Universal Design for
Learning

Inspiration for UDL
The inspiration for UDL started in the
architectural world. When architects
designed buildings they always included
stairs. They quickly realized that this way
of entering the building did not work for
everyone.
Inspiration for UDL
They decided they would try to fix this after
designing the building; however this
caused many problems. Instead, they had
to design buildings with more options from
the beginning. The key is making sure all
can enter the building.
Inspiration for UDL
This is also true with education. All
students do not learn the same way.
Instead of trying to make them learn the
same way, educators should design their
lessons with alternatives for learning. The
original curriculum was the same for all.
We, as educators, need to change the
books so that they work for all students.
The materials need to change, not the
students.
Three Principles of UDL
 Provide Multiple Means of Representation
All students have a learning style.
Teachers should vary in their teaching
styles in order to meet the needs of all
students. Teachers should use a variety of
technology to engage students in learning.
There is not one way that all students
learn.
Three Principles of UDL
 Provide Multiple Means of Expression
Students can present their understanding
of the content in different ways.
Teachers should give options for
completing their work.
Three Principles of UDL
 Provide Multiple Means of Engagement
Students are motivated in different ways and it is
up to the teacher to get them engaged in
learning.
It is important for teachers to find what works
best for their students and what keeps them
focused. Teachers should continue to change
things in order to make learning fun and exciting
for students.
Role of Technology in UDL
Digital media allows the flexibility for UDL to be
successful. In a book, the information is fixed,
whereas with technology the information is
displayed in various ways. The ability to change
the information allows students to better grasp
the content based on their needs. For example;
we can show students things such as the
summary or background knowledge using
technology depending on students’ needs. It
can be different for all students.
Technology and UDL
Technology allows us to be diverse for all students.
Media can be like the teacher, using different
techniques for each student. The students can
also use technology to show what they know
about the content. Students can create a digital
story, record a podcast, or even create a
PowerPoint to display information. Most
importantly technology is a great way to
motivate students and get them excited about
learning. Technology will help teachers to create
lessons that will meet all learners’ needs.
Impact of UDL
Due to state testing, our teaching styles have
been limited. We know what skills we must
teach and we try to see what method is the
fastest to get the information to our students.
UDL will impact student learning in a positive
way.
Students will be engaged in learning which will
improve many areas. For example; students will
be less likely to be bored; therefore discipline
may not be as much of a problem.
Impact of UDL
Another way UDL will impact student
learning is that all students will be taught
in a way to meet their needs. As a result,
students will be more successful and feel
good about themselves.
UDL and Brain Research
Dr. David Rose states that the brain has
different parts in which information is
processed (Laureate, 2009). There are
three networks described with UDL and
brain research; recognition, strategic, and
affective.
Recognition
 Processing patterns, sites, smells, and
sounds.
 Teachers should teach in a variety of ways
to get information to students.
 Examples; use visual aids, images, and
audio to teach students the content.
Strategic
 Controls different functions of the body
 Processes the actions
 Teachers should provide many ways for
students to show what they know
Affective
 Focuses on emotions
 Teachers should think about this as they
plan their lessons
How does UDL support cultural, ethnic,
linguistic, and academic diversity?
UDL incorporates technology; therefore there are a
variety of tools to meet these needs. Also, the use of
the internet can connect students of different
backgrounds. This is also a great way for students of
different cultures to express themselves. The curriculum
is available to all students. Diverse classrooms contain
students of different linguistic backgrounds as well. ELL
students also need to be a priority when designing a
lesson. There are many different resources available
through technology. For elementary students using
pictures is a great way to help ELL students.

Instead of trying to make them learn the same way, educators should design their lessons with alternatives for learning. The original curriculum was the same for all. We, as educators, need to change the books so that they work for all students. The materials need to change, not the students.
  • 5. Three Principles of UDL  Provide Multiple Means of Representation All students have a learning style. Teachers should vary in their teaching styles in order to meet the needs of all students. Teachers should use a variety of technology to engage students in learning. There is not one way that all students learn.
  • 6. Three Principles of UDL  Provide Multiple Means of Expression Students can present their understanding of the content in different ways. Teachers should give options for completing their work.
  • 7. Three Principles of UDL  Provide Multiple Means of Engagement Students are motivated in different ways and it is up to the teacher to get them engaged in learning. It is important for teachers to find what works best for their students and what keeps them focused. Teachers should continue to change things in order to make learning fun and exciting for students.
  • 8. Role of Technology in UDL Digital media allows the flexibility for UDL to be successful. In a book, the information is fixed, whereas with technology the information is displayed in various ways. The ability to change the information allows students to better grasp the content based on their needs. For example; we can show students things such as the summary or background knowledge using technology depending on students’ needs. It can be different for all students.
  • 9. Technology and UDL Technology allows us to be diverse for all students. Media can be like the teacher, using different techniques for each student. The students can also use technology to show what they know about the content. Students can create a digital story, record a podcast, or even create a PowerPoint to display information. Most importantly technology is a great way to motivate students and get them excited about learning. Technology will help teachers to create lessons that will meet all learners’ needs.
  • 10. Impact of UDL Due to state testing, our teaching styles have been limited. We know what skills we must teach and we try to see what method is the fastest to get the information to our students. UDL will impact student learning in a positive way. Students will be engaged in learning which will improve many areas. For example; students will be less likely to be bored; therefore discipline may not be as much of a problem.
  • 11. Impact of UDL Another way UDL will impact student learning is that all students will be taught in a way to meet their needs. As a result, students will be more successful and feel good about themselves.
  • 12. UDL and Brain Research Dr. David Rose states that the brain has different parts in which information is processed (Laureate, 2009). There are three networks described with UDL and brain research; recognition, strategic, and affective.
  • 13. Recognition  Processing patterns, sites, smells, and sounds.  Teachers should teach in a variety of ways to get information to students.  Examples; use visual aids, images, and audio to teach students the content.
  • 14. Strategic  Controls different functions of the body  Processes the actions  Teachers should provide many ways for students to show what they know
  • 15. Affective  Focuses on emotions  Teachers should think about this as they plan their lessons
  • 16. How does UDL support cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and academic diversity? UDL incorporates technology; therefore there are a variety of tools to meet these needs. Also, the use of the internet can connect students of different backgrounds. This is also a great way for students of different cultures to express themselves. The curriculum is available to all students. Diverse classrooms contain students of different linguistic backgrounds as well. ELL students also need to be a priority when designing a lesson. There are many different resources available through technology. For elementary students using pictures is a great way to help ELL students.
