Over 3,500 people are killed in road accidents every day worldwide, resulting in nearly 1.3 million deaths and 50 million injuries annually. According to one observation, the majority (81%) of accidents are due to driver mistakes, while vehicle faults, pedestrian errors, and other road issues each account for less than 10% of accidents. Common causes of accidents include drivers not yielding to pedestrians, speeding, unsafe passenger transport in freight vehicles, reckless or unskilled driving, pedestrians not taking precautions, animals on roadways, overloading of vehicles, weak law enforcement, and lack of emergency medical services. Safety should be better considered in road engineering efforts.
