STUDENT FEEDBACK: Student Feedback was excellent overall, and
project seen as good industry preparation
“I have learnt so much. The interactive PDF for the Bookworks
was a challenge but I did it and have submitted. It is such an
awesome tool to have learnt for the future. First year of Uni
over, looking forward to the break but also looking forward to
coming back! “ (KR)
Over 100 students (first-year BDes Graphics) produced books for
the iBooks library on iPhone/iPads. Students could check their
ebooks on their smart phones. 55 of 89 students giving (SEPS)
paper feedback wanted to continue the digital literacy initiative
with iPads/mobile technologies in the second year. More students
are likely to have iPads/smart phones as each year passes.

Shape-shifting: traditional book arts and 21st century multimodal bookworks
ABSTRACT [Draft] : Lesley Kaiser for TEXT journal, Oct 2013
Our relationship to books is mutating dramatically, not just for readers and
writers, but also for those who design and produce books. This research explores
how old and new technologies might be utilised in the creation of multimodal
books that combine prized aspects of printed hand-bound books with the
enhanced communication and reading potential of e-publications. A bookwork
project was set in the first year of the Bachelor of Design (Graphics) programme
at AUT University. Emerging theoretical contexts informed research into current
issues, theory and formats, and students presented their findings as well-
designed bookworks utilising both text and image. For assessment, they were
required to design the content for both print and to be read on an iPad/iPhone
as an interactive PDF or EPUB. Recorded lectures and other online resources
resulted in deeper student engagement with both physical and digital spaces.
The traditional bindery was digitally enhanced to create a space for cyber
learning in a practical workshop. Students were empowered with increased
digital literacy and a multimodal fluency that prepares them for their future
professional and personal lives as designers and creators. This is an important
direction in design education as the book morphs into the future.

Ongoing Objectives of the Project
• Industry-prepared graduates: Graphics Designers are now
being expected to design for hardcopy print but also provide
an e-publishing component. Our students will need to be able
to design for iPad/e-reader format by the time they graduate
• iFlaneur: discover tangential advantages of ipads in teaching
and research: spontaneous video or sound recording device
for creative projects, lectures, notetaking, cloud access,
accessing online resources, QR code finding, social media
engagement etc.
• Explore apps for teaching/ and in research
Introducing epublication component [ipad/iphones] in
traditional bookarts, artists books, and contextual studies.
Curricuum development
Planning for Future
• Need for building e-publishing and social media
components into degree in order to meet changing
graduate profile.
• Booklab concept: exploration of liminal space between
print and digital publishing
• Staff need technical computer expertise in e-publication
to develop the area

  • 45. STUDENT FEEDBACK: Student Feedback was excellent overall, and project seen as good industry preparation “I have learnt so much. The interactive PDF for the Bookworks was a challenge but I did it and have submitted. It is such an awesome tool to have learnt for the future. First year of Uni over, looking forward to the break but also looking forward to coming back! “ (KR) Over 100 students (first-year BDes Graphics) produced books for the iBooks library on iPhone/iPads. Students could check their ebooks on their smart phones. 55 of 89 students giving (SEPS) paper feedback wanted to continue the digital literacy initiative with iPads/mobile technologies in the second year. More students are likely to have iPads/smart phones as each year passes.

Shape-shifting: traditional book arts and 21st century multimodal bookworks ABSTRACT [Draft] : Lesley Kaiser for TEXT journal, Oct 2013 Our relationship to books is mutating dramatically, not just for readers and writers, but also for those who design and produce books. This research explores how old and new technologies might be utilised in the creation of multimodal books that combine prized aspects of printed hand-bound books with the enhanced communication and reading potential of e-publications. A bookwork project was set in the first year of the Bachelor of Design (Graphics) programme at AUT University. Emerging theoretical contexts informed research into current issues, theory and formats, and students presented their findings as well- designed bookworks utilising both text and image. For assessment, they were required to design the content for both print and to be read on an iPad/iPhone as an interactive PDF or EPUB. Recorded lectures and other online resources resulted in deeper student engagement with both physical and digital spaces. The traditional bindery was digitally enhanced to create a space for cyber learning in a practical workshop. Students were empowered with increased digital literacy and a multimodal fluency that prepares them for their future professional and personal lives as designers and creators.   • 54. Ongoing Objectives of the Project • Industry-prepared graduates: Graphics Designers are now being expected to design for hardcopy print but also provide an e-publishing component. Our students will need to be able to design for iPad/e-reader format by the time they graduate • iFlaneur: discover tangential advantages of ipads in teaching and research: spontaneous video or sound recording device for creative projects, lectures, notetaking, cloud access, accessing online resources, QR code finding, social media engagement etc. • Explore apps for teaching/ and in research Introducing epublication component [ipad/iphones] in traditional bookarts, artists books, and contextual studies.
