and this is something I started to realize when working in my role as K-5 elem computer teacher in 4 buildings- first started with wikispaces, social media\nBernajean Porter-  using technology begins with being literate with the tools, the the tools become adaptive (using a new technology to do an old thing), then it becomes transformative, where you use the new technology to do a new thing. \n
my journey... how people get started forming the connections. this was my realization that people who shared interests and ideas could form strong communities of learners.\n

will richardson story, the move to transparency\n
for yourself... \nwill richardson blogging story\n
Our students are building digital footprints and we have to help make sure they’re positive. It’s happening NOW. Stop worrying about 5-10 yrs from now. We need to help our kids NOW. \nHow many of you have Googled yourself? You want to make sure what’s coming up on that search is what you want to define you. We have to model this.\n\n
My personal journey.\nTwitter since Pete&C --> edchat two years ago-->blogging -->commenting --> Connected Principals -->presenting and sharing\n

So, for your school... 4 scaffolding stages to mastering the connected world: share, cooperate (connect), collaborate, collective action\nHere Comes Everybody Cognitive Surplus\n
\n
The term Social Media refers to the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into an interactive dialogue.\n
Modeling for my teachers - here is the effect of my organizational efficiency - the social media tools listed there \nstarted simply- daily update emails; moved to the wiki where we house everything- think about simple communications ; amped up communication with parents \nETC this year - share story of reading conference work \nmeeting info summaries to avoid meetings\n\n
google docs - presentations\nPrezis \nblog writing \nLittle Bird Tales\nStorybird - look at Kerry’s and comment\n\n
\n
authentic voices\n
so many tools, make it meaningful for learning\n
Getting teachers there - PD needs. \nRefer to ISTE Nets for Teachers. \n\n
We don’t want our teachers working in isolation behind closed doors. We’re on PLC kicks and collaboration and planning and such. Let’s work to get them connected with one another and with the world. Technology can help us do this. Start small... google docs, Diigo, etc. \n\nInitial trepidations: \n-I dont have the time\n-No one wants to hear what I have to say \n-What if someone I work with reads this!? \n
“Business structures founded on command and control, automation and process are giving way to structures that are less hierarchical and more dynamic, designed to engage people’s hearts and minds to make a difference in the world. ” Jane Hart, Founder and CEO of the Centre for Learning & Performance Technologies, and a Social Workplace Consultant.  \nIt needs to move from a “Command and Control” approach to one that I call “Encourage and Engage”.\nthe roles of the admin, teacher, and student are changing as result. \n
\n
\nInsert PD slide-  a screen cap of our inservice schedule, ETC blog, etc.\n\nProfessional development that’s been beneficial for us\nautonomy, fed-ex day, innovation day - autonomy, mastery, purpose, drive\n\nElementary Tech Cohort descriptions - the most successful day was when three people came back to report on what they learned at ISTE. If teachers find it valuable in that practice, \n\n
What you’ll find when you empower teachers is that they’ll start to take matters into their own hands. Developed and presented this family blogging night, grade 2 teachers. \n
Building relationships with stakeholders and face-to-face interactions should be paramount; use digital communications to supplement and enhance the learning experience\n
Modeling as the administrator\n Providing time and resources - consider fed-ex days and free time and tech workshops, peer sharing, peer leaders at inservices, etc.\n Develop a strong partnership with tech to make sure your building’s needs are met\n Expect failure, support growth \n Train parents, and then train them again\n
I’d love to show you some of our communications more in depth or explore any tools of interest with you \n
