6 Title : Essentials of MATLAB® programming
    Author: Stephen J. Chapman.

      - Stephen Chapman's Essentials of MATLAB Programming is a
successful freshman-level text that is useable in a wide range of
courses. This brief text serves two purposes -- it teaches how to
program using MATLAB as a technical programming language as
well as teaching students the basics of computer programming. Using
top-down design methodology, the text encourages students to think
about the proper design of a program before coding. Problem solving
skills as well as the ability to locate desired functions within
MATLAB are also presented making this text a useful reference tool.

7 Title : Discrete choice analysis theory and
    application to travel demand
    Authors Ben-
Authors: Moshe Ben-Akiva, Steven R. Lerman
      - The methods of discrete choice analysis and their applications in the
modelling of transportation systems constitute a comparatively new
field that has largely evolved over the past 15 years. Since its
inception, however, the field has developed rapidly, and this is the
first text and reference work to cover the material systematically,
bringing together the scattered and often inaccessible results for
graduate students and professionals.Discrete Choice Analysis presents
these results in such a way that they are fully accessible to the range
of students and professionals who are involved in modelling demand
and consumer behavior in general or specifically in transportation -
whether from the point of view of the design of transit systems, urban
and transport economics, public policy, operations research, or
systems management and planning. The introductory chapter presents
the background of discrete choice analysis and context of
transportation demand forecasting. Subsequent chapters cover, among
other topics, the theories of individual choice behavior, binary and
multinomial choice models, aggregate forecasting techniques,
estimation methods, tests used in the process of model development,
sampling theory, the nested-logit model, and systems of
models.Moshe Ben-Akiva and Steven R. Lerman are both faculty
members of the Civil Engineering Department at MIT and affiliated
with its Center for Transportation Studies.

8 Title : Measure theory and probability
    Authors
    Authors: Malcolm Adams, Victor Guillemin.
      - Measure theory and integration are presented to undergraduates
from the perspective of probability theory. In fact, discrete
probability theory is taught at many institutions as a freshman
course. The early chapters, going under the rubric of the law of
large numbers, show why measure theory is needed for the
formulation of problems in probability, and explain why one
would have been forced to invent Lebesgue theory (had it not
already existed) to contend with the paradoxes of large numbers.
The measure-theoretic approach then leads to interesting
applications and a range of topics that include the construction of
the Lebesgue measure on Rn (metric space approach), the Borel-
Cantelli lemmas, straight measure theory (the Lebesgue integral).
In this concise text, a number of applications to probability are
packed into the exercises. Contents: Chapter1 Measure Theory

14 Title : Introduction to Probability, 2nd Edition

Author: Dimitri P. Bertsekas and John N. Tsitsiklis.
         - An intuitive, yet precise introduction to probability theory, stochastic
processes, and probabilistic models used in science, engineering,
economics, and related fields. The 2nd edition is a substantial revision
of the 1st edition, involving a reorganization of old material and the
addition of new material. The length of the book has increased by
about 25 percent. The main new feature of the 2nd edition is thorough
introduction to Bayesian and classical statistics.
The book is the currently used textbook for "Probabilistic Systems
Analysis," an introductory probability course at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, attended by a large number of undergraduate
and graduate students. The book covers the fundamentals of
probability theory (probabilistic models, discrete and continuous
random variables, multiple random variables, and limit theorems),
which are typically part of a first course on the subject, as well as the
fundamental concepts and methods of statistical inference, both
Bayesian and classical. It also contains, a number of more advanced
topics, from which an instructor can choose to match the goals of a
particular course. These topics include transforms, sums of random
variables, a fairly detailed introduction to Bernoulli, Poisson, and
           Markov processes.

15 Title : Computational fluid dynamics
     Author: T.J. Chung.
       - The second edition of Computational Fluid Dynamics represents a
significant improvement from the first edition. However, the original
idea of including all computational fluid dynamics methods (FDM,
FEM, FVM); all mesh generation schemes; and physical applications
to turbulence, combustion, acoustics, radiative heat transfer,
multiphase flow, electromagnetic flow, and general relativity is still
maintained. This unique approach sets this book apart from its
competitors and allows the instructor to adopt this book as a text and
choose only those subject areas of his or her interest. The second
edition includes a new section on preconditioning for EBE-GMRES
and a complete revision of the section on flowfield-dependent
variation methods, which demonstrates more detailed computational
processes and includes additional example problems. For those
instructors desiring a textbook that contains homework assignments, a
variety of problems for FDM, FEM, and FVM are included in an
appendix. To facilitate students and practitioners intending to develop
a large-scale computer code, an example of FORTRAN code capable
of solving compressible, incompressible, viscous, inviscid, 1D, 2D,
and 3D for all speed regimes using the flowfield-dependent variation
           method is made available.

16 Title : Quantum theory : concepts and methods
     Author: Asher Peres.
-This book will be useful to anyone who wants to understand the use of
quantum theory for the description of physical processes. It is a graduate
level text, ideal for independent study, and includes numerous figures,
exercises, bibliographical references, and even some computer programs.
The first chapters introduce formal tools: the mathematics are precise, but
not excessively abstract. The physical interpretation too is rigorous. It
makes no use of the uncertainty principle of other ill-defined notions. The
central part of the book is devoted to Bell's theorem and to the Kochen-
Specker theorem. It is here that quantum phenomena depart most radically
from classical physics. There has recently been considerable progress on
these issues, and the latest developments have been included. The final
chapters discuss further topics of current research: spacetime symmetries,
quantum thermodynamics and information theory, semiclassical methods,
irreversibility, quantum chaos, and especially the measuring process. In
particular, it is shown how modern techniques allow the extraction of
more information from a physical system than traditional measurement
methods. For physicists, mathematicians and philosophers of science with
an interest in the applications and foundations of quantum theory. The
volume is suitable as a supplementary graduate textbook.

18 Title : Modular forms, a computational approach
     Author: William Stein
       - This marvellous and highly original book fills a significant gap in the
extensive literature on classical modular forms. This is not just yet
another introductory text to this theory, though it could certainly be
used as such in conjunction with more traditional treatments. Its
novelty lies in its computational emphasis throughout: Stein not only
defines what modular forms are, but shows in illuminating detail how
one can compute everything about them in practice. This is illustrated
throughout the book with examples from his own (entirely free)
software package SAGE, which really bring the subject to life while
not detracting in any way from its theoretical beauty. The author is
the leading expert in computations with modular forms, and what he
says on this subject is all tried and tested and based on his extensive
experience. As well as being an invaluable companion to those
learning the theory in a more traditional way, this book will be a great
help to those who wish to use modular forms in appl --John E.

  • 5. 7 Title : Discrete choice analysis theory and application to travel demand Authors Ben- Authors: Moshe Ben-Akiva, Steven R. Lerman - The methods of discrete choice analysis and their applications in the modelling of transportation systems constitute a comparatively new field that has largely evolved over the past 15 years. Since its inception, however, the field has developed rapidly, and this is the first text and reference work to cover the material systematically, bringing together the scattered and often inaccessible results for graduate students and professionals.Discrete Choice Analysis presents these results in such a way that they are fully accessible to the range of students and professionals who are involved in modelling demand and consumer behavior in general or specifically in transportation - whether from the point of view of the design of transit systems, urban and transport economics, public policy, operations research, or systems management and planning. The introductory chapter presents the background of discrete choice analysis and context of transportation demand forecasting. Subsequent chapters cover, among other topics, the theories of individual choice behavior, binary and multinomial choice models, aggregate forecasting techniques, estimation methods, tests used in the process of model development, sampling theory, the nested-logit model, and systems of models.Moshe Ben-Akiva and Steven R. Lerman are both faculty members of the Civil Engineering Department at MIT and affiliated with its Center for Transportation Studies. Year : 1985 Call No. : HE336.C5 B456
  • 6. 8 Title : Measure theory and probability Authors Authors: Malcolm Adams, Victor Guillemin. - Measure theory and integration are presented to undergraduates from the perspective of probability theory. In fact, discrete probability theory is taught at many institutions as a freshman course. The early chapters, going under the rubric of the law of large numbers, show why measure theory is needed for the formulation of problems in probability, and explain why one would have been forced to invent Lebesgue theory (had it not already existed) to contend with the paradoxes of large numbers. The measure-theoretic approach then leads to interesting applications and a range of topics that include the construction of the Lebesgue measure on Rn (metric space approach), the Borel- Cantelli lemmas, straight measure theory (the Lebesgue integral). In this concise text, a number of applications to probability are packed into the exercises. Contents: Chapter1 Measure Theory Introduction Randomness Measure Theory Measure Theoretic Modeling Chapter 2 Integration Measurable functions The Lebesgue Integral Further Properties of the Integral; Convergence Theorems Lebesgue integration versus Riemann Integration Fubini Theorem Random Variables, Expectations Values, and Independence The Law of Large Numbers The Discrete Dirichlet Problem Chapter 3 Fourier Analysis L 1 Theory L 2 Theory The Geometry of Hilbert Space Fourier Series The Fourier Integral Some Applications of Fourier Series to Probability Theory An Application of Probability The Central Limit Theorem Appendix A, Metric Spaces Appendix B, On L p Matters References Index Year : 1996 Call No. : QA273 A215

It also contains, a number of more advanced topics, from which an instructor can choose to match the goals of a particular course. These topics include transforms, sums of random variables, a fairly detailed introduction to Bernoulli, Poisson, and Markov processes. 2008 Year : 2008 Call No. : QA273 B551 2008 15 Title : Computational fluid dynamics Author: T.J. Chung. - The second edition of Computational Fluid Dynamics represents a significant improvement from the first edition. However, the original idea of including all computational fluid dynamics methods (FDM, FEM, FVM); all mesh generation schemes; and physical applications to turbulence, combustion, acoustics, radiative heat transfer, multiphase flow, electromagnetic flow, and general relativity is still maintained. This unique approach sets this book apart from its competitors and allows the instructor to adopt this book as a text and choose only those subject areas of his or her interest. The second edition includes a new section on preconditioning for EBE-GMRES and a complete revision of the section on flowfield-dependent variation methods, which demonstrates more detailed computational processes and includes additional example problems. For those instructors desiring a textbook that contains homework assignments, a variety of problems for FDM, FEM, and FVM are included in an appendix. To facilitate students and practitioners intending to develop a large-scale computer code, an example of FORTRAN code capable of solving compressible, incompressible, viscous, inviscid, 1D, 2D, and 3D for all speed regimes using the flowfield-dependent variation method is made available. • 11. 16 Title : Quantum theory : concepts and methods Author: Asher Peres. -This book will be useful to anyone who wants to understand the use of quantum theory for the description of physical processes. It is a graduate level text, ideal for independent study, and includes numerous figures, exercises, bibliographical references, and even some computer programs. The first chapters introduce formal tools: the mathematics are precise, but not excessively abstract. The physical interpretation too is rigorous. It makes no use of the uncertainty principle of other ill-defined notions. The central part of the book is devoted to Bell's theorem and to the Kochen- Specker theorem. It is here that quantum phenomena depart most radically from classical physics. There has recently been considerable progress on these issues, and the latest developments have been included. The final chapters discuss further topics of current research: spacetime symmetries, quantum thermodynamics and information theory, semiclassical methods, irreversibility, quantum chaos, and especially the measuring process. In particular, it is shown how modern techniques allow the extraction of more information from a physical system than traditional measurement methods. For physicists, mathematicians and philosophers of science with an interest in the applications and foundations of quantum theory. The volume is suitable as a supplementary graduate textbook. This is not just yet another introductory text to this theory, though it could certainly be used as such in conjunction with more traditional treatments. Its novelty lies in its computational emphasis throughout: Stein not only defines what modular forms are, but shows in illuminating detail how one can compute everything about them in practice. This is illustrated throughout the book with examples from his own (entirely free) software package SAGE, which really bring the subject to life while not detracting in any way from its theoretical beauty. The author is the leading expert in computations with modular forms, and what he says on this subject is all tried and tested and based on his extensive experience. As well as being an invaluable companion to those learning the theory in a more traditional way, this book will be a great help to those who wish to use modular forms in appl --John E. Cremona, University of Nottingham William Stein is an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Washington at Seattle. He earned a PhD in mathematics from UC Berkeley and has held positions at Harvard University and UC San Diego. His current research interests lie in modular forms, elliptic curves, and computational mathematics. 2007 Year : 2007 Call No. : QA243 S819
