Docker Desktop is probably the most common way to work with Linux containers on Windows 10. Also, Microsoft continues to improve Windows 10 and offers with the Windows Subsystem for Linux a very good platform to work natively with Linux. Microsoft is currently preparing a new version of WSL 2, which for the first time brings a real Linux kernel. This makes operation of the Docker Engine under WSL possible. Microsoft and Docker are working closely together to optimally enable the running of Linux containers under WSL 2. This talk will show what is going to improve on Docker Desktop on the upcoming Windows 10 version 20H1. The current status can already be tried out with the Windows Insider program and the Technical Preview of Docker Desktop.

OSv is a new, high-performance OS for virtual machines in the cloud. Designed to run one application per guest with minimal overhead, OSv eliminates important bottlenecks for NoSQL applications through improvements in memory management, network I/O, and scheduling. And many important bottlenecks for NoSQL applications are tunable on a conventional OS, but do not require tuning in the OSv environment. OSv is fully stateless and can be configured at runtime with cloud-init or through a REST API, with zero configuration files. OSv offers unified tracing from the application layer through the JVM and the OS kernel. Attendees will learn how to boot Cassandra in one second, and create a simple cluster in a minute.

Over the last six years, Galois has been developing the Haskell Lightweight Virtual Machine, or HaLVM, a lightweight virtual machine that runs directly on the Xen hypervisor. The HaLVM's design is based on a notion of minimalism: Authors of HaLVM domains include only those libraries and features they require, allowing the HaLVM to have a very small initial resource footprint that scales in a very obvious fashion. In doing so, we hope to combine the minimalism and flexibility of a small kernel with an extended set of libraries with the simplicity and reliability of the strongly typed, high-level language Haskell. While initially designed for running operating system design experiments, the HaLVM has grown over time to be a suitable platform for writing simple network appliances with a very narrow resource footprint. This work has been enabled by other Galois projects: a TCP-compliant network stack written in Haskell, and a fairly-complete file system written in Haskell. In the end, because we use Haskell and provide these libraries at the Haskell level, programmers can create complex software structures quickly, easily, and with the added assurance that the Haskell type system provides. In this talk, we will provide an overview of the HaLVM and its design principles - pointing out where the HaLVM shines and where it is weak - and continue with some of our experiences using it over the last six years.

Nowadays there is significant diversity in Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) clouds. The differences span from virtualization technology and hypervisors, through storage and network configuration, to the cloud management APIs. These differences make migration of a VM (or a set of VMs) from a private cloud into a public cloud, or between different public clouds, complicated or even impractical for many use-cases. HVX is a virtualization platform that enables complete abstraction of underlying cloud infrastructure from the application virtual machines. HVX allows deployment of existing VMs into the cloud without any modifications, mobility between the clouds and easy duplication of the entire deployment. HVX can be deployed on almost any existing IaaS cloud. Each instance of the HVX deployment packs in a nested hypervisor, virtual hardware, network and storage configuration. Combined with image store and management APIs, the HVX can be used for the creation of a virtual cloud that utilizes existing cloud provider infrastructure as the hardware rather than using physical servers, switches and storage.

In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering.
