2. • With our media products our group; Ancient Moon Productions made
a decision to use most of the horror conventions as this can be very
useful to the audience when viewing our finished products, it allows
them to guess and make a judgment of the trailer as it also allows
them to predict what genre it is.
• Some of the many horror conventions we used were the narrative
structure, props (costumes and makeup), eerie music, jump scares
and an isolated location. We tried to use and include as many of
these as possible so it would easily be perceived as a horror trailer,
magazine and poster.
3. Sound affects and music
• I believe that having certain types of sounds and music can entice the
audience in as well as create tension and predictability for the genre
of the trailer. The music I chose was eerie and created a creepy feeling
for the film trailer giving the audience hints that the movie will most
likely be a horror. Professional film companies use this to create a
similar effect which could mean we have similar media products. We
also used and developed on the use of silence in our film trailer for
example, near the ending of this clip there is a jump scare but there is
a short period of time that is consumed by silence to create and add
tension. This silence was important to our film as it made the jump
scare frightening while adding tension throughout.
4. Location
• For our film trailer we decided to pick a suitable and convenient place
to engage the audience while creating a creepy atmosphere. We
decided to pick three different location these are, the dark drama
room, the field and a wooded part of the field. The field was used at
the start of the trailer to create the narrative structure to make the
audience think twice on the genre. Many professional film companies
produce their movies like this and include the narrative structure, this
is because the audience may find this more interesting as the film is
set as a normal day in life but suddenly changes.
5. Titles
• Throughout our film trailer there was titles reading occasional
phrases to attempt to entice the audience in and frighten them.
Although not all our titles were revolved around being scared as we
had some phrases and the tag line to make the audience question
what's happened in the film. We also chose to leave our film title at
the end making the film known so that the audience will always know
the name instead of reading the title then watching the trailer; for
this title we also decided to place it at the end after a jump scare so
the audience expects the film to be over but the jump scare appears
along with the title shortly after. Many professional horror films have
done this to create tension and a wow factor. For example the
avengers and guardians of the galaxy.
6. On this trailer…
I believe that Our Little Secret could be improved so we are able to achieve the
grade we aimed for. In my opinion I think a few of the shots and editing techniques
could’ve been better this is because we had to last minute film, this could’ve
improved the quality of the film making it better. I believe that during the planning
stages we did work to the best of our ability considering our group was spilt into
two. Although while working on the shooting we could’ve improved as we wasn’t
always organised; sometimes forgetting the probs. To improve our work I would’ve
planned thoroughly beforehand, as well as meeting certain deadlines. While
working on the posters I think we did considerably well this is because we made
three posters to choose from allowing us to pick the best one that also links well to
our magazine and trailer. When working on the magazines I also believe we worked
considerably well; this is because we made more than three copies for us to choose
from, but we also tried a range of techniques for example on Photoshop we
explored with all the different uses. Overall I think that we have done enough to
achieve our target grade as we have put in a mass amount of time to improve and
create media products we are proud to show.
7. Conventions of the poster
When creating the poster we aimed to use most of the conventions for
a horror poster these include, colours, layout, written text and unique
selling point. The reason for the dark use of colours on the poster is
because it make the genre readable for the audience. Continuity was
used when we thought about the lay out as we used a similar main
image in the centre; along with the title underneath making this layout
traditional. The written text has been carefully chosen, the credits have
been explained at the centre bottom along with a chosen font that is
clear for the audience to read. This poster is unique as the photograph
of the main character Mary has been taken by myself.
8. Conventions of the magazine
• Again while creating the magazine we tried to include as many
conventions for a magazine cover as possible. These includes colours;
on our magazine we used black, yellow, white and red. The reason for
this is because black shows the audience this film will be a horror, we
used white for the written text so it stands out and is readable, yellow
was used for the four star rating so it adds colour to the magazine but
it also draws the eye of the audience. Finally the red was used for
certain titles including Our Little Secret and the tag line ‘the secret is
out’ showing the importance of this written text. We also use
continuity as we used the same font for the poster and magazine.
Overall we are very pleased with the poster and magazine.
