Film Studies

 Sixth Form Open Evening
Langley Park School for Girls
The Importance of Film Studies
• It is an in-depth study of one medium and
  understanding the historical, economic and
  social contexts that surround it

• The ability to appreciate films as more than just
  entertainment

• Units specifically devised to improve research
  skills and practical film-making skills
What do we do in Film Studies?
What do we do not do in Film Studies?

• We do a close study of a number of
  diverse films
• We do not watch the latest blockbuster
  films on a regular basis
What do we do in Film Studies?
What do we do not do in Film Studies?

• We are interested in concept of ‘film stars’
and how they are used to sell a film
• We do not discuss the latest OK!
  magazine gossip involving Brangelina
What do we do in Film Studies?
What do we do not do in Film Studies?

• We do make 1 film production to show our
  learning of different film concepts
  practically
• We do not spend more than 8 weeks on
this practical production. Instead, more of
the course is dedicated to film analysis
How is the course designed?
• AS Year:

• FM1: Exploring Film Form (20%- Coursework)

One analysis of how the micro aspects of a chosen extract from
a film of candidate's choice produce meanings and responses
    (1500 words)
+ One creative project (storyboard or screenplay) based on a
    film sequence or short film

• FM2: British and American Film (30%- Exam)

Three questions, one from each section:
Section A: Response to stimulus material set by based on
    producers and audiences of film
Section B: Topics in British Film
Section C: US Film - Comparative study of two films
How is the course designed?
• A2 Year:

• FM3: Film Research and Creative Projects (25%- Coursework)

A small-scale research project (essay) and a creative project

• FM4: Varieties of Film Experience: Issues and Debates (25%-
    Exam)

Three questions, one from each section:
    Section A: World Cinema topics
    Section B: Spectatorship topics
Section C: Single Film - Critical Study
Why do Film Studies at LPGS?
• It is an academic subject- the
understanding and appreciation of an art
form provides skills well beyond film
• Small classes
• Specialised teaching
• Students enjoy it- films chosen that both
  reflect and challenge their tastes
Why do Film Studies at LPGS?
• Results:

- AS Level 100 % A-C in 2012
- A2 Level 100% A-C in 2012
Film Studies not Media Studies?
• Media Studies is more practical. You will
not study/watch a single full film in Media
  Studies throughout the 2 years

• Film Studies better for independent
  learners
• Film Studies is more about textual
  analysis
