   Write and equation to show how Bromine reacts with
   water.



2. The Na+ ion has a smaller radius than the Ne atom.
   Explain why this is so.
   Even though Na is in period 3 and has a third shell while
   Ne is a noble gas in period 2 and only has two shells the
   Na+ ion loses its outermost third shell when it loses its
   valence electron. The extra proton that sodium has also
   serves to pull the two remaining shells in closer.
3. Why do elements in a given group of the periodic
   table show similar chemical properties.
   Groups share the same chemical characteristics due
   to having the same number of valence electrons.

4. What change in charge takes place as a metal loses
   one or more electrons.
   The metal becomes a positive ion and its ionic radius
   decreases.
5. Why do the elements of a given period always follow
   the progression of metal to metalloid to nonmetal to
   noble gas.
   Because as you move from left to write within a
   period (increasing atomic number) you pass through
   all of the different groups on the table.

      periodic table?

      the atom of each metal having only one valence electron?

3.    Element M was obtained from a meteorite sample. Experiments
      have determined that the element is a member of Group 2 on the

          atom of element M.

      forms chemical bonds in the same way as calcium does?

   Ge and As (Period 4)
   Sb and Te (Period 3)

2. Describe one chemical property of Group 1 metals
   that results from the atom of each metal having only
   one valence electron?
   Highly Reactive, Group 1 metals all become ions with
   a +1 charge.
3. Element M was obtained from a meteorite sample.
   Experiments have determined that the element is a member
   of Group 2 on the periodic table.

   a.   What phase of matter would element M be at STP
        Solid.

   b.   Explain why the radius of a positive ion of element M is smaller than
        an atom of element M.
        The radius of positive ions is smaller than the atomic radii because
        one or more electrons have been lost.

4. Using information from the periodic table, explain why
   radium forms chemical bonds in the same way as calcium
   does?
   Radium (Ra) and Calcium (Ca) are both Alkali Earth Metals
   (Group 2) on the periodic table and elements and each has
   two valence electrons therefore there chemical reactivitites
   will be similar.

  • 2. 1. Chlorine reacts with water in the following reaction… Write and equation to show how Bromine reacts with water. 2. The Na+ ion has a smaller radius than the Ne atom. Explain why this is so. Even though Na is in period 3 and has a third shell while Ne is a noble gas in period 2 and only has two shells the Na+ ion loses its outermost third shell when it loses its valence electron. The extra proton that sodium has also serves to pull the two remaining shells in closer.

Groups share the same chemical characteristics due to having the same number of valence electrons. 4. What change in charge takes place as a metal loses one or more electrons. The metal becomes a positive ion and its ionic radius decreases.
