made out of a material
that relates to my brands customers. The material of the point of sale
will have to represent the price range in which my customer is willing to
pay for the brands product.
Research Plan
Mood board
To complete my mood board I will want to research the
brand I am choosing and I will study their style to ensure I
get the right type of mood board. When I create my mood
board I will want to learn about the brand and I will want to
learn what their motivation is when creating their products. I
will conduct my research using the old spice website to find
out what the brands colours and textures are I will also look
at their products in shops to find out what type of materials
they use in their product. I will need to know some
information about the brand before hand as I will need to
know what the brands customer base is as this will set the
mood board up very well. I will document the evidence in the
style of a mood board.
Customer Profiling
I will complete my piece of research on the customer by
observing the customer habits and what the customer is into
and what kind of style suits them. I will want to learn about
the customer and what the customers styles are. I will talk to
the customers and to the company to find out the exact
specifications of the customer and what they like. I will
conduct my research in the shops that house the product and
the places which promote the company. I will need to know
what shops house the products and I will need to know where
the advertisements of the brand goes. I will document the
evidence of the customer profile in a word document with the
required notes.
Brand Profiling
I will complete my piece of research on
the brand by studying the brand and how
the brand functions and by
understanding the brand’s style. I will
want to learn what the brand’s style is
and what their inspiration and logic is
behind their design and branding. I will
research on the internet and find out
about the brand to ensure I find out what
their style is. I will need to know how to
find all the pieces of research on the
internet and I will need to know where to
look for the brand style. I will document
the evidence on a PowerPoint where I
can display the style of the brand.
Environmental Snapshot
I will complete my environmental snapshot by
going to shops in which old spice is sold and
observe the environment and see whether the
environment suits the product. I will want to
learn how the product gets its positioning in the
shop and why it gets positioned their. I will talk
to the owners of the shop to see if it was there
decision to place the product where it is or
whether it was the brands idea to place it in that
specific place. I will conduct my research in the
shops that feature the product and the shops
that feature advertisements for the product. I
will document the evidence in a PowerPoint
presentation.
Questionnaire
I will complete my questionnaire by asking
members of the public what they think of
the point of sale and ask questions on
whether they think its effective or not. I
will want to learn about the customer and
how they see the point of sale and how it
comes across to them. I will want to know
what the customer thinks of the product. I
will want to know where the companies
main point of sales are. I will then
document the evidence in the style of a
questionnaire on a PowerPoint.
Market Research
To complete my market research I will first of all
need to find out where the companies main
products are located in shops and find out how
much attention these products get compared to
rival brands. I will want to learn about the rival
brands and the ideas behind some of their products
I will also want to know what makes their brand
stand out from others if it is shadowing other
brands. I will want to speak to some of the shop
owners to know whether my brand is reaching out
to customers and whether rival brands are
overtaking. I will then document the evidence in the
style of a PowerPoint.
First Hand Existing Design
Analysis
I will complete the design analysis by going
to shops and taking pictures of the
fragrances that are on display. I will then use
ACCESS FM to analyse the photos that I have
taken. I will want to learn how the company
and the shop like to display their fragrances
that are on display. I will talk to the shop
assistant to see whether I can take photos in
their shop. I will conduct my research in the
shops that feature fragrances on point of
sales. I will then document my research on a
PowerPoint presentation.
Ten Minute Observation
To complete my ten minute observation I will
want to choose a good point of sale and take
note of how many potential customers go over
to the point of sale and actually take interest
into it. i will want to learn how effective certain
points of sale are and I will want to learn more
about the brands styling and the customers
they attract. I will want to know where some of
the best points of sale for my brands are and I
will want to know the positioning of the point
of sale. I will finally document my evidence on a
PowerPoint.
Key Findings
• All the colours are vibrant.
• Use interesting features
• Try and target 18 to 35
Mood Board
On this mood board I have taken pictures that show the brand Old spice
for what it is and shows how old spice use their advertising. The pictures
I have got for this mood board allow me to see more in depth of how a
point of sale of theirs would look. I have used images purely from their
website which have allowed me to create a collage of photos which
relate to the old spice brand.
Customer Profiling
Procter & Gamble, the company behind the Old
Spice brand, conducted consumer surveys and
found that the vast majority of male body wash is
actually purchased by women. The marketing
character of old spice offers a stunning dose of
masculine eye-candy to appeal to the female
audience that apparently makes most of the body
wash purchasing decisions, while still also giving
the subtle message to men that if they just used
Old Spice body wash, they too could be as suave
and masculine as Old Spice Man.
This image attracts the male population to
the brand. It offers eye-candy for the men,
making them feel like they need the
fragrance.
This image shows an old spice advert that
is being used to try and show that by using
old spice you instantly become a man and
attract the females.
Old spice has had an extreme makeover changing its customer base from the old aged men to the
younger teenage generation. In 2001 old spice had become a top teen brand. They got involved
with NASCAR racer Tony Stewart this straight away changed the interest of old spice and they
became a modern brand that was very appealing to teenagers. Old spice is now appealing to 18-45
year olds.
The first Old Spice product was intended for
females, introduced in 1937. Old Spice for men
followed in 1938.
Best Customer psychological profile
•Personality: Young athletes, young self conscious men, and confident.
•Importance of Purchase: Minimal
•Perceived Risk: Old Spice has been around for a while and people trust the product.
•Attitudes and Opinions: The attitudes of the customer are of a highly macho nature,
believing that men should be strong, unwavering, and tough and deserve a product that
comes with that same attitude. Anything opposite of the attitudes that standby the fruity
and floral female hygiene products.
•Class Consciousness: whether a man wants to buy Bvlgari because he is of an upper class
and feels that if he were to buy Old Spice it might make him look cheap.
Key Findings
• They aim their product at
women originally.
• Aimed at young athletes.
• A psychological profile.
Brand Profiling
The old spice brand has been constantly updating
since it was introduced. The original logo a clipper
ship was changed to a yacht when proctor and
gamble took over from the shulton company in
1990 and changed the logo in February 1992
1934 - The Shulton Company was founded by William
Schultz.
1937 - Shulton releases Early American Old Spice for
women
1938 – Shulton releases Old Spice for men
1968 - Colfax Laboratories is founded by Shulton
PLC, UK and CMM, begins manufacturing Old Spice
in India.
1969 – Shulton teams with Cosme Matias Menezes
(CMM) for marketing, and distribution of Old Spice
in India.
1970 - Shulton is sold to American Cyanamid.
Shulton becomes their consumer products
division.
1990 – Procter & Gamble purchases Old Spice from
Shulton/American Cyanamid. The other Shulton
products are sold as well. Breck goes to Dial. Pine-
Sol goes to Clorox.
1992 – The clipper ship logo is replaced with a yacht
1993 – Procter & Gamble take over Shulton business
worldwide, ending the marketing and distribution
deal with the Menezes family. CMM continues to
manufacture Old Spice.
1999 – Marico Industries obtains marketing and
distribution rights for Old Spice in India
2001 – On Thursday April 12, 2001, Procter and
Gamble licenses Old Spice to Universal Razor
Industries. URI assumes responsibility for
development and production of Old Spice in the
United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
2002 – Procter & Gamble licenses the ‘Old Spice’
trademark and business to Menezes Cosmetics
Private Ltd (MCPL), formerly CMM, the same group
who introduced Old Spice to India, for 10 years only
in India. This ends P&G’s deal with Marico. (MCPL
now serves India, Africa, and Russia)
2008 – The original Old Spice scent is repackaged as
"Classic Scent". The traditional glass bottles are
replaced with plastic, grey stoppers with red.
Here I have created a time line on the changes that have been
made from 1934 to 2008 on Old spice. This timeline shows the
modernisation that Old spice have taken to try and bring in new
customers on all of their products.
Key Findings
• The masculine change.
• Original product for women.
• Replaced the clipper ship
with a yacht.
Environmental Snapshot
Here I have taken some environmental snapshot pictures in Boots and one of Superdrug I have also taken a few of the internet from different stores worldwide
to compare the differences. The pictures on the right are from an American store that promotes Old spice. This shows that Old spice’s target audience are
based more in America due to the point of sale design. The point of sale on the right hand side shows interactive features that are helping with the promotion
of Old spice. In comparison the pictures on the left have no interactive features and do not have their own display but are displayed with many other products
with Old spice on the bottom shelf out of the way. This tells me that Old spice have not put a lot of effort into the promotion of their product in some shops.
The Old spice products in Boots are surrounded by other products that are related to that type of product. Old spice’s products look like they are being
shadowed by all the other products within the shop. In Boots there are only a few products from Old spice this tells me that Old spice need to improve on their
distribution of products within certain shops.
Superdrug is one of the shops that I will want to place my point of sale in as Superdrug fits the style of my
brand. Superdrug has many fragrance point of sales within their shop which display many different men's
fragrances. I want to place my point of sale in this shop as all the products relate to my brand are of the same
sort of price which makes my brand fit right in. All of the products have the same kind style as Old spice and all
offer the same things as Old spice. In shops like Superdrug and Boots my product and my point of sale would
be ideal for these shops mainly due to pricing.
Key Findings
• Point of sales only in America
for Old spice.
• Only a few products in shops.
• Positioned in the same area as
other deodorants.
First Hand Existing Design Analysis
Aesthetics: The aesthetics of this point of sale unit look great and have been designed very well. These units has
various layers of products that have been designed for men and women the men’s products have been placed on the
top shelves and the women’s products on the lower shelves. This unit has no features that make it different from any
other units. All of the unit along the wall next to Gucci have the same design therefore the same features this
however is a weakness of the point of sale as it make the point of sales look too similar and customers will not see the
difference in brands they will only see difference in price. The diesel and Giorgio Armani point of sale have the exactly
same design features which make them look the same and neither of them will stand out as they look too similar.
Cost: The cost of these products are ranged between £18 - £72.This would be targeted at an age range of 18- 36 year
olds that prefer an expensive deodorant or aftershave. These three point of sales all have the same costing point of
sales, These point of sales feature the same layout and materials making the cost the same.
Customer: The customer for these products are for men and women aged between 18 - 30.Gucci has products that
are of an expensive price and are targeted at the wealthier audience. The Giorgio Armani range have the same kind of
age range as Gucci and these will both be aimed at wealthier people and the more professional male and female. The
diesel range is slightly cheaper however will still be targeted at the same age range as the other two point of sales.
Environment: The environment for this point of sale is next to many other points of sale that are of an expensive price
and are aimed at the wealthier audience. All of the point of sale next to this one have the same layout which displays
men’s fragrances at the top and women’s at the bottom.
Size: The size of this point of sale is at a good size however does not stand out as all of the point of sales are exactly
the same but with different products. Gucci should have made their point of sale more exclusive by making either
larger of smaller to give it exclusivity.
Safety: This point of sale unit is very safe as it has been enclosed in the wall so it prevents the unit collapsing on any
customers. This unit has no sharp edges as all of the edges have been enclosed in the wall. The unit safety features
are the same to all the other point of sales on the wall like this one.
Function: The function of this point of sale is to attract customers to. The point of sale unit offers lighting that will be
more appealing to the customers. The title Gucci is lit up which will be more likely to attract more customers. None of
these point of sales uses any interactive features however they all incorporate testers to the public which is a good
part of these point of sales.
Material: This point of sale is made out of acrylic and would have probably had a vinyl gloss finish to make it look more
expensive and more aesthetically pleasing. The material of all three of these point of sales are probably the same as it
would have saved the company money to make them all out of the same material.
First Hand Existing Design Analysis
Aesthetics: The aesthetics of these points of sale are very modern and stylish and suit house of Fraser's style
very well. The point of sale at the top uses very stylish materials which make it stand out compared to all of
the other point of sales. The materials on the top point of sale make it stand out as no other point of sale
incorporates all the same materials as this one. The point of sale in the centre is also a very exclusive and
different point of sale as no other point of sale uses the same design as this one or the same materials in the
same way that this point of sale uses them. The point of sale located at the bottom is also very stylish and
uses the colours well.it also uses stylish materials that many other point of sales in the shop use making it not
seem as exclusive as the different point of sales.
Cost: The top point of sale that is housing YSL is of an expensive price which ranges from £20 to £70.The point
of sale in the middle which is housing Dolce & Gabbana ranges from £18 to £60.which is a cheap to medium
price. The bottom point of sale which is Giorgio Armani ranges from £30 to £70.
Customer: All of these point of sales target the same audience which is men and women aged between 20
years old and 38 years old. They all have slightly different designs to try and ensure they reel their customer in
better than other points of sales.
Environment: These point of sales are all in house of Fraser department store and are located in the fragrance
section with loads of other point of sales. They all have been positioned in certain areas to ensure they gain
their customers.
Safety: These three point of sales all incorporate the same safety features however they will have some
slightly different requirements which they have to meet to ensure that the point of sale is safe for the public
viewing.
Size: These point of sales are all of a good size for the public viewing and because they are not tall but
medium sized then the public will prefer this size according to my questionnaire.
Function: These point of sales have the same features these are lights. Their is lights that make the title light
up and allow the user to be attracted to the point of sale more.
Material: The two point of sales at the bottom of the page use the same material which is acrylic. The point of
sale at the top of the page is the only different point of sale in the shop that uses glass wood and acrylic this
make s the point of sale stand out much more compared to all the other points of sale that use the same
material.
Aesthetics: All three of these Hugo boss point of sales incorporate the same design except for one as it is a
different Hugo boss style. The Hugo boss Orange uses the colour orange within all of its products and uses the
colour orange to promote the new range that they offer by being different. The other two Hugo boss point of
sale incorporate the usual Hugo boss style however they are different styled point of sales. The Hugo boss one in
the middle offers the women's fragrance at the top and the men's at the bottom. However the other Hugo boss
point of sale has the men's fragrances at the top and the women's products at the bottom.
Cost: The cost of all three point of sale products range between £26 - £56.These products are all of an average to
high price. These point of sales have been designed to make them look more expensive than they actually are.
Customer: The customer of this product would be 18 to 40 year olds. Hugo boss tries to aim their product at the
more professional type of men who want to smell more masculine. These three products all try to attract the
same age range and style of men and women.
Environment: All three of these point of sales are placed in an area where fragrances are the main selling point.
They have all been placed in different areas to try and persuade customers to purchase them by allowing the
customer to keep on seeing the fragrances.
Safety: These three Hugo boss point of sales would all incorporate the same safety features enabling them to be
safe to the public. The safety of these point of sales would all be the same as the manufacture has to ensure that
the features are the same.
Size: The point of sale on the left and the point of sale in the middle are of the same size. This is a good size for a
point of sale as it allows the customer to have to take more interest into the product as they have to bend down
just to try and see some of the products. The point of sale at the bottom of the page is eye level with all
customers looking at it, it also offers all the products to be display very clearly and allows the customers to easily
be able to access the products.
Function: These Hugo boss point of sale units all have the same features and they are lighting in the title and
behind the products shelving. The function of these point of sales are to attract customers. These point of sales
do this quite well as they are positioned in different areas of the fragrance section and allow the customer to be
constantly reminded of the Hugo boss point of sale units.
Material: The three of these units would be made out of the same material. Which consists of acrylic and some
glass. This allows the point of sale to look modern and stylish as well as expensive which attracts more
customers to the point of sale.

After conducting my questionnaire of asking a mixture of 30 people from the public and from
my family and friends seven different questions regarding point of sale units. I have found
some results that I will take into consideration when constructing my point of sale unit.
Results
After asking the question, What size do you like a point of sale to be ?.I have found some results that I
will have to take into consideration. I have found out that the majority of people prefer observing and
using a medium sized point of sale in comparison to any other size. With extra large coming in second
place with 8 people choosing it and large in third with 3 people choosing it and small coming bottom
where only a single person chose it. The Medium sized point of sale won by a massive ten people this
told me that a medium sized point of sale is much preferred by the public. I then queried them about
their answer and asked them why they chose their answer over the others. I found out that the people
who preferred the medium sized point of sales thought they looked better and that they didn’t try too
hard to stand out and end up overshadowing the product on display. The people who chose the extra
large thought that it was better to try and attract as many people as you could to the point of sale even
if it means that the product will become shadowed by the point of sale. As for the few people that
chose large they thought it looks better to be slightly bigger than normal but not too big so that the
product is not shadowed. As for the other person who chose small they just thought that it was better
if the product had more presence compared to the point of sale that was displaying it.
After asking the question What material would you like to see on a point of sale ?.I found some
interesting results that didn’t surprise me as much as I thought it would. I found out that the
majority of people preferred to see Metal on a point of sale unit. This was no surprise to me as
metal is modern and is the latest material that designers are using. In second it was acrylic which
was no surprise at all as loads of manufactures are using it in their products and because of the
shine it can give of it makes it look more expensive. In third glass came this was a surprise as I have
only seen a few glass point of sale unit however the few I have seen are very stylish and modern. In
fourth was wood which I was expecting as wood is very traditional and many point of sale’s have
stopped using this to try and modernise their company. Judging by my results I will look into
making my point of sale out of Metal however due to the prices of it I may have to settle for acrylic.
However going by the public acrylic will still attract people to the point of sale. The people who
chose Metal said that they thought it was stylish and expensive making the product on sale appear
more exclusive and expensive. They also said that by having Metal it can make the product on
display look better than what it is. The people who chose acrylic said that they thought it was
expensive and stylish as they claimed to have seen it on point of sale units from brands such as
Chanel and Burberry. This told me that acrylic may be the way to go due to its cheapness and its
effectiveness. People who chose glass said that it made the product more exclusive and that it
looked far more expensive than any other material as when there is a point of sale constructed
from glass the product is usually enclosed by glass. The few people who chose wood claimed that
it was traditional and would look very good depending on the brand.

Market Research
Old Spice just recently became a "once-again" top-competitor for men's
fragrance, body wash, deodorant, and antiperspirant. When Axe debuted in the
U.S. in 2002 -- their following and target audience were men 18-34 -- and this is
exactly where Old Spice had been failing. Old Spice used to be known as an "old
man product," but with the help of innovative and fresh, young marketers; the
company rose back to life. Old Spice began to target directly with their "the man
your man could smell like" campaign -- using Isaiah Mustafa who helped to
connect to a younger generation. The commercials/videos were humorous and
connected to a younger crowd. The campaign spiked sales for Old Spice once the
video went viral and they were an instant hit -- and with the help of social media
and YouTube, the video of the campaign generated 35+ million views in seven
days
Goal: Continue targeting 18-34 year old men
Target men, in general, 18-60
Increase sales by 30% with all fragrance lines through social media
Cost: creating a new, .30 and .60 second commercial/viral video containing Isaiah Mustafa
continuing "the man your man could smell like campaign"
Competition: Axe has been Old Spices' biggest competitor since they debuted in the US in
2002 -- Old Spice must continue to focus on the younger generation to keep up with sales.
Old Spice has the ability to compete by growing their blog, Twitter, Facebook, and
YouTube pages by connecting with their younger audience.
Also, by connecting directly with consumers that have already used their product, Old
Spice can continue to enhance their social media efforts. Old Spice is already an amazing
and dominating product, now it is just time to get the word out.
This is how Old spice use their advertising and how they go about
advertising
Focus on a 12-month campaign with sponsorships on specific flights and
heaviest flighting during the holiday months (Nov-Dec)
-special package deals with fragrances, body wash, after shave,
deodorant, and antiperspirant
-announce the holiday packages on all major social media sites
(Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and begin sales on Groupon)
-start a Holiday contest for buyers to participate in with the website +
YouTube -- increase the consumer engagement
-continue flighting ads on major sites with video and rich-media ads
-continue to maintain the site and pump-up with the latest and greatest
content and provide buyer with easy point of purchase
Total Cost: $6,000,000 (06/30/2011-06/30/2012)
Measuring Success: Google Ad Words allows campaign monitoring with
their placement performance report: see where your ads appear and
their respective clicks, as well as how many conversion each earned and
its costs
Ten Minute Observation
I have observed all three of these point of sales for ten minutes and have taken note of
the amount of attention that they get from the public and what lets the point of sale
and whether the point of sale lets the product down. I have also judged the point of sale
depending on the product it is displaying.
This point of sale was the first one I looked at
for ten minutes. I have found out that this
point of sale unit did not have a lot of
attention towards it. It only had three people
go up to it in the space of ten minute
however they walked away as soon as they
saw the state the point of sale was in. This
point of sale is intended to be interactive
however the age range that this is aimed at
has abused the point of sale and drawn all
over the point of sale and left it in a mess,
Therefor it is not attracting any more
customers as they are put of by the mess.
This point of sale has been placed at the end
of an isle this allows it to be seen by the
public who are passing by. The point of sale
lets the product down as the product would
be bought by a fair few people however the
point of sale has been vandalised by the age
range for that product. This should be dealt
with by the shop manager and something
should be put in place to stop this happening.
This point of sale was the second one that I
observed for ten minutes. In those ten
minutes I noticed that it had quite a few
people using it straight away when I started
my observation. In the space of ten minutes
it had 12 people use it which averages out to
more that a person a minute. I see this point
of sale as a strong point of sale due to the
strong advertisement everywhere else. This
point of sale is for the national lottery which
most people know about and would use
every week this explains why this point of
sale had this amount of attention. The point
of sale allows the customer to use the plastic
stand on it to fill out their lottery card. This
makes it more efficient for the customer. The
point of sale is at a good position in the shop
allowing customers who are leaving the shop
or entering the shop be able to see the point
of sale before they leave and as they enter.
This point of sale is very effective due to
what it is trying to sell.
This was the third and final point of sale
that I observed for ten minutes. This
point of sale had been placed in eye line
straight when you enter the shop
making it catch your eye straight away.
This point of sale I was surprised at
because it did not have the attention
that I expected it to have. In the space
of the ten minutes only four people
observed it however did not use the
product on display. The point of sale
itself is placed in a great area and also
has the product at the point of sale and
has an interactive feature that the
customer can use. This point of sale
however I think did not live up to the
expectation due to the product on sale.
The point of sale done a good job at
advertising the product however the
public showed no interest in the
product on display.

Further Specification
• I will use a mixture of curved shapes and straight shapes/lines on my point of sale because I think that curved/Straight lines and
shapes look more aesthetically pleasing.
• I will want to make my point of sale out of metal judging by my questionnaire that I conducted, however because of the price of
carbon fibre I will probably have to made my point of sale out of acrylic.
• I will need to make my point of sale interactive so that customers are more likely to buy the product and judging by my ten minute
observation people like being able to interact with the product.
• I will have to want to make my point of sale using a mixture of red white and blue which are the colours of Old Spice.
• Because Old Spice do not have any point of sales in the UK my point of sale will be the first one so I will have to make it stand out
from others.
• I don’t know whether I want to carry on Old Spice’s modernism style as the original design designs of Old Spice where very good.
• Based on my questionnaire I will want to make my point of sale medium sized or extra large as theses where the most popular
choices by the public.
• I will want to place my point of sale somewhere around the front of the shop so that it is in the view of the customers.
• Old spice have used a very masculine way of advertising however I'm not too sure if I want to carry on this masculinity with my point
of sale.
• I will possibly supply customers with freebies and testers to allow them to get a taste of the product.
• I will aim to keep costs medium to low priced so that my point of sale fits in with the pricing of the brand.
Development
Material – Stainless Steel
My concept idea that I am going to
develop will can be made out of
many materials. The main materials
that I am considering are Metal ,
Acrylic , Glass and Wood.
The housing of my concept idea
will need to follow Old spice’s
modern style so it will be beneficial
for me to use either glass , acrylic
or metal.
Stainless Steel is one of the metals that I am considering for the
housing of my concept idea. Stainless Steel maintains it strength
an is corrosion and heat resistant. Stainless steel will allow me to
be able to clean it very easily with any type of modern day
cleaner. The material requires little maintenance unlike some
surfaces. This material also has a great strength to weight ratio.
This metal does however have it disadvantages such as it is
expensive in certain quantities and grades of it. The metal is
difficult to weld due to its fast dissipation off heat.
Material - Acrylic
Acrylic is another one of the materials
that I may be using for my concept
idea. Acrylic is a great product that
can be easily shaped and moulded. It
is water resistant and does not lose its
colour. Acrylic is very lightweight in
comparison to the other products
that I may be using. Acrylic is also
impact resistant and is much more
resistant than glass this is why acrylic
is a good alternative to glass. Acrylic
also comes in many different colour
and many different grades of
transparency.
Acrylic has some major downfalls the main one
being that it is very easily scratched by
materials that are not even that sharp. The
acrylic can start to change colour ever so
slightly when coming into contact with heat or
direct light for prolonged periods. Acrylic is not
easily recycled and is not biodegradable which
causes the product to be harmful to the
environment.
Material - Glass
Development
Glass is another one of the materials that I have been guided to use for
my concept idea. Glass has some great advantages such as it can be
made into different shapes and sizes. The glass can be different colour
and can have different grades or transparency. Glass can be placed in
any type of conditions as it does not oxidise. Glass also does not allow
for water to pass through. Glass however does have its downfalls such
as it is an expensive material it also breaks very easily under pressure
unless the glass is reinforced. Glass also melts under high temperatures
this however will not effect my concept.
Material - Wood
- Solid and hard material
- Disordered and amorphous structure
- Fragile and easily breakable into sharp pieces
- Transparent to visible light
- Inert and biologically inactive material.
- Glass is 100% recyclable and one of the safest packaging materials due to its composition and properties
Wood is another material that may be best suited
for my concept idea I have looked at my
questionnaire and it tells me that wood is the
least favourite material probably because of its
looks and that it lacks the modernism for Old
spice. Wood comes in many different types but all
of the wood have the same advantages and
disadvantages. Some advantages of wood are
that it is lightweight depending on the size of the
wood but for the amount I will need it will be
lightweight it is also cost effective and I will be
able to gain large amounts of wood for a good
price. Wood is a renewable source which makes it
very easy to get access to and it is 100%
recyclable. The disadvantages of wood are its
strength it can split very easily along the grain.
Wood cannot be made into shapes easily and will
require a high level of skill to construct well.
Wood also rots when in contact with water or air
this however can be prevented by use of certain
products. Wood is also quite flammable.
Development
Material – canvas
I can use a canvas material to construct the sails that
are located on the front of my concept idea. Canvas
will be a good material to construct the sails out of
due to it is very easy to cut to shape and it is also very
lightweight and strong. Having canvas as the material
of the sails it will still allow them to move when in
contact with the wind which is exactly what I need for
the sails. Canvas is also very easy to repair in
comparison to other materials that I will consider
using for the sails. Canvas is also waterproof and
windproof due to its tight weave. One of the biggest
advantages of Canvas is its acceptance to chemical
treatments that can make it flame retardant and
increase its water resistance even more. Canvas has
few disadvantages such as it absorbs things very
easily so this makes it bad as it will stain very easily.
Because it is a soft fabric if not treated right it will
tear and rip. The canvas will need to be treated with a
chemical before it can be water resistant to a certain
degree.
Material - Nylon
I could use Nylon for the sails of my
concept as nylon is specially
designed for sails so it would make
sense if I was to use this material it all
depends on the cost of the material
and whether or not it will serve the
purpose of my concept better than
canvas. Nylon has some advantages
such as it is an updated version from
materials like canvas and it is cost
effective which will aid me when
constructing my concept as I want to
keep costs as low as possible. Nylon
has a high tenacity and has a good
strength to weight ratio. Nylon also
has a high resilience and has an
excellent abrasive resistance.
Development
Material - Rubber Material - Metal
Rubber is one of the two
materials that I may construct
the feet out of. The feet are
going to be placed on the
bottom of my concept. Rubber
feet have quality traction which
is ideal for my concept. The
rubber feet also don’t scratch
the floor or whatever surface
they are on. The rubber also
conducts electricity which will
make my concept safer. Rubber
feet are also shock absorbent.
There are no disadvantages of
rubber feet that I have found so
far.
Metal is the other material
that I may use for the feet of
my concept idea. The metal
feet look much more stylish
compared to the rubber feet.
The metal feet are also
stronger and harder than the
rubber feet making them less
likely to need replacing. The
metal feet however will
scratch the surface it is on and
it does not conduct electricity
like rubber. Overall the rubber
feet are much better than the
metal feet in all ways.
Development
Material – Vinyl Letters
To make the letters on the bottom of my concept
idea I will use either vinyl or acrylic. Vinyl is a good
material to use but I think it looks cheap and it is
ineffective as I don’t believe it stands out that
much. However acrylic can have downfalls such as
it will be harder to construct it will cost much
more compared to the vinyl.
Vinyl comes in many different sizes , fonts ,
colours and patterns. You can create long
messages with little money being spent. Vinyl
letters can be placed virtually anywhere and can
be easily positioned. Vinyl is very affordable and
depending on where you get it from then you can
get an 8ft long message for £2o.The letters can be
stuck very easily to virtually any material. The
letters are also designed to be removable so they
can be changed anytime. The only disadvantage of
the vinyl is that because of its cheapness the
quality will not be as good for my concept as it will
make my concept look cheaper.
Acrylic lettering would also be
good for my concept idea as it
looks more expensive. Acrylic
lettering can be custom painted
which is good as I could make
them fit in more with my design.
Acrylic letters are durable and
practical. The acrylic can be used
as a better alternative to metal
lettering which costs more.
Acrylic lettering is much more
stylish than vinyl and will
hopefully make my design look
much better compared to the
vinyl. Acrylic letters however will
cost me more to get and will
have to be laser cut which will
require more time.
Material - Acrylic Letters
Manufacture – Acrylic lettering
To make the acrylic lettering
for my concept design I will
first need to design what I
need the letters to say. I will
use Tech Soft for this. Tech soft
will allow me to construct the
letters to the exact shape and
size that I want. Once I have
done this I will need to send my
work to the laser cutter where
it will be cut out.
The acrylic lettering will not
take that long to cut out as I
only have 8 letters that will
require cutting. These letters
will be fairly small as well.
Construction – Acrylic letters
After I have constructed my acrylic letters I will need to place
them onto my design. To do this I will need to use either hot
glue or araldite.
Hot glue is very easy to use and can be applied very easily to
my design. The hot glue dries clear with little mess it would
be good for the application of the acrylic letters. Araldite is
also a great chemical that I could apply to the letters so that
their would be a tight bond to the letters. Araldite also dries
clear and is relatively easy to apply.
Development
Manufacture - Sails
If I decide to use nylon for the sails on my
design then I will need to use a craft knife and
will need to cut the nylon very quickly to avoid
rough edges and a messy end product. I will
have to mark out where I want to cut the nylon
and then I will need to use a craft knife to cut
along the line that I made. When I use the craft
knife I will have to ensure that I have a couple
of spare blades as the nylon may force the
blades to break.
If I decide to use canvas for the sails then I will
need to use elongated scissors to cut it. First I
will need to mark out on the material the size
and shape I require and then I just need to
simply cut it. Canvas will make it much easier
for me to make the sails out of as it does not
require a lot of skill just a steady hand to follow
the markings. The canvas will gain a clean cut
with the scissors and it will not matter if I end
up ruining the first piece as canvas is relatively
cheap in comparison to nylon.
It will be in my best interest to use canvas due
to its easy cutting and that it is inexpensive
compared to the nylon.
Construction - Sails
To attach the sails to my design I will need
to use either a stapler or I will need to drill
holes in the wood and in the canvas. To
attach the canvas to the wood I will need to
make sure that I first have the material cut
to the right shape and size. I will then need
to staple the canvas to different places on
my design. The stapler will be very easy to
use and will be cost effective and will not
take much time at all. However if I decide
to use a drill to place holes in the material
and my design I will need to ensure that
they are in the perfect place and I will need
to ensure that I have the right sized drill bit.
After I drill the holes in both the wood and
the canvas then I will need to get some
small screws and place them through the
hole of the canvas and then through the
holes in the wood and then screw them in
with the screwdriver or the drill.
Aesthetics
On my design I have decided to place a fan at one end so that
the canvas material will blow and move which will increase the
interactivity of my design. This feature will make it more
attractive to the public and will make my design much better. I
have decided to do this as my design was lacking interactivity.
With the fan in my design it will blow the canvas which will act
like the sails which will refer back to old spice and give it a
better feel. The canvas will have the old spice fragrance on it
so that when the fan is on the scent will be pushed of the
canvas and spread around the area.
This is what the sails will look like.I will place the fan
here as there is
space for the fan
to sit.
With the fan being
here it is in a
perfect position to
blow the sails and
give of the old
spice scent.
These are
some fan ideas
that I could use
in my design.
Manufacture - Housing
To make the housing of my design I will
use pine. First of all I will need to mark
the piece of wood using a pencil and
ruler. After I have marked out the pine I
will need the use the band saw to cut it
out with. After I have cut the wood I will
need to ensure that the wood is smooth
to do this is will use the belt sander.
I will need to use Tech soft to design the
curved piece of acrylic I will then need to
send it to the laser cutter to get cut out.
I will have to make 6 pieces of wood
and one piece of acrylic to make the
housing.
Here I have pointed out the six pieces
of wood and one piece of acrylic that I
will need to make the housing.
Construction - Housing
To put these six pieces of wood and one
piece of acrylic together I will use a mixture
of joints and adhesives.
I will use the butt joint to join the bottom
and side pieces of wood together. I will
then use the mitre joint to join the other
two side pieces of wood together. I will
finally use araldite to joint the curved bit of
acrylic to the wood. Once I have attached
the wood and the acrylic then my housing is
finally complete and is then ready to be
attached to the base.
Construction - Base
Manufacture - Base
To manufacture the base of my design I can either use
four pieces of wood or a single solid piece of wood. If I
use four pieces of wood it will allow me to make a more
complex base and will also allow me to change to very
easily and will also allow me to not waste any material.
To make the four pieces of wood I will first need to get
a large piece of oak wood I will then need to use the
band saw to carefully cut out the shapes that I need to
make the base. To do this I will first need to mark out
on the piece of wood the dimensions of the base and
then I will cut it out with the band saw.
Once I have used the band saw to cut the wood out I
will then use the belt sander to smooth the edges
down.
To put the four pieces of wood together I
can either use an adhesive or I can use a
joint that will support itself.
I will connect the four pieces of wood using
a dovetail joint.
The dovetail joint will be ideal for what I
need it for as it will make my design look
very neat and tidy.
1. Square the ends of the wood to be dovetailed.
2. Set the sliding bevel to a suitable pitch of between 1 in 6 for heavy work and
1 in 8 for smaller and more detailed work. Avoid sharp angles as the points
of tails break easily.
3. Scribe the tails on the end and face of the wood and mark the “waste”
pieces.
4. Clamp the wood in a vice and cut on the waste side with a tenon saw.
5. Lay the two pieces over each other and transfer the markings through the
cuts with a tenon saw.
6. Remove the waste between tails and pins with a chisel
To construct the dovetail joint I will need to :
This selected area is the base.
Here I have spoken about how I would use wood
to manufacture my base however when making
my design I chose to use acrylic purely because of
its aesthetics it proved to be easier to work with
and came in a variety of colours unlike wood. The
acrylic also would not need and type of finish such
as varnish as wood would need a finish such as
this.
Specification Checkpoint
I have so far achieved this
specification as my design has
successfully used a mixture of
curved and straight lines as well as
shapes.
• I will use a mixture of curved
shapes and straight shapes/lines on
my point of sale because I think
that curved/Straight lines and
shapes look more aesthetically
pleasing. • I will want to make my point of sale out of
metal judging by my questionnaire that I
conducted, I also could use carbon fibre
however because of the price of carbon fibre
I will not be using this. I will probably have to
make my point of sale out of acrylic.
I have not decided to make my design out of
either of these materials as metal I think will not
suit my brand and carbon fibre will cost quite a
lot of money for the amount that I want. Acrylic
will also not suit my design I believe that wood
will suit my design the best so I have decided to
use wood for the majority of my design.
• I will need to make my point of
sale interactive so that
customers are more likely to
buy the product and judging by
my ten minute observation
people like being able to
interact with the product.
I have made my design slightly
interactive as the customer can
press a button that will turn on a
fan which will make the fragrance
on the sails spread around the area.
• I will have to want to make my
point of sale using a mixture of
red white and blue which are
the colours of Old Spice.
So far I have not mentioned that I will
use red white and blue however I
constructed a model using Google
sketch and I have used them three
colours in it.
• Because Old Spice do not have any point of
sales in the UK my point of sale will be the
first one so I will have to make it stand out
from others.
I have kind of made my design stand out
as it is using Old Spice’s logo which is
unusual which will hopefully make it stand
out.
• I don’t know whether I want to
carry on Old Spice’s modernism
style as the original design
designs of Old Spice where very
good.
I have continued to use old
spice’s modernism style by using
their logo as part of my design.
• Based on my questionnaire I will want to
make my point of sale medium sized or
extra large as theses where the most
popular choices by the public.
So far I have not mentioned the size
that I will make my design, however I
will decide to make my design
medium sized.
• I will aim to keep costs medium to low priced so
that my point of sale fits in with the pricing of
the brand.
I have said that I would use wood this will
help me keep costs low and will make my
design fit in better with the companies style.
• I will want to place my point of sale
somewhere around the front of the shop
so that it is in the view of the customers.
So far I have not mentioned where I will
place my design within a shop.
• Old spice have used a very
masculine way of advertising
however I'm not too sure if I want
to carry on this masculinity with
my point of sale.
• I will possibly supply customers
with freebies and testers to allow
them to get a taste of the product.
I am not too sure how I will carry on Old
Spice’s masculinity so far I have not met
this specification.
I have not mentioned freebies as such at
the moment but I have used the idea of a
fan blowing the fragrance of the sails
around the shop.
Aesthetics
On my design I can add a hole behind the sails so that I could place the
old spice fragrance behind them and them make them squirt the
fragrance once the fan is turned on. This will probably have to be done by
using a motor that triggers the fan to turn on as well as the fragrance to
squirt. I will need to cut a hole inside my design to do this I will need to
use a drill with a circular drill bit and I will then need to use the hegner
saw. To do this using the hegner saw I will need to take the saw’s blade
of and place it inside the hole that I just drilled out. I am not too sure how
big I will need to make the hole I presume that it will not be too large and
would be rather small.
This is how my design
will look after I have
drilled the hole in the
back after I have
created the hole that
will house a bottle of
the fragrance.
This is the hole that I
will drill out.
Usability
I will design my point of sale in way in which it will have
the ability to be mounted onto a table this will be of an
average height to the average Male/Female.
I will make my point of sale use rubber feet which I
mentioned earlier on in development which will aid in
the security of my point of sale when on a table.
Having my point of sale at this height will make it more
ergonomic for the user.
This is the style of table that I will
use to mount my design on.
This drawing that I have made shows the
average height of a person and where my
point of sale will be positioned.
Usability
I will make the button seen in this picture out
of rubber as it will be safer. By having rubber
for the button I will not cause any safety
issues to rise compared to a material such as
wood or metal. If I used metal the edges
would be far harder to make smooth to
prevent scratching. By having rubber it will be
relatively soft and will not have any sharp
edges.
Components
The wiring for my point of sale will
need to go inside the design. I will
make ridges that the wiring inside
will sit on I will have to use a staple
gun as well to hold the wires in
place.
Here are the ridges
that I would put in
place on my design to
ensure that the wires
can go around to the
designated point.
I would need to use a staple
gun which would ensure the
wires stay In the correct
places.
Components
On my design I will place L.E.D lights
around the letters so that the lettering
will attract the customers more and will
look more aesthetically pleasing.
The lights that will be placed around
the letters will be coloured blue and red
this links with Old Spice and will make
my design look more themed to Old
Spice.
The L.E.D’s will be placed around these
letters and will have to be positioned
carefully around all of the letters. I will
have half of the letters red and half of
them blue.
Manufacturer
Usability
I will need to make my design safer for the use of the public I will
need to do this by making the sharp edges on my design either
rounded or I will have to put a rubber guard around them. If I
decide to round the edges off I will need to use the belt sander of
the file and will need to ensure that the edges are not sharp in
any way. If I decide to use rubber guards around the edges then I
will probably be able to buy them off the internet.
These are some of the guards that I may be able to use
on my design this will hopefully ensure protection.
This is my other option which is the belt sander or
file this will also enable me to make the edges
smoother.
The red rings
represent the
main corners
that I will
need to
cover or
adapt.
To make the piece of rubber I can either buy it in
from the internet or produce it myself. If I was to
create the piece of rubber myself it would be
much hassle for such a small component this is
why I will choose to buy it in from the internet.
I have said that I will use rubber corner edges so
that I can protect my design. I decided not to use
this as they were not aesthetically pleasing. The
rubber edges however will ensure that no injury’s
happen, I did ensure that I used acrylic which I filed
down so that they are not sharp.
This button will open the door to the right
and will also trigger the fragrance behind the
sails to activate and spray the fragrance onto
the sails while this is happening the fan will be
turned on as well.
Usability
Construction
This button will have to be wired up from the
inside and the wires will run through the
design. I will support the wires how I have
shown in this picture using ridges that will
hold the wire and then I will use a staple gun
to ensure that the wires do not move.
The door and the little slit in my design
will be wired up to the button which will
activate them upon interaction with the
button.
To make the button stable I will have to
craft a gap in the material below which will
house the button. I will then need to make
sure that the button stays in the gap. To do
this I will use araldite to glue the sides of
the button to the sides of the gap.
The button will still easily be able to be pushed down by
the user as their will be nothing stopping it. I will ensure
that the button works before I glue it to the gap made.
I have said that I will use a indent in the
material so that the button becomes stable I
could however use screws either side of the
button to ensure stability and would allow the
button to be pressed many times without
losing its positioning.
Manufacture
ConstructionTo manufacture the rubber feet I can go down
two paths one being me making the rubber feet
and the second me ordering the feet online. If I
get the rubber feet online then It will allow me to
have more time for other parts of my design. If I
decide to make the feet myself It will take me a
while as producing the rubber feet will be very
tricky and time consuming. This is why I have
decided to get the feet from the internet.
To attach the rubber feet onto my design I can
either use the screw on rubber feet which I will
need to drill a hole into my design so that the
rubber feet can screw into it. The other option is
that I get rubber feet that I will be able to attach
on with an adhesive. If I attach the feet with an
adhesive I will use araldite.
I will need to make holes in
the bottom of my design if I
use the screw in rubber feet. I
will make the holes in the
bottom of my design using a
drill.
Araldite will be the best glue that I can use for gluing
rubber feet onto the bottom of my design. This is
because it is the strongest resin that I can use.
To attach the rubber feet on my design I has
said that I will use araldite, instead I could
have used screws which would secure the
feet more and would make the design more
stable and less prone to fall over.
Manufacture
ConstructionTo make the door I will first need to get
a piece of wood that is at least an inch
thick. I then need to draw out the size
of the door on the piece of wood and
then using a hegner saw I will cut the
markings out. I will then need to make
sure that I use the belt sander to
smooth all of the edges on the wood.
I will need to purchase two hinges. The
hinges will be placed at the top and
bottom of the door. I will also need to
create a few small holes on the door
and on my design so that the hinge can
be screwed in.
I will use the hinges to attach the
door to my design. I will need some
small screws that will go through
the door and the hinge. The screws
will go through the small hole that I
made on my design.
Here I have shown a Google
sketch up model that is showing
an example of how my door on
my design would look.
I have said that I will use screws to secure
the door however they could potentially
crack the acrylic due to its thickness, I
instead used epoxy resin to secure the
hinge to the frame and to the door. The
epoxy resin proved to be a bit messy but
prevented me cracking my door using
screws.
Usability
The fan that is in my design will work by being activated
by the button on the front of my design. The fan will be
battery powered. It will be position at the side of my
design and will automatically come on when the button
is turned on. This will also trigger the fragrance to spray
onto the sails and the fan will fan the scent around the
area.
The button on the front of my
design will be wired up to a circuit
board in the centre of my design.
The circuit board will also be
connected to the fan and the
fragrance bottle mechanism.
The circuit board will
have to be positioned
in the centre of my
design and will have
to be supported by
small brackets. It will
be positioned on the
back wall of my
design.
Components
I will need to use a circuit board in my design it
will be placed inside my design. I can use
resistors so that I can allow a certain voltage
to flow through to the other components. The
circuit board will be connected to the fan and
the button. The circuit board will be powered
by a battery that will also be connected.
Battery
Fan
Button
The circuit board is the only way that I will
be able to connect all three things to it and
still be able to easily manage the other
components. The Fan , Button and Battery.
The circuit board will have to be positioned
in the middle of the inside of my design and
the wires will be able to easily run above
and below it.
This is where the
circuit board and
wires will be
positioned inside
my design.
Components
Components
The fan on my design will be
positioned at the side of the it. I will
have to make a indent in the design
so that the fan can sit in and will be
more stable. To safely secure my fan
I will have to use a hot glue gun this
will ensure that it stays in position
and does not move.
The fan will have to be soldered to
the circuit board to ensure that it
turns on when the button is pressed.
The fan will be battery powered and
will probably take either AA batteries
or AAA batteries.
The battery on my design will have to be
positioned inside the housing and will
power the circuit board and will power the
fan. The batteries will have to be positioned
close to the circuit board as it will be easier.
Inside the housing the battery will have to
be placed on the side of the wall and will
need a case to ensure it is stable.
I will have to make sure that the battery is
secure and I will have to use a hot glue gun
to secure the case to the inside and I will
also use small screws to ensure that the
case is secure and will not fall when in
transport.
This is the indent that will secure
the fan and will also have a small
hole inside the indent so that the
wires can go through.
I have said that I will use batteries in my design I
could also use the mains as this will allow me to have
higher wattage and would be more efficient.
However by using the mains supply it will restrict the
positioning of my design compared to batteries
where I can place my design freely around.
Manufacture
Construction
Material
I will use acrylic panels that
will be placed on top of the
wood that is the housing of
my design.
This is what the acrylic
panels will look like on my
final design. Acrylic will
probably be the best and
easiest material for my
design as it is easy to use
and is easy to shape.
To apply the acrylic to the
wood I will use epoxy
resin. Once the glue has
been applied to the
wooden surface. I will
then apply each pane
individually. The epoxy
resin will have to be
applied before I apply any
of the sails.
To manufacture these acrylic
panes I will use the laser cutter.
This will enable me to cut all
the pieces that I require with
ease and will be the most
efficient way of producing the
panes to size.
Acrylic is one of the easiest materials to
work with in terms of the production of
my design. I have looked at other
materials such as wood and various
metals like aluminium. I have concluded
that acrylic is the best for my design
based on these various tests that I have
taken.

Construction
To manufacture the slot in the side of my
design that will hold and support the fan. I
Will have to use the laser cutter so that
there is a hole in the acrylic I will then use
some small pieces of acrylic that I can cut
using the band saw which will be positioned
underneath the hole that has been made I
will then position a small piece of wood with
a small hole which the wires of the fan will
go through. The hole will have to be big
enough so that the wires can securely go
through.
I will use epoxy resin to secure the pieces of
acrylic to each other and the small piece of
wood to them. The epoxy resin will be able to
hold the pieces of wood as well as the acrylic. I
will have to ensure that I keep all of the pieces
carefully aligned to ensure that the wires will be
able to easily go through.
I have said that I will use liquid solvent
cement to secure the pieces of acrylic
together. This is the best glue that I could
use for this particular job however I could
also use another glue such as epoxy
resin.
Solvent cement is much easier to work
with and provides very little mess
whereas epoxy resin can create a mess
easily and can be more difficult to use.
Components
Components
The button on my design which is
positioned on the front of it will be
linked to a circuit board. The
button will have wires that go into
the housing and will go up the
inside of the wall and will then
connect to the circuit board.
The button will be already
constructed and will just have to
be slotted into a hole in the base.
The hinges on my design will be connecting to the
base and to the door to ensure that the door opens
well. The door will be wide enough so that you can
place and take out an old spice can. i will also need
to make sure that the hinges are evenly placed on
the door. The handle for the door will need to be of
a reasonable size so that staff can open it when
they need to replace the can.
Manufacture
ConstructionOn the front of my design where I
have the Old spice lettering I will have
L.E.D’s positioned around them. I will
need to make the L.E.D’s go around
certain letters so that the point of
sale stands out more. I will need to
make small areas for the L.E.D’s so
that they can be secure. I will need to
make sure that all of the L.E.D’s can
link together and all run off the same
power being a battery inside of my
design. To make the small holes for
the LE.D’s to sit and be secure I will
need to use a small drill and drill holes
in the required place that I want.
To ensure that the L.E.D’s are securely in
position I may need to use epoxy resin
or some PVA glue to secure the edges
of the L.E.D’s. The L.E.D’s will already be
quite secure as their will be holes that
they can fit into. These holes will
hopefully secure them enough so that I
may not even need to use any type of
glue or resin.
Here I have said that I will use
L.E.D lights on my design, they are
brighter and more efficient in
comparison to normal bulbs. The
normal bulbs are considerably
worse in every way. L.E.D’s are
much safer than normal bulbs as
they emit less wattage but more
power.
Manufacture
ConstructionTo manufacture the hole that I
will need to secure the button
for my design, I may be able to
use Techsoft which will enable
me to laser cut the hole in the
base of my design. This will save
me using different machinery to
manufacture a time consuming
part of my design. The hole in
the design will easily be able to
hold the button in place but I
may still need to use some glue
so that it is 100% secure.
Once I have made this hole I will then
need to ensure that I use small edges
that will hold the button in place and
that will still enable me to get the
wires of the button through the hole.
To construct the small edges I will
just use small pieces of wood and
then use PVA glue to stick the edges
to the base so that the button stays
in position and so that the wires can
get through and also to ensure that
the wires are slightly tight and not
loosely hanging.
I have said that I will use PVA to glue the pieces
of wood together this glue is the best for this
application and suits it much better than other
glue’s. The PVA gets absorbed by the wood and
creates long strains into the woods grain and
holds the pieces of wood together. This type of
glue is far more suitable than a glue such as
araldite.

wood so that I can get the colours that I
want.
• I will want to place my point of sale
somewhere around the front of the shop
so that it is in the view of the customers.
I have shown exactly where my design will
be positioned in a shop and have shown
how it will look.
• Old spice have used a very
masculine way of advertising
however I'm not too sure if I want
to carry on this masculinity with
my point of sale.
• I will possibly supply customers
with freebies and testers to allow
them to get a taste of the product.
I have not met this specification by
showing masculinity instead I have just
tried to use the image that old spice try to
create by being out at sea and given the
customer this feeling.
I have not mentioned any freebies or
testers that the customer can physically
walk away with. I have however made it
so that the fragrance will be sprayed
around an area when the customer
interacts with the button.

Plan for manufacture
1. Made the base from white acrylic using finger joints to connect the box together.
2. I then attached the wooden body to the base.
3. I then attached the red and blue acrylic panels to the back and front.
4. I then attached the two pieces of blue acrylic to the right hand side of my design.
5. I have then attached the piece of flexible red acrylic to the left of my design.
6. I then created a hole in this piece of red acrylic using a drill so that the fan can sit in it.
7. I then used a chisel to chisel out a dip in the hole so that the fan is more stable.
8. I then created holes in the front of my design and used the pop rivet gun to secure the sails to
the front.
9. I finally applied my vinyl letters to my acrylic base.

  • 1.
  • 2. Point Of Sale Units The height of this unit makes it very clear and easy to see as this unit is not in a shop it needs to stand out and it does this very well. This unit has been placed in the centre of The Glades this makes it very hard to miss. This unit will be the most likely to attract customers due to the clever positioning. The design of this unit is very simple yet effective it has been designed using glass to allow the customers easy viewing of the product. Overall this unit is good as its height makes it easily visible and the positioning allows it to gain more attention than another unit. This product has been placed at the front of the shop where any passers by or customers of the shop can view the product easily and can test the product if needed. The design has been catered to suit the style of the shop. It includes simplistic colours and uses a simple font to display the offer. The height of this product is of an average height and customers will not need to stretch down to use the product. Overall the unit stands out quite a lot and will attract customers due to the bright bold writing on the front. Its positioning is at the front allowing customers to see it before entering the shop. The height of this unit is ideal for the viewing of the product and allows the customers to have a clear view of everything on the unit. The colour scheme of this unit it all brown due to the wood. It has used this as the shops products are all based around natural products. This unit has been placed in the centre of the shop suggesting the products are there main selling points. The have used the simplicity of the wood to their advantage. Overall this unit is very good due to the positioning, height and simplicity within the design. The height of this is of an average height and will allow any customer to view the item on sale. The positioning of this unit allows anyone entering the shop have to pass it. The unit has been designed using very simple colours and only includes black and white. Overall this product uses the colour and positioning to its advantage. Due to the shop’s colour the unit fits in great, however this unit is not the best as the simplicity does let it down slightly. This unit uses white and pink which fits in perfectly with the interior of the shop. This unit’s design is good for displaying the product as it uses a simplistic style. This unit has been placed in the window of the shop making it very easy for passers by. This unit is a great height for viewing and will allow the public to easily view the product on display. Overall this unit is good at displaying the product but bad at puling customers in to buy the product. This is a very simple design that incorporates simplistic colours and allows the customer to not be drawn away by bright colour. The height of this unit is of an average height and will attract customers as it is almost eye level. This point of sale unit has been placed at a shop window allowing passers by to view it. Overall I think this product is an average sale unit due to the dull colours and lack of innovation. This unit has been placed in the centre of the shop allowing all passers by to notice it. This unit will be more likely to attract customers compared to others just because of the positioning of the unit. This point of sale is at a great height as it makes it visible to any one passing by. The colour scheme of this unit is good as it incorporates bright colours this will attract more people especially kids. The design of this unit is great as it is fun and different because of this design kids will be more attracted to it. This unit incorporates things that no other unit usually has.
  • 3. This point of sale unit has been placed at the front of the shop. It has been placed out of the way which lose customers. This unit is quite tall this ensures it is noticed by members of the public. This unit needs the height otherwise it will not attract the attention of the public. The unit has been designed specifically to cater for the lottery cards, This unit features a space in which you can write on. Overall this unit has great height and design however its positioning Is not the best as it limits the amount of customers seeing it. This unit clearly displays the product on sale, It allows the customer to see the offer and product. It has interactive features that allow users to use the product this will reel the customer in and they will be more likely to buy. The height of this unit is good as it is big enough to attract customers. This point of sale unit has been placed towards the front of the shop and as soon as you walk in the shop it is straight in your line of view which will draw you in. Overall this unit is good at displaying the product and allows the customer to play around with the product that they may be buying. This unit is great as it uses interactive features which allow anyone to test the product before they buy it . This allows people to have a mess around with the product on sale. This unit has a great colour scheme that is fun and inventive which allows many more customers to be attracted to it. The height of this product is actually really good as the pad and pen part of the stand is at a height for there target audience allowing them to have an advantage over other units that are aimed at this range. Overall this product uses great colours and great height advantage which allows this unit to be a great point of sale. The positioning of the product is also great as it has been placed down an isle relevant to the product. This unit has great height making it visible from many places in the shop. This unit is perfect height for the type of unit it is. The colour scheme of this product is great as it uses bright colours all around and will easily attract customers purely based on the bright appealing colours. This unit has been placed in an excellent location next to the escalators this allows the unit to attract anyone wanting to go up the escalators as they will have to pass the unit before. Overall this unit has great positioning and has been manufactured at an excellent height. This unit has a great theme that will allow it to attract many people who are interested in the Olympics. It incorporates the Olympic colours which help it look official .The height of this product is ok as it is not too small or too high however this means it will not attract a lot of attention like other units. This unit has bad positioning as it has not been placed in an area of the shop where its going to reach its potential. It has been placed at the start of an isle which makes it good in some respect however its not in an isle where it will be recognized properly. Overall this product has great colours however due to its poor positioning the unit has been let down and will not get the praise it need This product has an amazing height advantage allowing the unit to clearly stand out due to its height it is more likely to gain a lot more attention. This unit has got perfect positioning as it has a whole area dedicated to a single product and accessories. The unit has been placed next to the top of an escalator allowing anyone exiting the floor has to go past the huge display. This unit has a great colour that is simple yet effective it uses two colours which allow it to stand out while still looking professional. Overall this unit is great at attracting all customers and is at great height advantage making it dominant over other units.
  • 4. Old spice have used very clever marketing tools to ensure they get the customer base that they need, they have clearly started trying to target a fairly young age which probably ranges from 24 – 55.They have also started trying to target other ethnic groups they have done this so that they can target more than just one target group. I think old spice have started putting men on their branding thinking that the women are going to buy it for someone male who they know. Hackett have started to target the older gentlemen this clearly shows in their clothing range however due to their lack of fragrances it is hard to tell whether they are trying to the same older gentlemen as shown in their clothing. They have a clothing range for children this suggests that they may have fragrances for children aged 16+ and fragrances for the older gentlemen 26+.
  • 5. Fish have a very strange branding technique as they try to target stylists who are in their own business using the products and they have also created products meant for people age d 18+.Fish has a confusing brand as many of their products and their main salon is based around blue, They have then produced products with red packaging and red bottles which drifts away from their actual brand. Mr.Natty have tried and succeeded when trying to target an audience they have made it clear that they are starting to target the old gentlemen aged 35+.The have produced products that only an older gentlemen would use. They have a very straight forward marketing technique using plain and simple colours and using the old fashioned wood making the brand look very stylish.
  • 6. Lynx have a target audience of 13 to 18 year olds. Their brand is considered as a cheap fragrance that is just used for a smell. The brand is too cheap for anyone above the age of 18 to want it as it lasts 5 minutes and does not serve a specific purpose like antiperspirant. L’Oreal men expert serves a purpose to men aged 30+ they have based all their products around men's treatment and solutions to men’s problems. Their two man products are antiperspirant and hair growth cream.
  • 7. About Company Old spice is a n American male grooming brand that is manufactured by Procter and Gamble. They acquired the brand from the Shulton company in 1990.The first old spice product was intended for women this was first introduced in 1937 they then produced a product for men shortly after in 1938.Old spice dominated in the sale of men’s shaving soap and aftershave lotion. Sail ships are old spice’s trade mark. In the year 2000 they introduced many more products including deodorants, body washes and body sprays. Price Old spice have a middle ranged price of deodorant in comparison the cheaper deodorant .Their retail price of cheapest deodorant starts at £8 and can go up to £16.They have loads of different types of aftershave which range from £18 to £40.This is a fairly reasonable price and would allow a lot more people to afford a aftershave like this. They have some very cheap products like antiperspirant that can start at £3 and range up to £6 this is very cheap and would appeal to many people. Why I chose this company I have chosen old spice as I believe that there style is new and sleek and attracts a lot more people than they used to. They have started to attract different culture’s and they have done this by introducing a new modernised version of there what was seen to be old brand. They have introduced a more stylish product that appeals to me a lot more than any of the other brand’s. Customers Old spice has had an extreme makeover changing its customer base from the old aged men to the younger teenage generation. In 2001 old spice had become a top teen brand. They got involved with NASCAR racer Tony Stewart this straight away changed the interest of old spice and they became a modern brand that was very appealing to teenagers. Old spice is now appealing to 18-45 year olds. Reasons behind modernisation The deodorant business grew steadily, but P&G realized it wasn't drawing in men 25 to 45, who still remembered Old Spice as a old brand which was for the older men. So P&G decided to skip a generation and aim the brand at first-time deodorant users. To reach this younger group, in 1999 P&G started handing out samples of High Endurance to fifth-grade health classes, covering 90% of the nation's schools, as well as handing out "scratch-and- sniff" book covers to junior highs. This allowed them to gain the younger population in there brand. Old spice knew by targeting the younger generation they would make much more money.
  • 8. Situation I have noticed that Old Spice have trouble getting the word out about their brand. I think that Old Spice should start placing their products in more shops and start to but their advertisements on TV.I also think they need to produce a wider range of products that need to be placed within more shops. Brief Design a new point of sale for a male grooming company. The unit must display at least 1 product from their range and must clearly identify the brand. • 9. LINKS FX Logical You need the Brand name clearly displayed so that any passers by will be able to see straight away which brand is advertising. Without the brand being clearly displayed people may mistake your product for another. It is essential that you can see the product clearly this is mainly because people may be confused if the product is not clearly displayed. Sometimes shops have point of sale units in corners which sometimes hide the product from potential customers causing the brand to lose out. Many people like to be able to See the price clearly on the display this is so that they know how much it will cost them and is it worth paying the price for that product. If the point of sale is Positioned in eye line it allows all the customers very likely to notice the point of sale if that means they interact with it or not. The point of sale is very effective in such a position as the customer will be drawn straight to the point of display. The point of sale is great if positioned Near a till this is good as many people wait in queues, while they are waiting in this queue the point of sales that are in front of the till will attract them to it as they have nothing better to do while in the queue. If the point of sale is brightly coloured it is more likely to attract customers as it is eye catching. This will help with sales as it attracts people to the product. Interactivity is great in a point of sale as the customers will start playing with the product and they will then know whether they like the product or not. It offers fun to the customers before purchase. Cluster free area is a essential as with a cluster free area the product will easily be visible and no confusion will take place while looking at the product. Illogical If a product has the Same packaging it starts to become confusing for the customer and they then will need assistance from the employees of that shop and by that time many customers will be fed up and will possibly leave the shop. If there is a point of sale the product should not be the same size as it, This may put customers off as they may see the product as insignificant also the point of sale should not be too much bigger than the product as this can cause a problem as many people will see the display as showering the product and will start to distract people from the product. If a point of sale has interactive features then this is good however if it is Too interactive then customers say the flaws of the product and may not buy it. It will also give the customer time to see whether the product suits there needs. Trials of the product can be fatal and make people not purchase the product. Perfume is a great example as they supply card to spray the product on to however the card is not human skin so the product will not smell how its supposed to. Need The ultimate things that are needed for a good point of sale and good sales of the product are: The product is clearly displayed so that that the customer can see what they are buying. The point of sale needs to attract the attention of the customers if that means using bright colours or smell or sound. The point of sale needs to be safe to all of the public to ensure no one gets hurt on the brands product. The product has to have security tags on it to ensure the product is not stolen depending on the price of the product. The point of sale needs to be able to stand out compared to other point of sales. Keep The point of sale needs to keep the same customer base so that the target audience is still interested. The point of sale still needs to keep only one individual product on the display. The same traditional colours have to be kept as customers may get confused if changed. The same masculinity of the brand need to be kept due to the customer base. I will keep the brands logo and name still on the front of the point of sale to ensure the customer is not confused at what brand they are looking at. I will ensure the same target group will be interested in the product as well as new customers. Scrap I will scrap some of the design ideas of the company to ensure they keep the same customer base while luring in other customers. I will get rid of some of the boring packaging supplied by company to try and bring a more sophisticated side to the brand. I will scrap the material of cardboard as it is boring and a poor material when trying to make your product look expensive. I would also scrap the idea that if a product is cheaper it has less attention compared to the more expensive products. Form VS Function I will use materials that make the product look stylish expensive and sleek. I will not be in favour of cheap materials such as cardboard I will focus on materials like glass and metal. The glass can be used to enclose the product making it look very stylish and exclusive. I will use interactive features making the point of sale unit stand out from others. I will try to make my point of sale unit in the middle allowing it to look stylish and still be able to work to a high standard. X Factor I will make my stand different from other point of sale units as I will use lighting that will light up the unit and the area around it. This is not featured on any point of sale unit. I will also use an interactive screen making my unit look expensive any worth while. By doing this I should be able to attract more customers to my chosen brand .
  • 10. Initial Specification Aesthetics The aesthetics of my point of sale will be based on the brand I will do this by making the point of sale incorporate the same colours. I will also use shapes that are featured frequently through the old spice design. I will also use the same masculine style that old spice use. I will use the products style to try and make my point of sale fit the brand. Cost I will base the cost of my point of sale unit on the cost of my brand as it will not fit in if the sale is much more expensive than the product. I will be carful as I cannot make the manufacturing cost of the point of sale too expensive due to the fact the products are not too expensive. I also have to make sure the cost of recycling the point of sale is not too expensive. Customer I will have to design the point of sale to suit what the customer likes and how they expect the product to be display. I will have to make sure that I make the point of sale to what the customer is actually looking for. I will need to ensure the point of sale is what the customer expects and is not completely different to what they know and love. Environment The environment of my point of sale will be inside or outside the shop I will be most likely to have my point of sale inside the shop and have the point of sale positioned in the centre of the shop making more customers likely to notice it once they are within the shop also I will be carful as to which shop I place the point of sale in. I will need to find out about the style of the shops that my chosen brand is usually placed in. Safety I will make sure my product is safe to all heights of people and will make sure there is no sharp edges and to ensure there is no tripping hazards' will have to ensure my point of sale is made out of a sensible material which will make it less of a hazard to people. I will need to also ensure my point of sale is unable to be stolen as this could cause safety problems to the public. Size I will need to make sure that my point of unit is of an average size to allow the customers to be able to see the product comfortably. I will need to make sure the point of sale unit does not swamp the product on sale. I will make sure the product is of a certain size to ensure the point of sale does not swamp the item. Function I will make sure the point of sale allows the customer to interact with it, allowing the customer more likely to buy it. I will possibly supply testers and freebies of the product so that the customers are sometimes more likely to buy the product. I will make sure I don’t give out too many freebies otherwise the customers may not want to buy the product as they will either not like it or they may have not want to buy the product as they have the freebie that has been given out. Material The material of my point of sale will have to be made out of a material that relates to my brands customers. The material of the point of sale will have to represent the price range in which my customer is willing to pay for the brands product.
  • 11. Research Plan Mood board To complete my mood board I will want to research the brand I am choosing and I will study their style to ensure I get the right type of mood board. When I create my mood board I will want to learn about the brand and I will want to learn what their motivation is when creating their products. I will conduct my research using the old spice website to find out what the brands colours and textures are I will also look at their products in shops to find out what type of materials they use in their product. I will need to know some information about the brand before hand as I will need to know what the brands customer base is as this will set the mood board up very well. I will document the evidence in the style of a mood board. Customer Profiling I will complete my piece of research on the customer by observing the customer habits and what the customer is into and what kind of style suits them. I will want to learn about the customer and what the customers styles are. I will talk to the customers and to the company to find out the exact specifications of the customer and what they like. I will conduct my research in the shops that house the product and the places which promote the company. I will need to know what shops house the products and I will need to know where the advertisements of the brand goes. I will document the evidence of the customer profile in a word document with the required notes. Brand Profiling I will complete my piece of research on the brand by studying the brand and how the brand functions and by understanding the brand’s style. I will want to learn what the brand’s style is and what their inspiration and logic is behind their design and branding. I will research on the internet and find out about the brand to ensure I find out what their style is. I will need to know how to find all the pieces of research on the internet and I will need to know where to look for the brand style. I will document the evidence on a PowerPoint where I can display the style of the brand. Environmental Snapshot I will complete my environmental snapshot by going to shops in which old spice is sold and observe the environment and see whether the environment suits the product. I will want to learn how the product gets its positioning in the shop and why it gets positioned their. I will talk to the owners of the shop to see if it was there decision to place the product where it is or whether it was the brands idea to place it in that specific place. I will conduct my research in the shops that feature the product and the shops that feature advertisements for the product. I will document the evidence in a PowerPoint presentation. Questionnaire I will complete my questionnaire by asking members of the public what they think of the point of sale and ask questions on whether they think its effective or not. I will want to learn about the customer and how they see the point of sale and how it comes across to them. I will want to know what the customer thinks of the product. I will want to know where the companies main point of sales are. I will then document the evidence in the style of a questionnaire on a PowerPoint. Market Research To complete my market research I will first of all need to find out where the companies main products are located in shops and find out how much attention these products get compared to rival brands. I will want to learn about the rival brands and the ideas behind some of their products I will also want to know what makes their brand stand out from others if it is shadowing other brands. I will want to speak to some of the shop owners to know whether my brand is reaching out to customers and whether rival brands are overtaking. I will then document the evidence in the style of a PowerPoint. First Hand Existing Design Analysis I will complete the design analysis by going to shops and taking pictures of the fragrances that are on display. I will then use ACCESS FM to analyse the photos that I have taken. I will want to learn how the company and the shop like to display their fragrances that are on display. I will talk to the shop assistant to see whether I can take photos in their shop. I will conduct my research in the shops that feature fragrances on point of sales. I will then document my research on a PowerPoint presentation. Ten Minute Observation To complete my ten minute observation I will want to choose a good point of sale and take note of how many potential customers go over to the point of sale and actually take interest into it. i will want to learn how effective certain points of sale are and I will want to learn more about the brands styling and the customers they attract. I will want to know where some of the best points of sale for my brands are and I will want to know the positioning of the point of sale. I will finally document my evidence on a PowerPoint.
  • 12. Key Findings • All the colours are vibrant. • Use interesting features • Try and target 18 to 35 Mood Board On this mood board I have taken pictures that show the brand Old spice for what it is and shows how old spice use their advertising. The pictures I have got for this mood board allow me to see more in depth of how a point of sale of theirs would look. I have used images purely from their website which have allowed me to create a collage of photos which relate to the old spice brand.
  • 13. Customer Profiling Procter & Gamble, the company behind the Old Spice brand, conducted consumer surveys and found that the vast majority of male body wash is actually purchased by women. The marketing character of old spice offers a stunning dose of masculine eye-candy to appeal to the female audience that apparently makes most of the body wash purchasing decisions, while still also giving the subtle message to men that if they just used Old Spice body wash, they too could be as suave and masculine as Old Spice Man. This image attracts the male population to the brand. It offers eye-candy for the men, making them feel like they need the fragrance. This image shows an old spice advert that is being used to try and show that by using old spice you instantly become a man and attract the females. Old spice has had an extreme makeover changing its customer base from the old aged men to the younger teenage generation. In 2001 old spice had become a top teen brand. They got involved with NASCAR racer Tony Stewart this straight away changed the interest of old spice and they became a modern brand that was very appealing to teenagers. Old spice is now appealing to 18-45 year olds. The first Old Spice product was intended for females, introduced in 1937. Old Spice for men followed in 1938. Best Customer psychological profile •Personality: Young athletes, young self conscious men, and confident. •Importance of Purchase: Minimal •Perceived Risk: Old Spice has been around for a while and people trust the product. •Attitudes and Opinions: The attitudes of the customer are of a highly macho nature, believing that men should be strong, unwavering, and tough and deserve a product that comes with that same attitude. Anything opposite of the attitudes that standby the fruity and floral female hygiene products. •Class Consciousness: whether a man wants to buy Bvlgari because he is of an upper class and feels that if he were to buy Old Spice it might make him look cheap. Key Findings • They aim their product at women originally. • Aimed at young athletes. • A psychological profile.
  • 14. Brand Profiling The old spice brand has been constantly updating since it was introduced. The original logo a clipper ship was changed to a yacht when proctor and gamble took over from the shulton company in 1990 and changed the logo in February 1992 1934 - The Shulton Company was founded by William Schultz. 1937 - Shulton releases Early American Old Spice for women 1938 – Shulton releases Old Spice for men 1968 - Colfax Laboratories is founded by Shulton PLC, UK and CMM, begins manufacturing Old Spice in India. 1969 – Shulton teams with Cosme Matias Menezes (CMM) for marketing, and distribution of Old Spice in India. 1970 - Shulton is sold to American Cyanamid. Shulton becomes their consumer products division. 1990 – Procter & Gamble purchases Old Spice from Shulton/American Cyanamid. The other Shulton products are sold as well. Breck goes to Dial. Pine- Sol goes to Clorox. 1992 – The clipper ship logo is replaced with a yacht 1993 – Procter & Gamble take over Shulton business worldwide, ending the marketing and distribution deal with the Menezes family. CMM continues to manufacture Old Spice. 1999 – Marico Industries obtains marketing and distribution rights for Old Spice in India 2001 – On Thursday April 12, 2001, Procter and Gamble licenses Old Spice to Universal Razor Industries. This ends P&G’s deal with Marico. (MCPL now serves India, Africa, and Russia) 2008 – The original Old Spice scent is repackaged as "Classic Scent". The traditional glass bottles are replaced with plastic, grey stoppers with red. Here I have created a time line on the changes that have been made from 1934 to 2008 on Old spice. This timeline shows the modernisation that Old spice have taken to try and bring in new customers on all of their products. Key Findings • The masculine change. • Original product for women. • Replaced the clipper ship with a yacht.
  • 15. Environmental Snapshot Here I have taken some environmental snapshot pictures in Boots and one of Superdrug I have also taken a few of the internet from different stores worldwide to compare the differences. The pictures on the right are from an American store that promotes Old spice. This shows that Old spice’s target audience are based more in America due to the point of sale design. The point of sale on the right hand side shows interactive features that are helping with the promotion of Old spice. In comparison the pictures on the left have no interactive features and do not have their own display but are displayed with many other products with Old spice on the bottom shelf out of the way. This tells me that Old spice have not put a lot of effort into the promotion of their product in some shops. The Old spice products in Boots are surrounded by other products that are related to that type of product. Old spice’s products look like they are being shadowed by all the other products within the shop. In Boots there are only a few products from Old spice this tells me that Old spice need to improve on their distribution of products within certain shops. Superdrug is one of the shops that I will want to place my point of sale in as Superdrug fits the style of my brand. Superdrug has many fragrance point of sales within their shop which display many different men's fragrances. I want to place my point of sale in this shop as all the products relate to my brand are of the same sort of price which makes my brand fit right in. All of the products have the same kind style as Old spice and all offer the same things as Old spice. In shops like Superdrug and Boots my product and my point of sale would be ideal for these shops mainly due to pricing. Key Findings • Point of sales only in America for Old spice. • Only a few products in shops. • Positioned in the same area as other deodorants.
  • 16. First Hand Existing Design Analysis Aesthetics: The aesthetics of this point of sale unit look great and have been designed very well. These units has various layers of products that have been designed for men and women the men’s products have been placed on the top shelves and the women’s products on the lower shelves. This unit has no features that make it different from any other units. All of the unit along the wall next to Gucci have the same design therefore the same features this however is a weakness of the point of sale as it make the point of sales look too similar and customers will not see the difference in brands they will only see difference in price. The diesel and Giorgio Armani point of sale have the exactly same design features which make them look the same and neither of them will stand out as they look too similar. Cost: The cost of these products are ranged between £18 - £72.This would be targeted at an age range of 18- 36 year olds that prefer an expensive deodorant or aftershave. These three point of sales all have the same costing point of sales, These point of sales feature the same layout and materials making the cost the same. Customer: The customer for these products are for men and women aged between 18 - 30.Gucci has products that are of an expensive price and are targeted at the wealthier audience. The Giorgio Armani range have the same kind of age range as Gucci and these will both be aimed at wealthier people and the more professional male and female. The diesel range is slightly cheaper however will still be targeted at the same age range as the other two point of sales. Environment: The environment for this point of sale is next to many other points of sale that are of an expensive price and are aimed at the wealthier audience. All of the point of sale next to this one have the same layout which displays men’s fragrances at the top and women’s at the bottom. Size: The size of this point of sale is at a good size however does not stand out as all of the point of sales are exactly the same but with different products. Gucci should have made their point of sale more exclusive by making either larger of smaller to give it exclusivity. Safety: This point of sale unit is very safe as it has been enclosed in the wall so it prevents the unit collapsing on any customers. This unit has no sharp edges as all of the edges have been enclosed in the wall. The unit safety features are the same to all the other point of sales on the wall like this one. Function: The function of this point of sale is to attract customers to. The point of sale unit offers lighting that will be more appealing to the customers. The title Gucci is lit up which will be more likely to attract more customers. None of these point of sales uses any interactive features however they all incorporate testers to the public which is a good part of these point of sales. Material: This point of sale is made out of acrylic and would have probably had a vinyl gloss finish to make it look more expensive and more aesthetically pleasing. The material of all three of these point of sales are probably the same as it would have saved the company money to make them all out of the same material.
  • 17. First Hand Existing Design Analysis Aesthetics: The aesthetics of these points of sale are very modern and stylish and suit house of Fraser's style very well. The point of sale at the top uses very stylish materials which make it stand out compared to all of the other point of sales. The materials on the top point of sale make it stand out as no other point of sale incorporates all the same materials as this one. The point of sale in the centre is also a very exclusive and different point of sale as no other point of sale uses the same design as this one or the same materials in the same way that this point of sale uses them. The point of sale located at the bottom is also very stylish and uses the colours well.it also uses stylish materials that many other point of sales in the shop use making it not seem as exclusive as the different point of sales. Cost: The top point of sale that is housing YSL is of an expensive price which ranges from £20 to £70.The point of sale in the middle which is housing Dolce & Gabbana ranges from £18 to £60.which is a cheap to medium price. The bottom point of sale which is Giorgio Armani ranges from £30 to £70. Customer: All of these point of sales target the same audience which is men and women aged between 20 years old and 38 years old. They all have slightly different designs to try and ensure they reel their customer in better than other points of sales. Environment: These point of sales are all in house of Fraser department store and are located in the fragrance section with loads of other point of sales. They all have been positioned in certain areas to ensure they gain their customers. Safety: These three point of sales all incorporate the same safety features however they will have some slightly different requirements which they have to meet to ensure that the point of sale is safe for the public viewing. Size: These point of sales are all of a good size for the public viewing and because they are not tall but medium sized then the public will prefer this size according to my questionnaire. Function: These point of sales have the same features these are lights. Their is lights that make the title light up and allow the user to be attracted to the point of sale more. Material: The two point of sales at the bottom of the page use the same material which is acrylic. The point of sale at the top of the page is the only different point of sale in the shop that uses glass wood and acrylic this make s the point of sale stand out much more compared to all the other points of sale that use the same material.
  • 18. Aesthetics: All three of these Hugo boss point of sales incorporate the same design except for one as it is a different Hugo boss style. The Hugo boss Orange uses the colour orange within all of its products and uses the colour orange to promote the new range that they offer by being different. The other two Hugo boss point of sale incorporate the usual Hugo boss style however they are different styled point of sales. The Hugo boss one in the middle offers the women's fragrance at the top and the men's at the bottom. However the other Hugo boss point of sale has the men's fragrances at the top and the women's products at the bottom. Cost: The cost of all three point of sale products range between £26 - £56.These products are all of an average to high price. These point of sales have been designed to make them look more expensive than they actually are. Customer: The customer of this product would be 18 to 40 year olds. Hugo boss tries to aim their product at the more professional type of men who want to smell more masculine. These three products all try to attract the same age range and style of men and women. Environment: All three of these point of sales are placed in an area where fragrances are the main selling point. They have all been placed in different areas to try and persuade customers to purchase them by allowing the customer to keep on seeing the fragrances. Safety: These three Hugo boss point of sales would all incorporate the same safety features enabling them to be safe to the public. The safety of these point of sales would all be the same as the manufacture has to ensure that the features are the same. Size: The point of sale on the left and the point of sale in the middle are of the same size. This is a good size for a point of sale as it allows the customer to have to take more interest into the product as they have to bend down just to try and see some of the products. The point of sale at the bottom of the page is eye level with all customers looking at it, it also offers all the products to be display very clearly and allows the customers to easily be able to access the products. Function: These Hugo boss point of sale units all have the same features and they are lighting in the title and behind the products shelving. The function of these point of sales are to attract customers. These point of sales do this quite well as they are positioned in different areas of the fragrance section and allow the customer to be constantly reminded of the Hugo boss point of sale units. Material: The three of these units would be made out of the same material. Which consists of acrylic and some glass. This allows the point of sale to look modern and stylish as well as expensive which attracts more customers to the point of sale. First Hand Existing Design Analysis

  • 20. Metal Acrylic Glass Wood Small - 1 Medium - 18 Large - 3 Extra Large - 8 After conducting my questionnaire of asking a mixture of 30 people from the public and from my family and friends seven different questions regarding point of sale units. I have found some results that I will take into consideration when constructing my point of sale unit. Results After asking the question, What size do you like a point of sale to be ?.I have found some results that I will have to take into consideration. I have found out that the majority of people prefer observing and using a medium sized point of sale in comparison to any other size. With extra large coming in second place with 8 people choosing it and large in third with 3 people choosing it and small coming bottom where only a single person chose it. The Medium sized point of sale won by a massive ten people this told me that a medium sized point of sale is much preferred by the public. I then queried them about their answer and asked them why they chose their answer over the others. I found out that the people who preferred the medium sized point of sales thought they looked better and that they didn’t try too hard to stand out and end up overshadowing the product on display. The people who chose the extra large thought that it was better to try and attract as many people as you could to the point of sale even if it means that the product will become shadowed by the point of sale. As for the few people that chose large they thought it looks better to be slightly bigger than normal but not too big so that the product is not shadowed. As for the other person who chose small they just thought that it was better if the product had more presence compared to the point of sale that was displaying it. After asking the question What material would you like to see on a point of sale ?.I found some interesting results that didn’t surprise me as much as I thought it would. I found out that the majority of people preferred to see Metal on a point of sale unit. This was no surprise to me as metal is modern and is the latest material that designers are using. In second it was acrylic which was no surprise at all as loads of manufactures are using it in their products and because of the shine it can give of it makes it look more expensive. In third glass came this was a surprise as I have only seen a few glass point of sale unit however the few I have seen are very stylish and modern. In fourth was wood which I was expecting as wood is very traditional and many point of sale’s have stopped using this to try and modernise their company. Judging by my results I will look into making my point of sale out of Metal however due to the prices of it I may have to settle for acrylic. However going by the public acrylic will still attract people to the point of sale. The people who chose Metal said that they thought it was stylish and expensive making the product on sale appear more exclusive and expensive. They also said that by having Metal it can make the product on display look better than what it is. The people who chose acrylic said that they thought it was expensive and stylish as they claimed to have seen it on point of sale units from brands such as Chanel and Burberry. This told me that acrylic may be the way to go due to its cheapness and its effectiveness. People who chose glass said that it made the product more exclusive and that it looked far more expensive than any other material as when there is a point of sale constructed from glass the product is usually enclosed by glass. The few people who chose wood claimed that it was traditional and would look very good depending on the brand. 12 10 6 2
  • 21. Market Research Old Spice just recently became a "once-again" top-competitor for men's fragrance, body wash, deodorant, and antiperspirant. When Axe debuted in the U.S. in 2002 -- their following and target audience were men 18-34 -- and this is exactly where Old Spice had been failing. Old Spice used to be known as an "old man product," but with the help of innovative and fresh, young marketers; the company rose back to life. Old Spice began to target directly with their "the man your man could smell like" campaign -- using Isaiah Mustafa who helped to connect to a younger generation. The commercials/videos were humorous and connected to a younger crowd. • 22. Ten Minute Observation I have observed all three of these point of sales for ten minutes and have taken note of the amount of attention that they get from the public and what lets the point of sale and whether the point of sale lets the product down. I have also judged the point of sale depending on the product it is displaying. This point of sale was the first one I looked at for ten minutes. I have found out that this point of sale unit did not have a lot of attention towards it. It only had three people go up to it in the space of ten minute however they walked away as soon as they saw the state the point of sale was in. This point of sale is intended to be interactive however the age range that this is aimed at has abused the point of sale and drawn all over the point of sale and left it in a mess, Therefor it is not attracting any more customers as they are put of by the mess. This point of sale has been placed at the end of an isle this allows it to be seen by the public who are passing by. The point of sale lets the product down as the product would be bought by a fair few people however the point of sale has been vandalised by the age range for that product. This should be dealt with by the shop manager and something should be put in place to stop this happening. This point of sale was the second one that I observed for ten minutes. In those ten minutes I noticed that it had quite a few people using it straight away when I started my observation. In the space of ten minutes it had 12 people use it which averages out to more that a person a minute. I see this point of sale as a strong point of sale due to the strong advertisement everywhere else. This point of sale is for the national lottery which most people know about and would use every week this explains why this point of sale had this amount of attention. The point of sale allows the customer to use the plastic stand on it to fill out their lottery card. This makes it more efficient for the customer. The point of sale is at a good position in the shop allowing customers who are leaving the shop or entering the shop be able to see the point of sale before they leave and as they enter. This point of sale is very effective due to what it is trying to sell. This was the third and final point of sale that I observed for ten minutes. This point of sale had been placed in eye line straight when you enter the shop making it catch your eye straight away. This point of sale I was surprised at because it did not have the attention that I expected it to have. In the space of the ten minutes only four people observed it however did not use the product on display. The point of sale itself is placed in a great area and also has the product at the point of sale and has an interactive feature that the customer can use. This point of sale however I think did not live up to the expectation due to the product on sale. The point of sale done a good job at advertising the product however the public showed no interest in the product on display. Key Findings • Interacted with the product. • Only spent a few seconds with the product on display. • Wasn’t interested in bad product.
  • 23. Old spice Point of sales only in America. masculine change. Wasn’t interested in the product. Positioned in the same area as other deodorants Try and target 18 to 35 Placed near front of shops. Only spent a few seconds with the product on display Only a few products in shops. They aimed the product at women first. Aimed at young athletes Only spent a few seconds with the product on display Replaced the clipper ship with a yacht. All the colours are vibrant. Most point of sales used straight lines. Interacted with the product.
  • 24. Further Specification • I will use a mixture of curved shapes and straight shapes/lines on my point of sale because I think that curved/Straight lines and shapes look more aesthetically pleasing. • I will want to make my point of sale out of metal judging by my questionnaire that I conducted, however because of the price of carbon fibre I will probably have to made my point of sale out of acrylic. • I will need to make my point of sale interactive so that customers are more likely to buy the product and judging by my ten minute observation people like being able to interact with the product. • I will have to want to make my point of sale using a mixture of red white and blue which are the colours of Old Spice. • Because Old Spice do not have any point of sales in the UK my point of sale will be the first one so I will have to make it stand out from others. • I don’t know whether I want to carry on Old Spice’s modernism style as the original design designs of Old Spice where very good. • Based on my questionnaire I will want to make my point of sale medium sized or extra large as theses where the most popular choices by the public. • I will want to place my point of sale somewhere around the front of the shop so that it is in the view of the customers. • Old spice have used a very masculine way of advertising however I'm not too sure if I want to carry on this masculinity with my point of sale. • I will possibly supply customers with freebies and testers to allow them to get a taste of the product. • I will aim to keep costs medium to low priced so that my point of sale fits in with the pricing of the brand.

  • 34. Development Material – Stainless Steel My concept idea that I am going to develop will can be made out of many materials. The main materials that I am considering are Metal , Acrylic , Glass and Wood. The housing of my concept idea will need to follow Old spice’s modern style so it will be beneficial for me to use either glass , acrylic or metal. Stainless Steel is one of the metals that I am considering for the housing of my concept idea. Stainless Steel maintains it strength an is corrosion and heat resistant. Stainless steel will allow me to be able to clean it very easily with any type of modern day cleaner. The material requires little maintenance unlike some surfaces. This material also has a great strength to weight ratio. This metal does however have it disadvantages such as it is expensive in certain quantities and grades of it. The metal is difficult to weld due to its fast dissipation off heat. Material - Acrylic Acrylic is another one of the materials that I may be using for my concept idea. Acrylic is a great product that can be easily shaped and moulded. It is water resistant and does not lose its colour. Acrylic is very lightweight in comparison to the other products that I may be using. Acrylic is also impact resistant and is much more resistant than glass this is why acrylic is a good alternative to glass. Acrylic also comes in many different colour and many different grades of transparency. Acrylic has some major downfalls the main one being that it is very easily scratched by materials that are not even that sharp. The acrylic can start to change colour ever so slightly when coming into contact with heat or direct light for prolonged periods. Acrylic is not easily recycled and is not biodegradable which causes the product to be harmful to the environment.
  • 35. Material - Glass Development Glass is another one of the materials that I have been guided to use for my concept idea. Glass has some great advantages such as it can be made into different shapes and sizes. The glass can be different colour and can have different grades or transparency. Glass can be placed in any type of conditions as it does not oxidise. Glass also does not allow for water to pass through. Glass however does have its downfalls such as it is an expensive material it also breaks very easily under pressure unless the glass is reinforced. Glass also melts under high temperatures this however will not effect my concept. Material - Wood - Solid and hard material - Disordered and amorphous structure - Fragile and easily breakable into sharp pieces - Transparent to visible light - Inert and biologically inactive material. - Glass is 100% recyclable and one of the safest packaging materials due to its composition and properties Wood is another material that may be best suited for my concept idea I have looked at my questionnaire and it tells me that wood is the least favourite material probably because of its looks and that it lacks the modernism for Old spice. Wood comes in many different types but all of the wood have the same advantages and disadvantages. Some advantages of wood are that it is lightweight depending on the size of the wood but for the amount I will need it will be lightweight it is also cost effective and I will be able to gain large amounts of wood for a good price. Wood is a renewable source which makes it very easy to get access to and it is 100% recyclable. The disadvantages of wood are its strength it can split very easily along the grain. Wood cannot be made into shapes easily and will require a high level of skill to construct well. Wood also rots when in contact with water or air this however can be prevented by use of certain products. Wood is also quite flammable.
  • 36. Development Material – canvas I can use a canvas material to construct the sails that are located on the front of my concept idea. Canvas will be a good material to construct the sails out of due to it is very easy to cut to shape and it is also very lightweight and strong. Having canvas as the material of the sails it will still allow them to move when in contact with the wind which is exactly what I need for the sails. Canvas is also very easy to repair in comparison to other materials that I will consider using for the sails. Canvas is also waterproof and windproof due to its tight weave. One of the biggest advantages of Canvas is its acceptance to chemical treatments that can make it flame retardant and increase its water resistance even more. Canvas has few disadvantages such as it absorbs things very easily so this makes it bad as it will stain very easily. Because it is a soft fabric if not treated right it will tear and rip. The canvas will need to be treated with a chemical before it can be water resistant to a certain degree. Material - Nylon I could use Nylon for the sails of my concept as nylon is specially designed for sails so it would make sense if I was to use this material it all depends on the cost of the material and whether or not it will serve the purpose of my concept better than canvas. Nylon has some advantages such as it is an updated version from materials like canvas and it is cost effective which will aid me when constructing my concept as I want to keep costs as low as possible. Nylon has a high tenacity and has a good strength to weight ratio. Nylon also has a high resilience and has an excellent abrasive resistance.
  • 37. Development Material - Rubber Material - Metal Rubber is one of the two materials that I may construct the feet out of. The feet are going to be placed on the bottom of my concept. Rubber feet have quality traction which is ideal for my concept. The rubber feet also don’t scratch the floor or whatever surface they are on. The rubber also conducts electricity which will make my concept safer. Rubber feet are also shock absorbent. There are no disadvantages of rubber feet that I have found so far. Metal is the other material that I may use for the feet of my concept idea. The metal feet look much more stylish compared to the rubber feet. The metal feet are also stronger and harder than the rubber feet making them less likely to need replacing. The metal feet however will scratch the surface it is on and it does not conduct electricity like rubber. Overall the rubber feet are much better than the metal feet in all ways.
  • 38. Development Material – Vinyl Letters To make the letters on the bottom of my concept idea I will use either vinyl or acrylic. Vinyl is a good material to use but I think it looks cheap and it is ineffective as I don’t believe it stands out that much. However acrylic can have downfalls such as it will be harder to construct it will cost much more compared to the vinyl. Vinyl comes in many different sizes , fonts , colours and patterns. You can create long messages with little money being spent. Vinyl letters can be placed virtually anywhere and can be easily positioned. Vinyl is very affordable and depending on where you get it from then you can get an 8ft long message for £2o.The letters can be stuck very easily to virtually any material. The letters are also designed to be removable so they can be changed anytime. The only disadvantage of the vinyl is that because of its cheapness the quality will not be as good for my concept as it will make my concept look cheaper. Acrylic lettering would also be good for my concept idea as it looks more expensive. Acrylic lettering can be custom painted which is good as I could make them fit in more with my design. Acrylic letters are durable and practical. The acrylic can be used as a better alternative to metal lettering which costs more. Acrylic lettering is much more stylish than vinyl and will hopefully make my design look much better compared to the vinyl. Acrylic letters however will cost me more to get and will have to be laser cut which will require more time. Material - Acrylic Letters
  • 39. Manufacture – Acrylic lettering To make the acrylic lettering for my concept design I will first need to design what I need the letters to say. I will use Tech Soft for this. Tech soft will allow me to construct the letters to the exact shape and size that I want. Once I have done this I will need to send my work to the laser cutter where it will be cut out. The acrylic lettering will not take that long to cut out as I only have 8 letters that will require cutting. These letters will be fairly small as well. Construction – Acrylic letters After I have constructed my acrylic letters I will need to place them onto my design. To do this I will need to use either hot glue or araldite. Hot glue is very easy to use and can be applied very easily to my design. The hot glue dries clear with little mess it would be good for the application of the acrylic letters. Araldite is also a great chemical that I could apply to the letters so that their would be a tight bond to the letters. Araldite also dries clear and is relatively easy to apply. Development
  • 40. Manufacture - Sails If I decide to use nylon for the sails on my design then I will need to use a craft knife and will need to cut the nylon very quickly to avoid rough edges and a messy end product. I will have to mark out where I want to cut the nylon and then I will need to use a craft knife to cut along the line that I made. When I use the craft knife I will have to ensure that I have a couple of spare blades as the nylon may force the blades to break. If I decide to use canvas for the sails then I will need to use elongated scissors to cut it. First I will need to mark out on the material the size and shape I require and then I just need to simply cut it. Canvas will make it much easier for me to make the sails out of as it does not require a lot of skill just a steady hand to follow the markings. The canvas will gain a clean cut with the scissors and it will not matter if I end up ruining the first piece as canvas is relatively cheap in comparison to nylon. It will be in my best interest to use canvas due to its easy cutting and that it is inexpensive compared to the nylon. Construction - Sails To attach the sails to my design I will need to use either a stapler or I will need to drill holes in the wood and in the canvas. To attach the canvas to the wood I will need to make sure that I first have the material cut to the right shape and size. I will then need to staple the canvas to different places on my design. The stapler will be very easy to use and will be cost effective and will not take much time at all. However if I decide to use a drill to place holes in the material and my design I will need to ensure that they are in the perfect place and I will need to ensure that I have the right sized drill bit. After I drill the holes in both the wood and the canvas then I will need to get some small screws and place them through the hole of the canvas and then through the holes in the wood and then screw them in with the screwdriver or the drill.
  • 41. Aesthetics On my design I have decided to place a fan at one end so that the canvas material will blow and move which will increase the interactivity of my design. This feature will make it more attractive to the public and will make my design much better. I have decided to do this as my design was lacking interactivity. With the fan in my design it will blow the canvas which will act like the sails which will refer back to old spice and give it a better feel. The canvas will have the old spice fragrance on it so that when the fan is on the scent will be pushed of the canvas and spread around the area. This is what the sails will look like.I will place the fan here as there is space for the fan to sit. With the fan being here it is in a perfect position to blow the sails and give of the old spice scent. These are some fan ideas that I could use in my design.
  • 42. Manufacture - Housing To make the housing of my design I will use pine. First of all I will need to mark the piece of wood using a pencil and ruler. After I have marked out the pine I will need the use the band saw to cut it out with. After I have cut the wood I will need to ensure that the wood is smooth to do this is will use the belt sander. I will need to use Tech soft to design the curved piece of acrylic I will then need to send it to the laser cutter to get cut out. I will have to make 6 pieces of wood and one piece of acrylic to make the housing. Here I have pointed out the six pieces of wood and one piece of acrylic that I will need to make the housing. Construction - Housing To put these six pieces of wood and one piece of acrylic together I will use a mixture of joints and adhesives. I will use the butt joint to join the bottom and side pieces of wood together. I will then use the mitre joint to join the other two side pieces of wood together. I will finally use araldite to joint the curved bit of acrylic to the wood. Once I have attached the wood and the acrylic then my housing is finally complete and is then ready to be attached to the base.
  • 43. Construction - Base Manufacture - Base To manufacture the base of my design I can either use four pieces of wood or a single solid piece of wood. If I use four pieces of wood it will allow me to make a more complex base and will also allow me to change to very easily and will also allow me to not waste any material. To make the four pieces of wood I will first need to get a large piece of oak wood I will then need to use the band saw to carefully cut out the shapes that I need to make the base. To do this I will first need to mark out on the piece of wood the dimensions of the base and then I will cut it out with the band saw. Once I have used the band saw to cut the wood out I will then use the belt sander to smooth the edges down. To put the four pieces of wood together I can either use an adhesive or I can use a joint that will support itself. I will connect the four pieces of wood using a dovetail joint. The dovetail joint will be ideal for what I need it for as it will make my design look very neat and tidy. 1. Square the ends of the wood to be dovetailed. 2. Set the sliding bevel to a suitable pitch of between 1 in 6 for heavy work and 1 in 8 for smaller and more detailed work. Avoid sharp angles as the points of tails break easily. 3. Scribe the tails on the end and face of the wood and mark the “waste” pieces. 4. Clamp the wood in a vice and cut on the waste side with a tenon saw. 5. Lay the two pieces over each other and transfer the markings through the cuts with a tenon saw. 6. Remove the waste between tails and pins with a chisel To construct the dovetail joint I will need to : This selected area is the base. Here I have spoken about how I would use wood to manufacture my base however when making my design I chose to use acrylic purely because of its aesthetics it proved to be easier to work with and came in a variety of colours unlike wood. The acrylic also would not need and type of finish such as varnish as wood would need a finish such as this.
  • 44. Specification Checkpoint I have so far achieved this specification as my design has successfully used a mixture of curved and straight lines as well as shapes. • I will use a mixture of curved shapes and straight shapes/lines on my point of sale because I think that curved/Straight lines and shapes look more aesthetically pleasing. • I will want to make my point of sale out of metal judging by my questionnaire that I conducted, I also could use carbon fibre however because of the price of carbon fibre I will not be using this. I will probably have to make my point of sale out of acrylic. I have not decided to make my design out of either of these materials as metal I think will not suit my brand and carbon fibre will cost quite a lot of money for the amount that I want. Acrylic will also not suit my design I believe that wood will suit my design the best so I have decided to use wood for the majority of my design. • I will need to make my point of sale interactive so that customers are more likely to buy the product and judging by my ten minute observation people like being able to interact with the product. I have made my design slightly interactive as the customer can press a button that will turn on a fan which will make the fragrance on the sails spread around the area. • I will have to want to make my point of sale using a mixture of red white and blue which are the colours of Old Spice. So far I have not mentioned that I will use red white and blue however I constructed a model using Google sketch and I have used them three colours in it. • Because Old Spice do not have any point of sales in the UK my point of sale will be the first one so I will have to make it stand out from others. I have kind of made my design stand out as it is using Old Spice’s logo which is unusual which will hopefully make it stand out. • I don’t know whether I want to carry on Old Spice’s modernism style as the original design designs of Old Spice where very good. I have continued to use old spice’s modernism style by using their logo as part of my design. • Based on my questionnaire I will want to make my point of sale medium sized or extra large as theses where the most popular choices by the public. So far I have not mentioned the size that I will make my design, however I will decide to make my design medium sized. • I will aim to keep costs medium to low priced so that my point of sale fits in with the pricing of the brand. I have said that I would use wood this will help me keep costs low and will make my design fit in better with the companies style. • I will want to place my point of sale somewhere around the front of the shop so that it is in the view of the customers. So far I have not mentioned where I will place my design within a shop. • Old spice have used a very masculine way of advertising however I'm not too sure if I want to carry on this masculinity with my point of sale. • I will possibly supply customers with freebies and testers to allow them to get a taste of the product. I am not too sure how I will carry on Old Spice’s masculinity so far I have not met this specification. I have not mentioned freebies as such at the moment but I have used the idea of a fan blowing the fragrance of the sails around the shop.
  • 45. Aesthetics On my design I can add a hole behind the sails so that I could place the old spice fragrance behind them and them make them squirt the fragrance once the fan is turned on. This will probably have to be done by using a motor that triggers the fan to turn on as well as the fragrance to squirt. I will need to cut a hole inside my design to do this I will need to use a drill with a circular drill bit and I will then need to use the hegner saw. To do this using the hegner saw I will need to take the saw’s blade of and place it inside the hole that I just drilled out. I am not too sure how big I will need to make the hole I presume that it will not be too large and would be rather small. This is how my design will look after I have drilled the hole in the back after I have created the hole that will house a bottle of the fragrance. This is the hole that I will drill out.
  • 46. Usability I will design my point of sale in way in which it will have the ability to be mounted onto a table this will be of an average height to the average Male/Female. I will make my point of sale use rubber feet which I mentioned earlier on in development which will aid in the security of my point of sale when on a table. Having my point of sale at this height will make it more ergonomic for the user. This is the style of table that I will use to mount my design on. This drawing that I have made shows the average height of a person and where my point of sale will be positioned. Usability I will make the button seen in this picture out of rubber as it will be safer. By having rubber for the button I will not cause any safety issues to rise compared to a material such as wood or metal. If I used metal the edges would be far harder to make smooth to prevent scratching. By having rubber it will be relatively soft and will not have any sharp edges.
  • 47. Components The wiring for my point of sale will need to go inside the design. I will make ridges that the wiring inside will sit on I will have to use a staple gun as well to hold the wires in place. Here are the ridges that I would put in place on my design to ensure that the wires can go around to the designated point. I would need to use a staple gun which would ensure the wires stay In the correct places. Components On my design I will place L.E.D lights around the letters so that the lettering will attract the customers more and will look more aesthetically pleasing. The lights that will be placed around the letters will be coloured blue and red this links with Old Spice and will make my design look more themed to Old Spice. The L.E.D’s will be placed around these letters and will have to be positioned carefully around all of the letters. I will have half of the letters red and half of them blue.
  • 48. Manufacturer Usability I will need to make my design safer for the use of the public I will need to do this by making the sharp edges on my design either rounded or I will have to put a rubber guard around them. If I decide to round the edges off I will need to use the belt sander of the file and will need to ensure that the edges are not sharp in any way. If I decide to use rubber guards around the edges then I will probably be able to buy them off the internet. These are some of the guards that I may be able to use on my design this will hopefully ensure protection. This is my other option which is the belt sander or file this will also enable me to make the edges smoother. The red rings represent the main corners that I will need to cover or adapt. To make the piece of rubber I can either buy it in from the internet or produce it myself. If I was to create the piece of rubber myself it would be much hassle for such a small component this is why I will choose to buy it in from the internet. I have said that I will use rubber corner edges so that I can protect my design. I decided not to use this as they were not aesthetically pleasing. The rubber edges however will ensure that no injury’s happen, I did ensure that I used acrylic which I filed down so that they are not sharp.
  • 49. This button will open the door to the right and will also trigger the fragrance behind the sails to activate and spray the fragrance onto the sails while this is happening the fan will be turned on as well. Usability Construction This button will have to be wired up from the inside and the wires will run through the design. I will support the wires how I have shown in this picture using ridges that will hold the wire and then I will use a staple gun to ensure that the wires do not move. The door and the little slit in my design will be wired up to the button which will activate them upon interaction with the button. To make the button stable I will have to craft a gap in the material below which will house the button. I will then need to make sure that the button stays in the gap. To do this I will use araldite to glue the sides of the button to the sides of the gap. The button will still easily be able to be pushed down by the user as their will be nothing stopping it. I will ensure that the button works before I glue it to the gap made. I have said that I will use a indent in the material so that the button becomes stable I could however use screws either side of the button to ensure stability and would allow the button to be pressed many times without losing its positioning.
  • 50. Manufacture ConstructionTo manufacture the rubber feet I can go down two paths one being me making the rubber feet and the second me ordering the feet online. If I get the rubber feet online then It will allow me to have more time for other parts of my design. If I decide to make the feet myself It will take me a while as producing the rubber feet will be very tricky and time consuming. This is why I have decided to get the feet from the internet. To attach the rubber feet onto my design I can either use the screw on rubber feet which I will need to drill a hole into my design so that the rubber feet can screw into it. The other option is that I get rubber feet that I will be able to attach on with an adhesive. If I attach the feet with an adhesive I will use araldite. I will need to make holes in the bottom of my design if I use the screw in rubber feet. I will make the holes in the bottom of my design using a drill. Araldite will be the best glue that I can use for gluing rubber feet onto the bottom of my design. This is because it is the strongest resin that I can use. To attach the rubber feet on my design I has said that I will use araldite, instead I could have used screws which would secure the feet more and would make the design more stable and less prone to fall over.
  • 51. Manufacture ConstructionTo make the door I will first need to get a piece of wood that is at least an inch thick. I then need to draw out the size of the door on the piece of wood and then using a hegner saw I will cut the markings out. I will then need to make sure that I use the belt sander to smooth all of the edges on the wood. I will need to purchase two hinges. The hinges will be placed at the top and bottom of the door. I will also need to create a few small holes on the door and on my design so that the hinge can be screwed in. I will use the hinges to attach the door to my design. I will need some small screws that will go through the door and the hinge. The screws will go through the small hole that I made on my design. Here I have shown a Google sketch up model that is showing an example of how my door on my design would look. I have said that I will use screws to secure the door however they could potentially crack the acrylic due to its thickness, I instead used epoxy resin to secure the hinge to the frame and to the door. The epoxy resin proved to be a bit messy but prevented me cracking my door using screws.
  • 52. Usability The fan that is in my design will work by being activated by the button on the front of my design. The fan will be battery powered. It will be position at the side of my design and will automatically come on when the button is turned on. This will also trigger the fragrance to spray onto the sails and the fan will fan the scent around the area. The button on the front of my design will be wired up to a circuit board in the centre of my design. The circuit board will also be connected to the fan and the fragrance bottle mechanism. The circuit board will have to be positioned in the centre of my design and will have to be supported by small brackets. It will be positioned on the back wall of my design. Components I will need to use a circuit board in my design it will be placed inside my design. I can use resistors so that I can allow a certain voltage to flow through to the other components. The circuit board will be connected to the fan and the button. The circuit board will be powered by a battery that will also be connected. Battery Fan Button The circuit board is the only way that I will be able to connect all three things to it and still be able to easily manage the other components. The Fan , Button and Battery. The circuit board will have to be positioned in the middle of the inside of my design and the wires will be able to easily run above and below it. This is where the circuit board and wires will be positioned inside my design.
  • 53. Components Components The fan on my design will be positioned at the side of the it. I will have to make a indent in the design so that the fan can sit in and will be more stable. To safely secure my fan I will have to use a hot glue gun this will ensure that it stays in position and does not move. The fan will have to be soldered to the circuit board to ensure that it turns on when the button is pressed. The fan will be battery powered and will probably take either AA batteries or AAA batteries. The battery on my design will have to be positioned inside the housing and will power the circuit board and will power the fan. The batteries will have to be positioned close to the circuit board as it will be easier. Inside the housing the battery will have to be placed on the side of the wall and will need a case to ensure it is stable. I will have to make sure that the battery is secure and I will have to use a hot glue gun to secure the case to the inside and I will also use small screws to ensure that the case is secure and will not fall when in transport. This is the indent that will secure the fan and will also have a small hole inside the indent so that the wires can go through. I have said that I will use batteries in my design I could also use the mains as this will allow me to have higher wattage and would be more efficient. However by using the mains supply it will restrict the positioning of my design compared to batteries where I can place my design freely around.
  • 54. Manufacture Construction Material I will use acrylic panels that will be placed on top of the wood that is the housing of my design. This is what the acrylic panels will look like on my final design. Acrylic will probably be the best and easiest material for my design as it is easy to use and is easy to shape. To apply the acrylic to the wood I will use epoxy resin. Once the glue has been applied to the wooden surface. I will then apply each pane individually. The epoxy resin will have to be applied before I apply any of the sails. To manufacture these acrylic panes I will use the laser cutter. This will enable me to cut all the pieces that I require with ease and will be the most efficient way of producing the panes to size. Acrylic is one of the easiest materials to work with in terms of the production of my design. I have looked at other materials such as wood and various metals like aluminium. I have concluded that acrylic is the best for my design based on these various tests that I have taken. 0 2 4 6 8 10 Safety Test Safety Test
  • 55. In my design I have said that I will be using oak wood for the base of my design and I will be using oak wood for the housing of my design. I have then gone on to mention that the housing of my design which is currently wood will have acrylic panes placed over the top of the wood so that I can get the colour that I want. I have made sure that I am using these three colours I have shown this in a Google sketch up model and have mentioned it when considering the material that will have these colour capabilities. I have not given any accurate dimensions as yet for the sizing of my design I will however mention the exact measurement in the cutting list later on • I will aim to keep costs medium to low priced so that my point of sale fits in with the pricing of the brand. I have said that I would use wood this will help me keep costs low and will make my design fit in better with the companies style. I have now gone on to mention that I will be placing acrylic panes over the top of the wood so that I can get the colours that I want. • I will want to place my point of sale somewhere around the front of the shop so that it is in the view of the customers. I have still not mentioned the positioning of my design within a shop. I will however be showing this later on.
  • 56. Manufacture Construction To manufacture the slot in the side of my design that will hold and support the fan. I Will have to use the laser cutter so that there is a hole in the acrylic I will then use some small pieces of acrylic that I can cut using the band saw which will be positioned underneath the hole that has been made I will then position a small piece of wood with a small hole which the wires of the fan will go through. The hole will have to be big enough so that the wires can securely go through. I will use epoxy resin to secure the pieces of acrylic to each other and the small piece of wood to them. The epoxy resin will be able to hold the pieces of wood as well as the acrylic. I will have to ensure that I keep all of the pieces carefully aligned to ensure that the wires will be able to easily go through. I have said that I will use liquid solvent cement to secure the pieces of acrylic together. This is the best glue that I could use for this particular job however I could also use another glue such as epoxy resin. Solvent cement is much easier to work with and provides very little mess whereas epoxy resin can create a mess easily and can be more difficult to use.
  • 57. Components Components The button on my design which is positioned on the front of it will be linked to a circuit board. The button will have wires that go into the housing and will go up the inside of the wall and will then connect to the circuit board. The button will be already constructed and will just have to be slotted into a hole in the base. The hinges on my design will be connecting to the base and to the door to ensure that the door opens well. The door will be wide enough so that you can place and take out an old spice can. i will also need to make sure that the hinges are evenly placed on the door. The handle for the door will need to be of a reasonable size so that staff can open it when they need to replace the can.
  • 58. Manufacture ConstructionOn the front of my design where I have the Old spice lettering I will have L.E.D’s positioned around them. I will need to make the L.E.D’s go around certain letters so that the point of sale stands out more. I will need to make small areas for the L.E.D’s so that they can be secure. I will need to make sure that all of the L.E.D’s can link together and all run off the same power being a battery inside of my design. To make the small holes for the LE.D’s to sit and be secure I will need to use a small drill and drill holes in the required place that I want. To ensure that the L.E.D’s are securely in position I may need to use epoxy resin or some PVA glue to secure the edges of the L.E.D’s. The L.E.D’s will already be quite secure as their will be holes that they can fit into. These holes will hopefully secure them enough so that I may not even need to use any type of glue or resin. Here I have said that I will use L.E.D lights on my design, they are brighter and more efficient in comparison to normal bulbs. The normal bulbs are considerably worse in every way. L.E.D’s are much safer than normal bulbs as they emit less wattage but more power.
  • 59. Manufacture ConstructionTo manufacture the hole that I will need to secure the button for my design, I may be able to use Techsoft which will enable me to laser cut the hole in the base of my design. This will save me using different machinery to manufacture a time consuming part of my design. The hole in the design will easily be able to hold the button in place but I may still need to use some glue so that it is 100% secure. Once I have made this hole I will then need to ensure that I use small edges that will hold the button in place and that will still enable me to get the wires of the button through the hole. To construct the small edges I will just use small pieces of wood and then use PVA glue to stick the edges to the base so that the button stays in position and so that the wires can get through and also to ensure that the wires are slightly tight and not loosely hanging. I have said that I will use PVA to glue the pieces of wood together this glue is the best for this application and suits it much better than other glue’s. The PVA gets absorbed by the wood and creates long strains into the woods grain and holds the pieces of wood together. This type of glue is far more suitable than a glue such as araldite.

I have not met this specification by showing masculinity instead I have just tried to use the image that old spice try to create by being out at sea and given the customer this feeling. I have not mentioned any freebies or testers that the customer can physically walk away with. I have however made it so that the fragrance will be sprayed around an area when the customer interacts with the button.
  • 62. Plan for manufacture 1. 8. I then created holes in the front of my design and used the pop rivet gun to secure the sails to the front. 9. I finally applied my vinyl letters to my acrylic base.
