Relationship Marketing: 21st Century Leadership
1. “If you can become the leader you ought to be on the inside, you
will be able to become the person you want on the outside.
People will want to follow you. And when that happens, you’ll be
able to tackle anything in this world.” John Maxwell

6. Several economic shifts causing the acceleration:
Technology – we won’t experience 100 years of progress but
20,000 years worth of progress
Knowledge – all the information created in 20o3 is done
EVERYDAY (i.e. iPhone)
Globalization – Competition and sales is global
Demographic majority – Millennial generation ( 1980s – 1990s)
largest to enter the work force
Will be ½ the work force in 4 years 2020 – holding majority of
leadership positions and 5 generations in one workforce
More women then men in the work place, stay at home DADs
have doubled
NOT YOUR DADDY’s Leadership!!
7. Leader is not a Manager or Boss
Leader – Models behaviour
Boss – tell you how to do it
Leader – Does it themselves first
Boss – Pushes to get it done
Leader – By example (in front)
Boss – Push to do it from the chair (life guard)
Leader – Let’s Go
Boss – You Go
“I no longer listen to what people say, I just watch what
they do” Winston Churchill
8. BIG PROBLEM we have:
75% of people consider themselves in the top 10% of the
leadership ability
“We tend to judge others by their behaviour, and ourselves by
our intentions” - Albert F Schliede
How do you get people YOU want to DO what you want?
Two Questions:
1. What attributes do you want?
2. Do you have them and demonstrate them?
Think about a person you would love to work with. That
person who you wish had sponsored you. Now ask yourself
why? Why did you choose them? Would you choose yourself to
sponsor you?
9. Action Step 1: Write down all the attributes that are important to you
and rate 1-10 (1 = not important to me, 10 = most important t me)
Attribute Importance 1 - 10
Passionate 10

If you want to attract people
with your top 12 attributes, you
must BE that person as well.
Rate yourself against these 12
attributes. You need to be really
honest (which is hard).
This will also help you find the
areas you can improve
on.
If you are really want to grow
as a leader, ask your team and
your mentors/leader to rate
You against the 12 attributes
as well.

16. To Become a Better
Leader
• Invest in yourself and your personal development
• Write down your goals and make a plan to
execute them
• Work deeper with fewer people
• Surround yourself with leaders that inspire you
• If there is someone who has what you want, look
at what they do and follow it
17. Work With Fewer People
Deeper
• More time with the RIGHT people
• Even if you don’t know the best people, you can
find them
• We DO NOT know enough people – but we can
find them
• EXAMPLE – My good friend Jonnah – started his 1st
year in college in Arizona.
• On a social scale he rates himself 3/10
