2. Websites
Strengths – Websites are evolving to be more interactive to fit the needs of an
audience that is becoming more active rather than passive. Because of changes in
technology over the past five years, it has become easier to update and change
websites to fulfil these needs. David Gauntlett would argue that we are in the age of
web 2.0 and 3.0, which is described as interactive information sharing for more active
audiences with web-based communities (i.e. social media.)
Weaknesses – If a person does not have an internet connection, they cannot access
websites.
Harmful content can now me accessed easily by anybody with an internet
connection.
Opportunity – A wide range of useful content is now easily accessible for anybody
with an internet connection.
It has become easier for people to connect and keep in contact with other people
all across the world.
People can now easily advertise their trade by creating and publishing websites.
Threat – Hackers, fraud, virus’/Trojans, cyber bullying.
3. Film
Strengths – People will always want to watch films, it is not likely to go out of fashion.
New technology can be used to create more realistic special effects to make a film
more realistic.
People use film to escape from reality (Jesse Schell.)
People are becoming more interested in independent/low budget films, this means
that it has become easier for lesser known directors to create films.
Weaknesses – There aren’t many jobs in the film industry.
It is becoming easier for people to just watch films online (piracy).
Arguable that people are becoming less-sociable and that the media is replacing
‘real’ human contact.
Opportunity – Audience participation (kick starter.)
Threat – Piracy/Exploitation, the producers miss out on a lot of profit.
4. Radio
Strengths – Easily accessible for most people.
Different stations for different interests/topics, different genres of
music and different ages.
Broadcasts the worldwide/national news.
An old/classic way of communicating.
Weaknesses – It is not visually pleasing or interactive like film or the
internet and therefore it does not keep up with the new active
younger generation.
Opportunity – Competitions, interaction with celebrities, texting in to
get a shout out, traffic updates.
Threat – Not many young people listen to the radio in comparison to
older people like their parents and grandparents.
5. Vlogging
Strengths – A huge audience, some people having over 5 Million subscribers (viewers)
who watch their videos.
Jesse Schell – People use the media as a form of escapism. By watching ‘YouTubers’
daily lives online, they feel as if they can relate to them.
The commons – people can comment and discuss on this content and also ‘like’ and
they can also take the videos and remix them.
Weaknesses – The tragedy of the commons – People can abuse their right to
comment and remix this content by trolling.
People using the vlogs as a form of escapism can be controversial as these people
are merging more and more into celebrity culture every day and therefore it can
distort their view of the way that these people live and they could compare their lives
to theirs.
Opportunity – These people have made a career out of making videos in their
bedrooms and filming their everyday life.
Threat – Never knowing when this culture will go out of fashion, how long will the
viewers be interested seeing as the main demographic is females aged 12-25.
