1. Evaluation Question 3
What kind of media institution
might distribute your media
product and why?
Katy, Laura, Jordan and Kyle
2. What is distribution?
The role of the distributor is to get the film to the audience.
‘An entity that buys noncompeting products or product lines, warehouses
them, and resells them to retailers or direct to the end users or customers.
Most distributors provide strong manpower and cash support to the supplier
or manufacturer’s promotional efforts. They usually also provide a range of
services (such as product information, estimates, technical support, after-
sales services, credit) to their customer.’

3. An independent media institution is most likely to distribute our
media product because we are a independent and less well
known company who haven’t used such advanced equipment.
We were restricted into using a HD Flip Camera and a basic
Tripod. Therefore we would not be distributed by a major
distributor.
Jumper is a very similar film to ours however, it was created by a
major distributor so therefore we think the production company,
Metrodome would suit our film better as it is a independent
distributor as we are less well known.
4. Metrodome
Metrodome is a independent distributor who are a public limited
company based in London. The company has advertised over
300 films. We think that Metrodome would be an ideal
independent distributor for our film as they have had a lot of
experience with advertising other films. We personally feel that
Metrodome would be interested in our film as the films they
have been in partnership with before are a similar genre to ours.
5. Audiences
We personally feel that our film will generally appeal to the UK
audiences as the movie was filmed in the UK and we feel that
the viewers would be able to relate to the film more than
viewers outside of the UK. We do not think our film will be as
popular outside the UK simply on the basis because we are an
independent company who were restricted into using basic
equipment.
6. Marketing strategies
On the basis that our film is targeted at the younger generation,
we would use the access of Facebook and Twitter to advertise
our film. This is because our target audience use these network
sites, meaning they are more inclined to go watch our film.
7. Advantages/disadvantages of self distribution
Advantages to self-distribution
- By being self distributed you have full control and rights over your film, resulting in you
having a choice of where your film is shown.
- Additionally, another benefit of being self distributed is that you don't have to give a cut of
the money made from any sales from your film to a distributor.
Disadvantages to self distribution
- One of the disadvantages to self distribution is that it can be a full-time job itself and can
be very time consuming as you have to chase buyers and sales and filling in paperwork.
- Another disadvantage is that it may limit your options for sales as distributors have
established relationships with buyers and many buyers many only be interested in
packages of films.
- You need to be very legally savvy and make sure you’re not signing away rights to your film
that’ll prevent you from showing it elsewhere.
