Lyrics

         Using the info panel
         in iTunes, we can add
         lyrics to songs or
         words to podcasts we
         have created that
         will appear on the
         iPod screen by a

But there is no camera...

“This will be an agree to disagree... I'm forever
delighted to have no-camera's in a middle school
environment. Yes they'd be wonderful for
capturing many things, on the other hand,
they're really not at all wonderful in the locker
room for capturing many things... It helps us a
great deal explaining to parents that this mobile
device is really an educational device, not a
recorder of misdeeds.”
Susan Wells Culbreth Middle School USA
Mobile email for teachers
    in busy schools...
Email is still a key communication tool in
our schools. Even today, it often
overlooked by busy teachers who haven’t
opened their notebook and logged into
their edumail account for a while..... This
problem is negated by the iPod touch
with email access, communications reign
again!
Understanding the netbook
   vs mobile question
‘A new class of mobile Internet devices
generally referred to as netbooks —
                     relatively inexpensive personal computers
What device would that run basic productivity soft ware and
access the Internet — are driven more by
you ask parents in institutional recommendations and
your school requirements than by personal choice, but
community to pay / are nonetheless making their way into the
contribute towards hands of students.’
when implementing (ANZ Horizon report 2009)
a 1-to-1 program?

                       CC: Interactive
                          question
‘One of the big advantages of the iPod Touch us that every kid
wants one. Carrying a laptop/netbook around is seen as nerdy
by many kids. Anything you have to unpack from a bag, wait to
boot up, open a program etc is also prohibitive with respect to
time. The iTouch is instant - and it's cool, which makes it
appealing to pretty much every kid.’
Deon Scanlon St Aloysius Tasmania, Australia
‘In terms of netbooks Vs iPod touches I believe they both have
huge educational potential - my concern with all this hardware
in schools including wireless net works, iPod touches, laptops
and so on is the pedagogical principles behind why, how, when
etc we are using them. It is all well and good to use netbooks
and or iPod touches in the classroom but do they really improve
student outcomes? I guess in our case time will tell. I guess our
vision is anytime, anywhere learning.’
Stacey Kelly DET rural and Distance Ed NSW Australia
‘Whilst some have criticised you here for going for the iPod over the
notebook, they perhaps haven't realised that a Touch in Australia costs half
the price of most netbooks (and yet provides about 90% of the
functionality).’

A Peterson Classroom 2.0

‘When we handed this tool to all staff in our middle school last August
management apps for the K-12 environment weren't yet written. Today there
are many to choose from. Again and again we believe we made the right
decision with the iPod touches for our school.’

Susan Wells Culbreth Middle School USA

‘I totally agree - its such a flexible easy to use platform. Cost of devices is still
a bit of a factor, but that will change. And yeah, there are more and more
proper management tools out now. Actually alot of Australian schools are
using Studywiz mobile, part of the Studywiz learning management system
and they really like it.’

Jonathon Nalder ADE Queensland Australia
‘Here in Maine we are 1-to-1 in grades 7-8 and many of our
9-12 high schools and my sense is that we will be migrating to
smaller devices in future rollouts. Maybe just letting students
that don't have their own, check them out of the library/media
center. Who knows?! Time will tell!’

Yes they'd be wonderful for capturing many things, on the other hand, they're really not at all wonderful in the locker room for capturing many things... It helps us a great deal explaining to parents that this mobile device is really an educational device, not a recorder of misdeeds.” Susan Wells Culbreth Middle School USA
  • 35. Mobile email for teachers in busy schools... Email is still a key communication tool in our schools. Even today, it often overlooked by busy teachers who haven’t opened their notebook and logged into their edumail account for a while..... This problem is negated by the iPod touch with email access, communications reign again!
  • 36. Understanding the netbook vs mobile question ‘A new class of mobile Internet devices generally referred to as netbooks — relatively inexpensive personal computers What device would that run basic productivity soft ware and access the Internet — are driven more by you ask parents in institutional recommendations and your school requirements than by personal choice, but community to pay / are nonetheless making their way into the contribute towards hands of students.’ when implementing (ANZ Horizon report 2009) a 1-to-1 program? CC: Interactive question
  • 37. ‘One of the big advantages of the iPod Touch us that every kid wants one. Carrying a laptop/netbook around is seen as nerdy by many kids. Anything you have to unpack from a bag, wait to boot up, open a program etc is also prohibitive with respect to time. The iTouch is instant - and it's cool, which makes it appealing to pretty much every kid.’ Deon Scanlon St Aloysius Tasmania, Australia ‘In terms of netbooks Vs iPod touches I believe they both have huge educational potential - my concern with all this hardware in schools including wireless net works, iPod touches, laptops and so on is the pedagogical principles behind why, how, when etc we are using them. It is all well and good to use netbooks and or iPod touches in the classroom but do they really improve student outcomes? I guess in our case time will tell. I guess our vision is anytime, anywhere learning.’ Stacey Kelly DET rural and Distance Ed NSW Australia
  • 38. ‘Whilst some have criticised you here for going for the iPod over the notebook, they perhaps haven't realised that a Touch in Australia costs half the price of most netbooks (and yet provides about 90% of the functionality).’ A Peterson Classroom 2.0 ‘When we handed this tool to all staff in our middle school last August management apps for the K-12 environment weren't yet written. Today there are many to choose from. Again and again we believe we made the right decision with the iPod touches for our school.’ Susan Wells Culbreth Middle School USA ‘I totally agree - its such a flexible easy to use platform. Cost of devices is still a bit of a factor, but that will change. And yeah, there are more and more proper management tools out now. Actually alot of Australian schools are using Studywiz mobile, part of the Studywiz learning management system and they really like it.’ Jonathon Nalder ADE Queensland Australia
  • 39. ‘Here in Maine we are 1-to-1 in grades 7-8 and many of our 9-12 high schools and my sense is that we will be migrating to smaller devices in future rollouts. Maybe just letting students that don't have their own, check them out of the library/media center. Who knows?! Time will tell!’ Shawn Kimball Maine MLTI
