Friends are like Diamonds
by: Florita R. Matic
You and I do need friends
The right persons whom we can depend on
Like rocks that stood mightier
With strength that will never end.
In moments when we go astray
Friends are there to stay
Like roads that lead the way
Real friends will never leave our way.
True friends shine like precious gems

of her voice. The whole Barangay Malinis could hear her. But not even the
shadow of Anette appeared. “I wonder where my daughter has gone again,”
she muttered helplessly.
It had always been like this. Anette had the habit of playing around until
dusk. She didn’t want to go home until everyone else had gone home ahead of
her. Playing was all that mattered to her. She would skip meals just so she
could play all day long.
She even didn’t mind if she failed to take a bath.
“Mother, let’s eat, please? I am very hungry,” pleaded Anette one time.
She went straight to the table. “Wait! Better wash your hands first, you’re so
dirty!” warned Aling Sion.
Instead of obeying her mother, Anette continued eating without even
washing her very dirty hands. After eating, she went out again to play despite
the fact that it was already late. She looked for her playmates again.

The Giant Bell of Binalatongan
Retold by Lilibeth A. Magtang
Once upon a time, in a town called Binalatongan, an old church
stood with a gigantic bell. Not one, but ten people would pull the rope to ring
it. When it rings, pregnant women would suffer from miscarriage due to its
very loud and vibrating sound. It reverberates so loudly that even the earth
would shake. When the new church was built, the people decided to transfer
the bell from the old to the newly built church.
However, this wasn’t easy to do. They had to cross a river before
they could reach the new church. Besides, the bell was too big that not a
hundred bulls could carry it. Even the biggest and strongest men helped but
they still found it difficult to move the bell and would retire helpless. When
they were half-way across the river, the church bell feel and sank into the
deepest portion of the river.
Never again did the people find it. Many would say that a beautiful
mermaid was guarding it. She was a very beautiful half woman, half fish
creature who sang so sweetly. However, many claimed that her melodious
voice brought danger to fearless community people who would come to look
for the bell. Whoever would attempt to get it would get drowned.
