1. Question 4: Who would be the
audience for your media product?
AS Media Studies Evaluation – Lucy Blowing
2. Target Audience
My magazine genre was Alternative Rock, so I intended on a
teenage/young adult audience who love and listen to that
Genre.
For research into target markets, I went onto uktribes.com
And looked through the alternative section. There were
Sub-genre’s such as metalheads, emos, punks, etc. However,
I wanted to stick to the overall group of alternative.
In my research, I found that this social group typically have a
High consumption of media, especially compared to other
Groups. Magazines like NME and Kerrang! Came up a lot in
My research as well.
3. Research & Knowledge
of the Social Group
It is difficult to stereotype the alternative as a whole, as many
people believe that alternatives don’t actually fit a group, so I’ve
researched stereotypes of the sub genres and put them together:
• Wear darker colours
• But also like bold colours (such as red)
• Like to wear odd clothes, skinny jeans and band tees usually
• The girls also stick to band tees, however like to over-accessorize
• Outgoing hairstyles (Punk)
• Highly active on online sites and photo sharing sites
• Really dependent on technology
• Serious and passionate about their music and bands
• Into/have tattoos and piercings
• Participate in a lot of concerts and festivals
4. Research & Knowledge
of the Social Group
Here I have all the different bands and styles the alternative group are
into, which I have mentioned and included in my magazine to further
attract the group and make my magazine fit into the genre.
Examples of alternative/rock bands:
• Sleeping With Sirens
• Foo Fighters
• Sum41
• Blink 182
• Bring Me The Horizon
• Paramore
I included a variation of sub-genre bands, as they all match up to be
Alternative – Some may say Bring Me The Horizon is more a
screamo/emo sounding band, and Foo Fighters is an older style of
rock. Bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam are ‘Grunge’ Rock.
6. Attracting My Audience
• The bold red on my front cover is eye-catching and
alongside the black and white matches the typical
colours of the group
• The model has eye-contact and her clothing
imitates what the female members of the
audience would like to wear themselves
• The other models also wear alternative style
clothing, to imitate the male audience
• Mentioning big and favourite Alt-rock bands on
the front cover and putting them in bold on my
contents
• The language is laid back, fun, informal and in
some areas, offensive
7. Model Clothing
I represented my target market
through the clothes my models were
wearing, and I tried to focus on:
• Darker colours were used
• Bands T-shirts
• Jeans/skinny jeans
• Eyeliner for females
• Punk and ‘gothic’ accessories
• Bold Red
8. Articles and Content
In my contents page, I included a competition to
meet two iconic band members in this genre and
advertised reading festival which is one of the
biggest festivals for people in this social group.
I included articles on different alternative/rock
bands and referred to certain band members, who
are idolized and could attract the audience to that
article.
On my contents, for the majority of my content
listing, I simply just put the name of the band, which
would interest and intrigue the audience further.
