In order to develop a successful mobile application, it is necessary that the experience fits into people’s lives and solves real problems that they face. In Motorola Labs, we often finish exploratory ethnographic work with hundreds of design ideas for new mobile experiences. In order to identify those with the most value, we prototype key components of these ideas and test them with real people in their daily lives. I’ll talk about our strategies for rapid prototyping and field evaluation using examples from our work on the Ambient Mobile Communications program.

Vincent Puig, Centre Pompidou, France Yves-Marie L'Hour, Centre Pompidou, France Yves-Marie Haussone, Centre Pompidou, France Cécilia Jauniau, Centre Pompidou, France http://web.iri.centrepompidou.fr/traces To enrich the exhibition Traces du sacré (Centre Pompidou, May 7th - August 11th 2008), a new multimedia system has been experimented first to manage contradiction and debate on a controversial theme related to the spiritual dimension in modern and contemporary art. The debate was launched through audio interviews from the curators and a few contradictors from the intellectual and artistic scene accessible both on the audioguide and on a new type of collaborative web site. In the exhibition, visitors were able to record their own comments (vocal and drawings), using the multimedia guide or their mobile phone and afterwards to access them on Internet, modifying, annotating and indexing them, thanks to the software Lignes de temps, before sharing, publishing or podcasting them. This paper is a case study report summarizing a 6 months qualitative study performed with different type of public (professional, amateurs, non-amateurs) and consequently different type of practices and expectations in an unstable and experimental situation. In Media Arts, the creative process is often relegated to the realm of the unexplainable, shrouded in mystery and mysticism, yet there is a long tradition of attempts to more formally model artistic and creative processes. Philosophers have developed a a number of normative models for artistic creation, from Hegel's characterization of art as a path to self-consciousness to Dewey's representation of art as the sum of our intentions and experiences. I will discuss models (both classical and contemporary) of creative practice and experience and their potential application to new media arts and technology. These new models that connect the roles of creator and viewer/participant have redefined participatory design, art, and theater. This introduces a new role for a new breed of artist: to catalyze new ideas and foster creative collaboration across disciplines.
