Spring had begun and animals were emerging from hibernation. A red-winged blackbird flew over a meadow as turtles basked in the sun after spending winter in a pond. The scent of violets signaled that winter was over. A blackbird built her nest camouflaged in tall grass between stems. A hare hopped through new grass and sat by a stump waiting for her young.

She made her nest in the shape of an open cup. It was woven between stems of spring grass. The grass was still soggy from the spring rains. A hare, a kind of rabbit, hopped through the new grass. She sat near a stump wiating for her young to catch up to her. the warm sun was high in the sky. All the animals felt a little drowsy. The turtles napped. The rabbits slept cuddled up to their mother. Only the black bird did not nap. She was busy laying her eggs.
