Web 2.0
           What is it?
     What does it rely on?
    What impact has it had?
Examples of Web 2.0 applications?
Make notes whilst watching each of the
             following video clips:
David Gauntlett - Media and everyday life video

Xtra normal on David Gauntlett made by Reigate College students

Working with the people next to you, sum up Gauntlett’s ideas in one
                            sentence.

Wesch video - Web 2.0 ... The Machine is Us/ing Us

Working with the people next to you, sum up Wesch’s ideas in one
                           sentence.
Web 2.0 is:
interactive

web 2.0 is the advance of media technologies where people are no longer the consumers but
the creators.

US

people working together

An individualist anarchist approach to the internet, in which all contribute and take to create
web 2.0 independent from ownership or copyright.

web 2.0 is a shared community in which everyone can express their ideas and expand
Defining Web 2.0 – not easy!
‘Web 2.0 is a loosely defined intersection of web application features that
facilitate participatory information sharing, interoperability, user-centered
design,[1] and collaboration on the World Wide Web. A Web 2.0 site allows users
to interact and collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue as creators
(prosumers) of user-generated content in a virtual community, in contrast to
websites where users (consumers) are limited to the passive viewing of content
                              that was created for them.

Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites, blogs, wikis, video sharing
sites, hosted services, web applications, mashups and folksonomies.’

                                (Wikipedia, 2012)

See this link for a useful overview: http://www.techterms.com/definition/web20
What is needed in order for Web 2.0 to work /
What does Web 2.0 rely on?
people us

      an audience consumers

sharing internet
The impact of Web 2.0 on:
                Increased access e.g. wikileaks
Access Interactive - e.g. tweet celebs etc.
More Colaborative - many people working on same thing
                e.g. hit record.

Individuals can own media content not just institutions e.g.
   Ownership e.g. blogs, FB.

and power Issues of ownership, no central point of power.

Expanded creativity - individuals able to express using
                everyday, cheaper technology, etc.
   Creativity
Entering an era of creativity - more individuals making stuff
                e.g. YouTube.

                Crowdfunding e.g. Kickstarter

Anything else Challenges traditional media industry structure
Individual task
1. Create a blog post titled ‘Web 2.0’

2. Provide a definition of ‘Web 2.0’

3. Provide a definition of ‘Prosumer’

4. Give examples of Web 2.0 applications, including an explanation
for each of what makes them an example of Web 2.0.

5. Summarise Gauntlett’s ideas about Web 2.0

6. Summarise Wesch’s ideas about the Web

7. If you complete the above, do some research into the future of
   web technology.
