  1. HI everyone, my name is Luke Sinclair – and Im the Community Manager at AMP, and I look after our intranet, online collaboration and also our Yammer communities. Im going to talk to you today a bit about social media, and more to the point how this can medium of communicating can integrate into a blue chip company like AMP and WHY in fact we think this might even be the future of how we communicate at work! First I want to show you a short video, to set the scene.
  2. It’s always hard to follow that video, it’s got amazing energy and a lot of mind boggling facts. 100 minutes of video.Social media isnt a fad – it’s a fundamental change in the way we communicate. This is such an important message for us to take away today.
  3. So where did social media come from? In 1978 early web browsers were distributed through Usenet, an early day bulletin board. In the 80’s BBS Bulletin Board Services were popular, local dial up services, run from peoples basements you would literally call up and play games and message each other etc. In 1997 – Microsoft buys hotmail. This brought about about prolific spread of email to hundreds of millions of people. And quickly saw lots of competitors/similar services pop up. The same year, AOL launched instant messenger, by 2006 they had 53 million users. Friendster 2002 and MySpace 2004 were first off the real social media rank….. In 2004 a new player was born and by 2008 my space had pretty much had its day.
  4. But soon after in 2004 arrived FACEBOOK. Most of us have seen the social network, so I don’t need to go through how this came about! But in a nutshell, it was originally designed as a way of connecting college students at Harvard. And we’ve seen a whole lot of other social networks emerge in fact there are hundreds.
  5. Most of them we’ve never heard of or used, but they exist for niche audiences. Everyone who has a facebook account please stand up. Sit down if you never log in. What about if you log in but never post, sit down. Sit down if you post a message say, once a month. What about once a week. Every day? Cool – interesting. And the most important thing there is that nearly all of you are familiar with the facebook format.
  6. \\
  7. If you’re a chocaholic, you’re probably wishing you could lick through the screen right now. Is being addicted a bad thing? And why is social media so addictive?Social media is called that, because its exactly that – SOCIAL. It taps into our raw human primal drive – to be a social creature. Ever gone to the internet and clicked on something, and then five hours later your still sitting there clicking away? They refer to this as the DOPAMINE effect. Theres lots of research and stories going around, but the way I understand it is that basically dopamine creation is associated with reward seeking behaviours…. So basically you jump on facebook and get short snippets of information which is ideally suited to stimulate dopamine production in our brains and thus we get addicted…! Do some googling about this, theres lots of information online!
  8. But what does it mean for us in Business? Well, just like in the 90’s hotmail trained the general population to become familiar with email as a communication tool, and this is the same time we saw the growth of email as a bona fide business tool, Facebook is now EDUCATING us for the next phase of business communication tools. Our expectations of communications are shifting, we expect our coporate intranets to deliver news to us in video, to have social features we can share, and like and comment on, it is expected that we can speak our mind, and not get in trouble, but join the conversation!
  9. At AMP we use an application called YAMMER. Among the fastest growing enterprise software companies in history, exceeding over three million users in just three years Yammer is our very own secure online social network only for AMP employees, were we can connect, share information, talk about projects or market insights, find experts, discuss files, as questions! The list goes on. Yammer allows you to tap into the knowledge of the crowd by opening up your thoughts and questions to the whole of AMP. It breaks down silos, flattens hierachy, and unleashes pockets of expertise. Who in the room is using Yammer already? Im going to show you a short video we made for the enterprise wide launch of Yammer, then we will take a quick tour of the site.
  10. One of the biggest ways we get our executive and senior leaders onto Yammer is by getting them mobile. We saw in the video at the beginning that over 50% of mobile internet traffic in the Uk comes from facebook. Social applications acknowledge this, and Yammer is no exception! The mobile apps are available to download on all your devices – iphone, ipad android blackberry (ETC!) and you do not need to get axa tech or the CSC involved. Simply visit the app store and download, enter your user name and password. The great benefit of this is that you don’t need to be tethered to your desk to use Yammer! You can be on the train, at the bus stop, at the airport, on the road. A great tool to stay in touch!
  11. So whats the point? COLLABORATIONCollaboration is a working practice whereby individuals work together to a common purpose to achieve business benefit. Awareness – Being aware of whats going on at AMP. Reliance less on team meetings but actually observing real time messages abiout project and business status. Motivation – the drive to gain concensus on our work, or to solve our problems. Participation – reciprocal particapion on our work. Sharing, receiving feedback and having others
  12. While its premature to say this is the DEATH OF EMAIL, and im not sure if you’ve read lately a lot of news about this notion going around, But it is a REAL reality that the paradigm of communication has shifted. Whilst we are not saying that this will REPLACE email, it has the real power to significantly reduce email traffic. There are definite efficiencies that can arise from opening the conversation to more than a few people. More people answering your question, more people likely to have the right answer, more chance of the answer not being repeated like in a reply all. And the fact that you don’t need to sift through rows and rows in an email browser, just visit the notifications tab in yammer and review all of your notifications in one place. There is also the serendipity of discovering information and getting responses from people you would never think to email.
  13. Digital divide – There are over 300,000 kids living in remote and very remote Australia who do not have access to the digital connectivity that we take for granted. Can you imagine a world without your iphone, no google maps to give you directions, no facebook or internet access or wikipedia.
  14. I thought I’d briefly tell you the story of One Laptop Per Child and the work that IT@AMP did in 2011 with this charity action group. They aim to provide a laptop to every school age kid in these areas By 2014 and really to provide them with the equality – WHERE ALL AUSTRALIAS ARE CONNETED TO OPPORTUNITY. Last year Amplify partnered up with these guys and we managed to raise over $40,000 which fitted out an entire classroom of kids with the XO laptop at the Acacia Hill School in Alice Springs. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit the school, and experience the tangible outcome of the effort we made. Keep your eye on the Hub this year. Because I really hope we will do this again, and it’s a great and really fullfilling experience we will invite everyone to get involved in.

Im going to leave you with a video which has nothing to do with social media. BUT I want you to watch this real life community in action and think about how it might apply to the digital flocks online. Just like the QantasLuxury stuff, the first time I saw this it really resonated with me about human behaviour online and how its replicated in nature, content is exchanged, there is electricity and movement.
  18. Welcome Social Software for business. So what’s this all about? Social software enables real time, conversation with many. Like when you send an email to a group and they click reply all, social software, just like facebook, threads the conversation, and allows everyone to participate at the same time. Gone are the long email trails!!!!!!
