g a r d en d e s i g n is the future of the home: a
new era in which the boundary between indoors and outdoors is
erased, and nature is an integral part of sophisticated design. Every
issue is a meeting place for a new generation of professionals and
enthusiasts from all over the world who have an intimate connection
to the natural environment and a distinctive sense of style. Garden
Design looks at the home not as a mere showcase for material things,
but as an ever-changing expression of the people who live in it.

the motivation they need to start a new

fabric, and wallpaper as much as plants,
trees, and landscaping.
entertaining

on how to make their outdoor space
the perfect setting for dinner parties,

profile
Behind all great gardens are fascinating
personalities, and this is where we tell
their stories, whether it’s a close up
look at a groundbreaking sustainable
landscape pioneer or an intimate
portrait of an inspiring home gardener.
almanac
This is Garden Design’s community
forum, a space in which readers can
share pictures of their gardens, convey
garden news from wherever they
happen to live, seek advice (and give it),
and offer lively first-person anecdotes
on the pleasures of gardening.
improving
Here, we provide hands-on tips and
tools for upgrading and maintaining
the bones of the home and garden:
architectural innovations, new
technologies, and breakthroughs in
sustainable hardscaping.
muse
Our back page is devoted to a single,
evocative image or thought that
epitomizes the wise old axiom
“Nature is the muse of all gardeners.”

JAMES OSELAND Editorial Director James Oseland has been the editorial director
of Garden Design since 2010 and the editor-in-chief of SAVEUR since 2006. During his time at
SAVEUR, the magazine won an ASME for best single-topic issue and more than 10 James Beard
Awards, among many other accolades. Prior to his time at Garden Design and Saveur, he was an
editor at Vogue, Organic Style, and Mademoiselle. In 2006 his book, Cradle of Flavor: Home Cooking
from the Spice Islands of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, was published; it went on to win awards
from the James Beard Foundation and the International Association of Culinary Professionals and
was named one of the best books of that year by Time Asia, The New York Times, and Good Morning
America. Oseland has appeared extensively on American and European television, including The
Today Show and Bravo’s Top Chef Masters, where he appears as a weekly judge; he is also a frequent
guest on radio programs, including The Splendid Table. He is a lifelong, avid (some would say
obsessive!) home gardener.
WILLIAM L. HAMILTON Editor-in-Chief William L. Hamilton comes to Garden Design from ten years as a reporter and
editor at The New York Times, where he covered style, design, and lifestyle trends. Prior to The Times, Hamilton was the editor-at-large at
Martha Stewart Living and an editor at Elle Décor, Metropolitan Home, and Art & Antiques
magazines. He was also publications editor at Hart Howerton, an international architecture
and landscape architecture firm. Hamilton is the author of Shaken and Stirred, a 2004
HarperCollins book based on his cocktail columns in The New York Times, and Alone
Together, a true story of a couple’s 40-year sojourn on a remote Maine island, published by
Boxed Books in 2007. An urban farmer, Hamilton spends his downtime in his garden in the
heart of Astoria, Queens, and travels by truck, a 1966 Ford F100 long-bed pickup. He also
collects classic modernist furniture. The truck comes in handy for moving sofas.
