2. Open Data Kit (ODK)
• Set of tools, author, collect and manage
mobile data collection on an android
device
• Free
• Open source
• Software development by ODK community
3. ODK tools
• Build a data collection form or
survey (XLSForm is recommended
for larger forms)
• Collect the data on a mobile device
and send it to a server
• Aggregate the collected data on a
server and extract it in useful
formats.
4. Survey
• NCD survey at two sites in Malawi
• 5 electronic questionnaires
• 3 languages English, Chichewa Tumbuka
• Questionnaires range from a 21 page
form to single page
5. ODK Process
• Design form for mobile device (
build, Excel or 3rd party design tools)
• Transfer form to tablet (wireless or
cable)
• Collect data
• Upload data from tablet
7. ODK Aggregate Server
• provide blank forms to ODK Collect
• accept finalised forms (submissions)
from ODK Collect
• visualise the collected data using maps
and simple graphs
• export data (e.g., as CSV files for
spreadsheets, or as KML files for Google
