Fashion photography is a genre focused on showcasing clothing and accessories. It is commonly used for advertisements and fashion magazines. Over time, fashion photography developed its own aesthetic of improving fashions through exotic locations and accessories. The earliest popular form of photography was the daguerreotype in the 1830s, but it was not suitable for mass production. In 1856, one of the first fashion photographs was published showing the Countess diCastiglion in her official court garb. In the early 20th century, advances in printing allowed fashion photos to be featured in magazines, helping the genre emerge. Richard Avedon further transformed fashion photography in the post-World War II era with his modern images of women.
