I was recently given the
opportunity to write a graduation
admonition for a homeschool
graduate who is both a co-worker
of mine as well as a close
personal friend. Like Gregory,
there are many of you
homeschool students who
will either be graduating this
year or are eagerly anticipating
that day. Regardless of where
you are in your season of
development, I would like you
to be encouraged by Gregory’s
example and challenged by
the same admonitions that
were given to him.
A GRADUATION
AdmonitionBY STEVE CRAIG
Dear Gregory,
Today ends a season of your life. A season of
training, development, preparation, and maturation.
To be sure, these things will continue throughout
your life, yet they have been carried out with an
intensity in this season that will be directed toward
other ends in the next.
Gregory, you have done well and I am proud of the
man you have become. I pray that someday, I too
may experience the joy that your father and mother
must be feeling on this day as they celebrate the
fruit of the many years of tireless discipleship they
have poured into your life. You have not only grown
in favor with men, more importantly you have grown
in favor with God. I believe on this day He is looking
on you with a smile that is of more value than all the
smiles of all the men of the world combined, a smile
which says “well done, good and faithful servant.”
Already, you have achieved a place of influence
in the place God has directed you to labor. You
possess many fine qualities, but I would like to dwell
on several that will have a primary impact on the
rest of your life and its overall fruitfulness.
FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK
First, you are a man that fears the Lord. Many men
possess the talents and abilities that you do, and
yet when the storms and even the successes of life
assail them, they totter, reel and collapse because
their lives are not built upon the firm foundation of
the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 14:26 says “In the fear
of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children
shall have a place of refuge.” The fear of the Lord
will not only stabilize your life and thoughts, it will
provide a place of security and protection for you
and the generations that come from you. Hold fast
to it. May it be the beginning of all your thoughts,
plans, and endeavors.
I see in you also a sincere humility, which will be a
tremendous blessing to you throughout your life.
God resists the proud, but He gives grace to the
humble. It is humility that opens the gates to the
life giving flow of the grace of God in your life, and
if you are to stand at all in your life, it will be in and
by the grace of God. Nurture this quality. Consider
your Lord, who though being God, humbled Himself
beyond what you can even understand. Humility
comes before honor. It was so with Christ and will
be so with you.
Finally, you are a faithful man. This is a rare quality,
as the proverb reminds us when it says “a faithful
5. Vo l u m e 2 , I s s u e 92 , 2 01 5 I C H E C H O M E S C H O O L U P DAT E 5
man, who can find?” I believe that faithfulness
includes the practice of many qualities, such as
love, loyalty, diligence, honesty, integrity, and
sacrifice. However, the faithful man is the one who
exhibits these qualities day in and day out. He is no
flash-in-the-pan or one-shot-wonder. He is a man
that can be relied on over the long haul and in doing
so, he refreshes the souls of those who depend on
him. Most men long for the perfect get-rich-quick
scheme or the magic bullet for success in life. But
Scripture says that it is the faithful man who will
abound with blessings.
Now I would like to commend to your attention
two more things that I pray you will keep in focus
throughout the rest of your life.
The first is gratefulness: We live in a day of
ungratefulness, a sin which is contributing to the
devastation of some Christian, homeschool youth.
As Romans 1:21 teaches us, ungratefulness is a sin
which leads to the corruption of the mind and the
darkening of the heart and all of the evils that flow
from them.
Gregory, I think you know even better than I the
debt of gratitude that you owe to those that have
sacrificially poured into your life over the years.
While there have been many who have invested in
you, in terms of earthly benefactors, I speak primarily
of your father, mother, and older siblings. Not only
have you benefited tremendously by their direct
input into your life, but by God’s providence, you
have been allowed to spend the formative years of
your life within the environment which they created,
an environment of loving relationship and godliness
that very, very few people ever have the opportunity
to experience for even a short time in their life. In
addition to this, you have received a godly heritage
that preceeds even your father and mother.
This is a rich blessing upon your life. Do not take
it for granted.
But more than all of them, you have a heavenly
Father to whom you owe EVERYTHING, not the
least of which is forgiveness for the sins that you
have committed against Him. Like the woman who
anointed Jesus’ feet with ointment and washed them
with her tears and her hair, we have all been forgiven
much. But not many of us are as aware and as grateful
as that woman was. It was great awareness and
gratefulness that led to her great love for Christ. You
are called first and foremost to love the Lord your
God with all of your heart, soul, and might. It is to be
an all-consuming love and the barometric pressure
of your love for God will be determined by your
gratitude to Him.
Gregory, I believe that a life of gratefulness will lead
to the second and final thing that I will commend to
your attention, and that is a life of fruitfulness.
In a way, you stand at the starting line of the great
race of life. The season of preparation for this race is
past. Just how many laps have been determined for
your race, only your heavenly Father knows. There
are so many possibilities to be turned into realities.
So many dreams to see either live or die. So many
challenges to face. So many surprises to be startled
by. It is difficult in one’s youth to comprehend the
true brevity of life and so to be awed and even
overwhelmed by all of the potential that lies ahead.
What is to be the goal of all of this potential and the
guiding principle with which you are to face all of
life’s choices? Certainly, man’s chief end is to glorify
God and to enjoy Him forever. But how do we do
this? There are many passages that speak to how
we bring glory to God, but one passage that puts it
very succinctly is John 15:8, which says “By this my
Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so
prove to be my disciples.”
As overwhelming as the possibilities of life might
seem, your aim in all of life should really come down
to one simple goal, and that is bearing fruit. As
you well know, your life is not your own to live for
your own purposes. You were bought with a price,
so now you must glorify God by bearing fruit. And
what does this fruitful life look like? I believe that
the fruitful life is well depicted by the wise man of
Matthew 7:24 who both HEARS the words of Christ
and DOES them. Who is the man who will remain
strong amidst the storms of life and in spite of
them flourish, even to old age? As J.C Ryle notes,
it is the man who “does not content himself with
listening to exhortations to repent, believe in Christ,
and live a holy life. He actually repents. He actually
believes. He actually ceases to do evil, learns to do
well, abhors that which is sinful, and cleaves to that
which is good. He is a doer as well as a hearer.” This
is a fruitful life.
I will close this thought with one final Scripture.
“For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it,
and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake
it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. But if
it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near
to being cursed, and its end is to be burned. Though
we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved
(Gregory), we feel sure of better things—things that
belong to salvation.” Hebrews 6:7-9
Gregory, it has been a privilege to develop a
friendship with you and an honor to now have the
opportunity to share this admonition with you. I
look forward to observing many years of grateful
fruitfulness as you live the life that now lies before
you. You will be in my prayers.

reasonable time each day. Of course your children
will be learning all of the time, but academics
shouldn’t dominate their every waking hour, nor
should they dominate yours.
Mistake #2: Becoming a
homeschool teacher instead
of being a mom to your kids
and a wife to your husband
Do your little ones ever wonder, “Who is this person
in front of me and what did she do with my mother?”
Relax! Be a mom who homeschools, not a classroom
teacher. And make time for your personal life
including your marriage: your husband didn’t marry
a teacher—he married a wife.
Mistake #3: Making an idol
of education
We criticize public education teachers for “teaching
to the test.” Do we do the same? Do we pressure
ourselves (and our children) to excel at everything?
Do we hold too high expectations of ourselves and
our children?
It is so tempting to place academics before
relationships—to regard homeschooling as a
project. The beauty of homeschooling is not just
that you can differentiate the curriculum for each
child, but that you can disciple each child according
to his bent. Focus on loving your children, not just
filling their heads with knowledge.
Many businesses do year-end evaluations at
the end of their fiscal year. In most homeschools,
the year ends in May and most of us do some
serious self-evaluation through the summer
months. We are preparing for the upcoming
school year and want to make it the greatest
year yet, but if we’re not careful we may haul
along unwanted baggage from the previous year.
Over the years, I’ve noticed several common
mistakes homeschoolers make. I’ve made most
of them myself. Maybe you will see some of
these in your life, too. Ask the Lord to give you
insights into your own family’s situation and to
make course corrections, if necessary.
Mistake #1: Allowing
homeschooling to take over
your house and your life
This mistake is especially hard to avoid during
your first year of homeschooling. Everything is
new and exciting and overwhelming. You have
added another Really Big Job to your already
busy life. Pretty soon your house looks like
a classroom and there is no place to take a
break; every waking thought is related
to homeschooling.
Stop! Relax! Homeschooling is a lifestyle, not
a business. Mentally hear the school bell ring
and close the door on the school day at a
FAMILY ENCOURAGEMENT
10 MISTAKES
Homeschoolers MakeBY MARCIA WASHBURN
Mistake #4: Comparing
ourselves, our children, and
our homeschools with others
God makes each person and each family unique.
When we compare ourselves with others, we invite
discouragement and discontentment. God has a
unique life message for each individual and each
family to communicate to the world. No one else can
communicate that message in quite the same way or
to the same people pocket that you can. If you copy
someone else, the very best you can hope to be is a
second-rate version of them. Don’t settle for second
best. You are a valued and necessary part of the Body
of Christ. Seek to be exactly the person God created
you to be. Run your own race, not someone else’s.
Mistake #5: Fearing that
we aren’t good enough
Many things cause fear in the hearts of
homeschoolers: fear that we aren’t doing enough,
fear that our kids won’t turn out “right” (whatever
that means), fear that others will realize that we
aren’t perfect parents. These fears lead us to apply
unnecessary pressure on ourselves and on our
children. Your children won’t suffer if they don’t do
every single exercise or read every single page in
every single textbook. They won’t be scarred for
life if they don’t get to participate in every single
co-op class or field trip. And they won’t be failures
if you don’t produce exciting lesson plans for

be surprised that God requires heads of households
do all they can to lead their families in worshiping
the living God. As Joshua declared, “As for me and
my house, we will serve the LORD” (Josh. 24:15).
This word serve is translated as worship many times
in Scripture.
Family worship will require some preparation. You
should pray for God’s blessing upon that worship.
Have your Bibles ready and a Scripture passage
selected. Catechisms and books of questions and
answers for children are very helpful. Sometimes
you might read through a book like John Bunyan’s
Pilgrim’s Progress or Holy War and discuss it
together. Choose some psalms and hymns that are
easy to sing. Pick a place to gather, such as the
supper table or living room. Set the times for family
When my parents commemorated their 50th anniversary, all five of
us children decided to express thanks to our father and mother for
one thing without consulting each other. Remarkably, all five of us thanked our mother for her prayers
and all five us thanked our father for his leadership of our Sunday evening family worship. My brother said, “Dad, the oldest memory I have is of tears streaming
down your face as you taught us from Pilgrim’s Progress on Sunday evenings how the Holy Spirit leads believers. At the age of three God used you in family
worship to convict me that Christianity was real. No matter how far I went astray in later years, I could never seriously question the reality of Christianity, and I
want to thank you for that.”
worship, ordinarily at breakfast and supper but as
it fits your family’s needs. Whatever times you set,
carefully guard those times like a precious jewel.
During family worship, aim for brevity. Don’t
provoke your children. If you worship twice a day,
try ten minutes in the morning and twenty-five in the
evening. Be consistent. It is better to have twenty
minutes of family worship every day than to try for
extended periods on fewer days—say forty-five
minutes on Monday, then skipping Tuesday.
Don’t indulge excuses to avoid family worship. If
you are tired, deny yourself out of love for God and
your family. Even if you lost your temper a half-hour
before family worship time, don’t neglect it out of
false humility. Instead, begin family worship by
confessing your sins to your family and seeking
FAMILY ENCOURAGEMENT
How to Do FAMILY
WORSHIP(Part One)BY JOEL R. BEEKE
Christians have long recognized that God often
uses family worship to bring reformation and
revival to the church. For example, the 1677
church covenant of the Puritan congregation
in Dorchester, Massachusetts, included the
commitment “to reform our families, engaging
ourselves to a conscientious care to set before
us and to maintain the worship of God in them;
and to walk in our houses with perfect hearts
in a faithful discharge of all domestic duties,
educating, instructing, and charging our
children and households to keep the ways of
the Lord.”
Given the importance of family worship as
a potent force in winning untold millions to
gospel truth throughout the ages, we ought not

their forgiveness in the presence of God. As A.
W. Pink said, “It is not the sins of a Christian, but
his unconfessed sins, which choke the channel of
blessing and cause so many to miss God’s best.”
Lead family worship with a firm, fatherly hand and a
soft, penitent heart. Speak with hopeful solemnity.
Talk naturally yet reverently during this time, using
the tone you would use when speaking to a deeply
respected friend about a serious matter. Expect
great things from a great covenant-keeping God.
According to Scripture, God should be served in
special acts of worship in families today in the
following three ways.
DAILY INSTRUCTION
IN THE WORD OF GOD
God should be worshiped by daily reading and
instruction from His Word. Through questions,
answers, and instructions, parents and children are
to daily interact with each other about sacred truth.
As Deuteronomy 6:6–7 says, “And these words,
which I command thee this day, shall be in thine
heart: and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy
children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in
thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and
when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”
When those words were first written, most believers
did not have access to a precious scroll of Holy
Scripture. They had to teach their children from
passages of Scripture which they heard and
memorized! In this age most believers have the
tremendous privilege of having the Bible in their
own native language. Let’s take full advantage of
this privilege by reading the Bible together. When
reading and teaching the Bible as a family, consider
these suggestions.
1. Have a reading plan. Read ten or twenty
verses from the Old Testament in the morning
and ten to twenty from the New Testament in the
evening. Or read a series of parables, miracles, or
historical portions. Just be sure to read the entire
Bible over a period of time. As J.C. Ryle said, “Fill
their minds with Scripture. Let the Word dwell in
them richly. Give them the Bible, the whole Bible,
even while they are young.”
2. Involve the family. Every family member who
can read should have a Bible to follow along. Set
the tone by reading Scripture with expression, as
the living, “breathing” book it is. Assign various
portions to be read by your wife and your children.
Teach your children how to read articulately and
with expression. Don’t let them mumble or speed
ahead. Teach them to read with reverence. Provide
a brief word of explanation throughout the reading,
according to the needs of the younger children.
3. Be plain in meaning. Ask your children if
they understand what you are reading. Be plain
in applying scriptural texts. The 1647 Church
of Scotland Directory for Family Worship wisely
teaches us that if a sin is rebuked in the Word,
then call the family to keep watch against it; if a
judgment is threatened, warn them of it; if a duty
is commanded, press it upon them; if a promise is
offered, then urge them to trust it and receive its
comfort.
4. Encourage family dialogue around God’s
Word in line with the Hebraic procedure
of household question and answer (cf. Ex.
12:26–27; 13:14–15). Especially encourage
teenagers to ask questions; draw them out. If you
don’t know the answers, tell them so, and encourage
them to search for answers. Have one or more
good commentaries on hand, such as those by
John Calvin, Matthew Poole, and Matthew Henry.
Remember, if you don’t provide answers for your
children, they will get them elsewhere—and often
those will be wrong answers.
5. Be pure in doctrine. Titus 2:7 says, “In all
things showing thyself a pattern of good works: in
doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity.”
Don’t abandon doctrinal precision when teaching
young children; aim for simplicity and soundness.
6. Be relevant in application. Don’t be afraid
to share your experiences when appropriate,
but do that simply and concisely. Use concrete
illustrations. Ideally, tie together biblical instruction
with what you recently heard in sermons.
7. Be affectionate in manner. Proverbs
continually uses the phrase “my son”, showing the
warmth, love, and urgency in the teachings of a
God-fearing father. When you must administer the
wounds of a friendly father to your children, do that
with heartfelt love. Tell them you must convey the
whole counsel of God because you can’t bear the
thought of spending eternity apart from them. My
father often said to us, with tears: “Children, I can-
not miss any of you in heaven.” Tell your children:
“We will allow you every privilege an open Bible will
allow us to give you—but if we say no to you, you
must know that flows out of our love.” As Ryle said,
“Love is one grand secret of successful training.
Soul love is the soul of all love.”
8. Require attention. Proverbs 4:1 says, “Hear,
ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend
to know understanding.” Fathers and mothers have
important truths to convey. You must demand a
hearing for God’s truths in your home. That may
involve repeated statements at the beginning like
these: “Sit up, son, and look at me when I’m talking.
We’re talking about God’s Word, and God deserves
to be heard.” Don’t allow children to leave their seats
during family worship.
Editor’s Note: Part Two of this article will be in
the next Update and cover Daily Prayer before the
Throne of God and Daily Singing the Praise of God.

Little did I know two years ago that CHEC’s ministry

would become another way that I needed the
help of this supportive community of Christian

unexpectedly on June 2, 2013 the good and gracious

our 11 children, home to Heaven. What a shock! And
so, I became a single parent with five minor children
at home and a family economy to manage.
The first fall of my widowhood, CHEC advised me
that I could receive financial help with curriculum to

by a lovely evening. A beautifully prepared meal, the
fellowship of other widows whom I had never before

and Bill Roach, President of CHEC enriched the
evening. The night concluded with a group photo

parents — but buoyed up by the caring network of
families who are the tireless CHEC volunteers.
For nearly two decades our family has been
involved with Christian Home Educators

ministry of CHEC has also come alongside
our family in many ways through our season
of home education: 1) equipping us to begin
homeschooling when we were newbies; 2)
informing us of the many options for higher
education as our teens reached high school
and beyond; 3) encouraging us to disciple
our children as the most important aspect of
homeschooling; and now 4) sustaining my
ability to homeschool as a widow.

the test, but I didn’t really like the test. Without the
help of my praying friends, church, and CHEC, my
test would have seemed insurmountable. Now, I am
being sustained by the same people and organiza-
tion in which I invested my time and talents over
the years. CHEC is by my side and I can finish with
confidence the marathon set before me of successfully
completing my family’s homeschool journey. I still
have five children to graduate, and seven years to
go, but I can proceed with confidence because of
the support net of prayers, gifts, and love.
I pray you never have to use the Casterline Fund for
yourself, but I want you to know how important it
is to women like me. I want to personally thank all
those who have contributed over the years, and to
the many families who will faithfully support this
important CHEC ministry in the future.
I will have the honor of presenting a workshop for
widows at the Family Conference this June. CHEC
considers the term ‘widow’ to include any single
woman homeschooling her children; whether
through death, divorce, or abandonment, widows
and their children have suffered significant trauma
in their lives. Therefore, they need special attention
to not just survive, but thrive. If you know any moms
in this situation, be sure to encourage them to attend
the conference to hear the wide variety of speakers.
Editor’s Note: Shari wrote a five generation family
memoir recounting God’s faithfulness throughout
the generations as her grief therapy following her
husband’s death. What started out as a simple
project of honoring and remembering, became —
with the Lord’s guidance and direction — a new
stream of income for her in her family economy
as a writer and public speaker. For more
information, please check out her website:
www.StretchedYetUnbrokenBook.com.
Shari Howard McMinn is mother to 11,
a homemaker, farmwife, public speaker and author.
She retired from her two-decade career as a
commercial Interior Designer in order to homeschool
her children and to spend more time with her
beloved husband, Cary. Simultaneously, the family
left their urban life near downtown Denver, Colorado,
and purchased a remote farm to benefit from an
agrarian lifestyle. Shari was widowed unexpectedly
in June of 2013, with five minor children still at home
and a farm to manage. She also maintains other
websites, such as www.BlessedCreekFarm.com.

group meeting following the conference, you may
want to share your experiences (what you learned,
how you benefitted from attending, and the
camaraderie you enjoyed). It may encourage
others to attend the following year!
You and your spouse may want to attend a conference
together. Conventions are eye openers, especially
for some homeschool dads(!), as they have the
opportunity to witness the myriad of options and be
exposed to the information overload that can be part
of a homeschool conference. Spouses then have
the opportunity to discuss things they’ve seen and
heard, and it facilitates the decision-making process
as homeschool plans are fleshed out for the next
school year.
I think I’m set. I’ll just order my curriculum
online and be done with it. Don’t get us wrong—
we love the convenience of internet shopping, but
there’s just something to be said about actually
seeing the materials. Visiting exhibitor booths allow
you to do comparison shopping, and vendors are
equipped to point out practical ways to use their
resources. At many conferences, vendors present
workshops providing helpful advice that will save
you hours in trying to figure out on your own how
best to utilize the materials. You’ll be relieved from
the headache of learning how parts of the curriculum
fit together, so that you can expend the majority of
your time actually teaching the material.
Dear Friends,
We encourage you to attend a homeschool
convention near you, and we’d like to address
some common misconceptions about confer-
ences that may persuade you to think again.
It’s too much of a hassle to attend—
I’m already burned out with all things
related to homeschooling!
We truly understand. We are former
homeschool moms who vividly remember
the days of juggling many responsibilities.
However, the earlier you make plans to attend
a conference, the easier it will be to actually
get there. Many conferences offer early bird
registration with great discounts. The best
and nearest hotel accommodations to the
convention generally go quickly, so jump on
the discounted block room rates. Staying near
the conference saves time and is convenient
to all of the action.
A homeschool parent may enjoy going to the
convention alone and using the off hours as
a respite to quietly plan, pray, and relax away
from home responsibilities. On the other hand,
sometimes it’s fun to attend the conference
with another mom or several friends in order
to share travel expenses, and also have a
sounding board as you contemplate
curriculum choices.
If you are part of a support group, why don’t
you consider all going together? At the support

Conferences:
HERE WE GO!BY BECKY COOKE AND DIANE KUMMER
To tell you the truth, I typically come home
from a conference discouraged that my
teen and I don’t measure up. Yikes! That’s
not how it’s supposed to work. But, unfortunately,
in some cases it’s true. Homeschool conference
planners and speakers walk a tightrope. They want
to encourage parents by showcasing the achieve-
ments of homeschool students who are doing well.
That’s commendable. However, hearing about the
over-achievers can cause parents whose teens are
not doing so well, to feel guilty, burdened, and …
hopeless.
Succumbing to comparison is an easy thing to do
when attending a conference, but there are steps
you can take to guard against it. First, pray. Ask
the Lord to help you absorb information that will
encourage you, and to block out knowledge that’s
not helpful. Second, have a willing heart that desires
to learn from others, so that you can incorporate
a speaker’s good ideas into your homeschool. No one
is meant to incorporate all (or even most) of the
suggestions that a speaker recommends. You should
feel very comfortable incorporating only those options
or advice that makes sense for your family. Third,
rejoice with those who rejoice, and realize that you
are only seeing the tip of the iceberg when a speaker
shares about his or her homeschool or children.
Don’t believe for a second that everyone else at the
conference is a perfect homeschool parent, has
ideal children, and homeschools flawlessly. It’s a

Hi Mike,
I just wanted to give you an update on how the internship program for the Wirtjes Agency is going. It is hard to believe that it has been 16 months
since our first intern arrived.
It has been a pleasure having Zach with us; he has learned a lot and so have we! He has completed his property, casualty, life, health, and crop
insurance licenses and has a good grasp on the insurance industry. Our second intern, Nathaniel, has been with us for 4 months now, and has
already completed his property and casualty licenses. Our internship has covered everything from spiritual growth, to insurance, to how to dress
appropriately in business settings. One of the highlights of the past year (for me at least) was taking our interns to a high end men’s clothing shop
where they received some tips and advice on dressing well, were fitted, and added some nice business clothing to their wardrobes.
I will admit, the internship has been harder than I suspected purely from the standpoint that the thought of Zach leaving in just a few months is quite
difficult for us. He has become a part of our family in so many ways. We are excited for him and what the Lord has in store, but he will be greatly
missed. Below is a quote from him on his experience with the internship.
“I am very thankful to have had the opportunity to participate in the internship at Wirtjes Agency with Luke and Alicia. Over the past 16 months I have
learned an immense amount about the insurance industry and running an insurance agency. During that time the Lord has done great works in my
personal life. I am truly blessed to have been able to take part in this opportunity.” — Zach
We are ready to open applications for a new intern who would start in October.
Thank you so much for your vision and continued work in creating the AME program. We have been blessed through your efforts and are thankful for
how the Lord is using it across the nation. It has been a blessing to be a part of such a great program.
Sincerely,
Alicia Glendenning
And the reply from Mike Cheney, Director of AME
Luke and Alicia, thank you for your support of the ideals of the AME program and, more importantly, for your investment of time into the lives of the
young men you are training up. May God continue to bless your family and the Wirtjes Agency.
Mike and his wife, Roxie, are blessed with 2 children, Annie and Corey, whom they have home educated since birth. The family is engaged in several
ventures involving real estate investment, brokerage, property management, media production and internet retailing. They also sell fresh products from
their small family farm. They served as the CHEC Conference Coordinators from 2001-2012.
In thinking about what to share about the progress of AME during the past few months, it occurred to me that I could not
convey an update any better than by sharing this letter we received recently.
Luke and Alicia have graduated one intern from the their family insurance business in Illinois, are in the midst of training the second and are now seeking
a third one. Here is their story.

RELATIONSHIPS
Let’s face it, homeschooling is hard. We know it and
often when we reach our wit’s end, we feel like just
throwing in the towel. After all, wouldn’t it just be
easier to just stop going against the grain, put the
kiddos back into public school and get on with life?
The siren song of the mainstream beckons us all the
time and the question always lurks just over the
horizon — will we give in and give up?
In the end, what will drive us to keep going? Does
the promise of the potential of a lucrative ivy-league
scholarship? How about “bragging rights” about having
smart or well-behaved children? Do we pride ourselves
on our children’s academic prowess or their performance
at the latest spelling bee? We know that, often times,
the lure of these accolades is difficult to resist. After all,
doesn’t this allow us to prove to the world how
worthy an effort home education is after all?
Maybe our eyes are on the wrong prize. It may be
the case that our goals are not Jesus’ goals, and this
is what leads to our frustration or hopelessness.
Remember that Jesus Himself said:
Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate
and broad is the road that leads to destruction,
and many enter through it. But small is the gate
and narrow the road that leads to life, and only
a few find it. (Matt. 7:13, 14)
And the Apostle Paul reminds us:
Am I now trying to win the approval of human
beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please
people? If I were still trying to please people,
I would not be a servant of Christ. (Gal. 1:10)
How helpful is the reminder that our Master is Christ,
and that He is a kind and loving Master Who knows
what is best for us! In the midst of difficulty and
struggle, we know that we have a Friend we can turn to
for strength and understanding. He also reminds us that:
My yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
(Matt. 11:30)
Could it be that our difficulty is not because of a
burden that Christ has placed on us, but instead it is
because we are not seeking Him — His goals for us,
our kids, and our homeschools? Could it be that we are
seeking our own goals, our own glory, instead of His?
Maybe we should throw off the chains that bind us
and run toward Jesus.
Do you long for joy and peace in your home and your
homeschool? It seems like so many home educators
do. Often times, we feel like we are standing in the
midst of a storm raging around us and just need
some hope and encouragement to take that next step
forward. But what if, instead, you could see past the
storm, past the difficulties and the struggles in life,
and instead lead your family through them?
This year’s Rocky Mountain Super Conference on the
Family looks to come alongside you and your family
to give you that encouragement and strength — not
only for that next step, but to show you how to be that
hopeful leader for the next 1000 steps. Jesus tells us
that leadership can be found in serving those around
us (Luke 22:27) and, most importantly, serving Jesus.
This year’s event will look at how we as parents can
do just that: lead our homes by serving and become
“Tools in His Hands.”

on the area of SERVANT LEADERSHIP in the home.
PETER HECK opens the conference on Thursday morning looking at
America’s Deadly Obsession — ourselves. This session will explore the
ways in which selfishness taints our relationships, from marriage to the
ways in which we raise our children, and how we can find victory over
this compulsion.
Friday morning, Dr. R.C SPROUL, Jr. asks us to Follow the Leader.
Have we encouraged those who we lead to righteousness? Are we
willing and eager to forgive? By what standard do we judge our
leadership, by how well we lead, or by how well we follow?
Some say that God has given man two books, the Bible, and the book
of “nature.” During the Friday afternoon general session, the Institute
for Creation Research’s Dr.JASONLISLE shows why this view is dangerous
and is a distinguishing characteristic of many cults.
Saturday morning, TODD FRIEL looks at Joy in the Home through a
practical, Bible-focus, Gospel-centered approach to parenting.
Saturday afternoon, Dr. MARSHALL FOSTER wraps up the 2015
Rocky Mountain Super Conference on the Family by looking at our
time through the lens of history, and shows us why we should have
great optimism and hope for the future.

For more than twenty years, Samaritan Ministries’ members have
been sharing one another’s medical needs, without using health
insurance, through a Biblical model of community among believers.
Samaritan members share directly with each other and do not share
in abortions and other unbiblical practices.

ENCOMPASSING THE CONFERENCE
The Rocky Mountain Super Conference seeks
to be an encouragement to home educators —
no matter where they are in their homeschooling
journey. We hope you’ll be edified by workshops
in our five tracks:
Vision l Home Discipleship l Worldview
Encouragement l Relationships
Why do we educate at home? How does this fit into the larger picture of the
Christian life? Scripture teaches us that “where there is no vision, the people
perish” (Pr. 28:19). VISION is what inspires us to continue the journey to which
God has called every father and mother. It will help clarify why we are doing what
we do and the direction to get there.
The family was God’s design and His Word gives us the only sure light to direct
our steps. Families devoted to applying biblical principles will affect their churches,
communities, governments, and the course of future generations. These
workshops will focus on HOME DISCIPLESHIP, the most powerful tool to build
God-glorifying homes.
We all must interact with the world every day. There are some strong cultural
currents pulling Christians away. How do we challenge these ideas? To battle
against the world, the flesh, and the devil, we must first learn to think like Christians.
These workshops help parents challenge their kids to see the world
through Christian eyes, to think with a Christian mind, to develop a
Christian WORLDVIEW.
It’s late at night, and you are up finishing the dishes before moving a load of
laundry over to the dryer. You’ve spent your day with your children, educating
them in everything from Bible to Home Economics, while they bellyached about
their brother and whined how they did not want to learn Latin. Just when you
think you are done for the day and headed to bed your oldest comes in to tell you
that your youngest just got sick all over his bed. You put your head in your hands,
knowing you will be up all night, realizing you have no clue how you will do it all
again tomorrow! What you need is ENCOURAGEMENT — to keep going, to
hear again that you are doing the right thing for your children, and that it will all
work out because you are obeying the Lord. Come to these workshops and be
encouraged to stay in the battle, fighting the good fight.
How we relate to one another is a crucial part of a successful home school.
Parents need to keep their children’s hearts to train them in the character
they will need for the rest of their lives. Children need to honor their parents.
Husbands are called to love their wives as Christ loved the church. Wives are
called to submit to their husbands in all things. What do all of these have in
common? They are all the RELATIONSHIPS that God has ordained for the
family. Workshops in this track help clarify the importance of these relationships
to the glory of God.

We understand that many home educating families are on tight budgets. CHEC
sympathizes with these situations and provides you with an opportunity to save
money. Volunteers earn “vouchers” toward their annual conference registration
fees. Vouchers earned by working before and during the conference may only
be applied to the current conference for your immediate family. If you would
like to volunteer, please fill out and submit a Volunteer Interest Form located at
tinyurl.com/chec-volunteer.
A conference scholarship fund has been provided by the generous donations
of other homeschooling families. Partial scholarships may be available for
those who qualify. Please send an email to
registrationconf@chec.org to receive a Scholarship Request Application Packet.
REGISTRATION PACKETS
All registration packets can be picked up from the Registration Booth in the
Denver Mart beginning at 7:30am on June 18th. Please bring your registration
confirmation with you.
BRING THE WHOLE FAMILY
FOR ONE LOW PRICE!
Now, everyone in your family can attend the Rocky Mountain
Super Conference on the Family. Children of any age living in
your home are welcome and you can bring them all for one low
price. Purchase a FAMILY PASS and bring the whole family to
this year’s event for just $30 more! This will include any
children living in your home and their grandparents.
FOOD
The Mart provides a café, coffee and snack carts, and vending machines at the
facility (all are cash only). For your convenience, there is also an ATM on-site.
There are also several fast food restaurants located within walking distance.
The Denver Mart’s regulations state that no outside food or drinks
are allowed.
BRING THE CONFERENCE HOME!
Given the outstanding lineup of speakers and topics, you probably will not get
to attend every workshop that interests you. But, don’t fret — you can bring the
encouragement you’ll get at this year’s conference home with you. Recordings
of workshops will be available on-site and online after the conference at rmscf.com.
New this year! Video recordings of all workshop sessions will be
available for sale. Due to contractual obligations personal audio and
videotaping at the conference is prohibited.
