Running Head: TECHNOLOGY AND CULTURE 1 Running head: TITLE 2 How the internet and the social media are affecting Institutional Affiliations Name Date The advent of the internet and the social media has helped to transform human life to more creative and enlightened existence (O'Keeffe et al.,2013).The internet has helped to transform education, work, and communication making it easier than ever before. For many years humanity has been seeking simple ways of communicating to enhance socialization, work, and business (Livingstone,2004). However what has appeared to be the solution to barriers of communication and geographical distances has turned out to be harmful. The internet has caused multiple problems to the youth and children. They are exposed to adult material and cyber bullying. Businesses that have adopted it solutions have also been exposed to cyber security issues like hacking. Regulatory mechanisms, as well as security policies, need to be introduced to solve the new problems that technology solutions have come with. For example, social media sites have to come up with ways of minimizing cyber bullying. Superior technological solutions to counteract hacking should also be explored (Mangold et al.,2004). Other new problems that might be introduced include internet addiction. For example, the youth spend so much of their time visiting social media sites instead of helping up with constructive tasks of making the society better. Issues of cybercrime are also expected to morph into more sophisticated forms that may not be easy to deal with unless a comprehensive mechanism is created (Van Dijck,2013). Businesses and those who are socially privileged can acquire special political and economic power; this is because they have the ease and the capacity to harness technological advantage for their benefit compared to the less privileged (Jenkins et al.,2009). New technology has created a breeding site for the development of slang, and traditional ways of communication are becoming archaic slowly by slowly. The digital divide has serious consequences in the information society. If ‘information is power’ why is creativity one of the key focuses concentration areas in the UKs Digital Economy Act? Main points to focus on when reading for this topic: The digital divide – all reading in regards to this point Information society – Castells work in regards to this point UK Digital Economy Act – Read the act and find out more about concentration areas, spefically, Creativity. TOPIC POINT – Internet access plays a vital part in a modern society Networks (Castells) His hypothesis: the historical superiority of vertical/hierarchical organizations. That non centred networked form of social organization had material limits to overcome. Fundamentally linked to available technologies. Networks have strength in their flexibility, adaptability and capacity to self configure Global Networks · Digital networks are global, as they have the capacity to reconfigure themselves, as directed by their programmers, transcending territorial and institutional boundaries through telecommunicated computer networks (pp 24) · The global society is a networked society and exclusion from these networks is ‘tantamount to structural marginalisation in the global network society’ (Castells, 2009: 25) Limitations of materials. Benefits from global networks: access to bigger markets and a variety of producers. Breaking down the value chain. States – the network state · State have sovereignty in specific territories; has ultimate legislative powers; the power of force (police/army); and have citizens. They are the ones who have an existent power relationships. They are very powerful: control the material form of power (guns, armies, war, police, army) and they have power over the citizens. · With globalisation and networks these powers affect the sovereignty of the state which has to alter/transform to adapt to these dynamic situations A. They associate together – ASEAN; EU; NATO; etc. – G20 at the ‘top of the pecking order’ B. Dense networks of international organisations to deal with international issues (UN; WTO; IMF; World Bank etc.) C. Nation states devolve powers to regional bodies and sometimes NGOs to overcome a crisis of political legitimacy. The material we discussed in last weeks lecture details the role of the State in the UK Organisations – the network organization · Castells points to the rise of the network enterprise as a response to the needs to increased flexibility and autonomy. · Large organisations are divided internally into networks; small ones are parts of larger networks. · These networks are dynamic and not stable and may (re)form around specific projects as alliances and partnerships. · The unit of production is the business project not the firm though it is still the ‘legal unit of capital accumulation.’ · Financial valuation remains key and global financial markets are key in a network economy. Knowledge Gap Hypothesis: Introduction: This theory is concerned mainly with “information” and “knowledge” and emphasizes that knowledge is not distributed equally throughout society. There are haves and have-nots with regard to information just as material wealth Information is very important in our society because any developed country depends on well-informed citizens. It appears certain that information will be even more important in the future as we move into an increasingly technological age. Many contemporary issues will require information and an informed public for the solutions for such issues. Role of mass communication: * One of the great promises of mass communication is that it provides people with information they need. * It has the potential of reaching people who have not been reached by other means (poor and undeveloped people). One example of an effort to use mass communication to provide information to the disadvantaged is the “educational TV program” Sesame Street (which combined information with entertainment for preschool Children.). Other mass communication efforts that have the advantage of getting information to people usually not reached is the televised presidential debates that might take the presidential election campaigns to people who would not normally be exposed to the campaign. The attempts to increase people’s quantities of information from mass media might have some unexpected or undesirable effects. This undesirable possibility is that mass communication might actually have the effect of increasing the gap in knowledge between members of different social classes. This possibility is called: “ Knowledge gap Hypothesis”. The authors of Knowledge Gap Hypothesis: • § The Knowledge Gap Hypothesis was first proposed in 1970 by Tichenor, Donohue and OLien. Mostly, it is known as Tichenor et al or Tichenor and his colleagues’ hypothesis. Tichenor et al . Stated the KG Hypothesis as follow: “As the infusion of mass media information into a social system increases, segments of the population with higher socio-economic status tend to acquire this information at a faster rate than the lower status segments, so that the gap in knowledge between these two segments tend to increase rather than decrease”. The hypothesis predicts that: • § People of both high and low socioeconomic status will gain in knowledge because of the additional information, but that persons of higher socioeconomic status will gain more. • § This would mean that the relative gap in knowledge between the well-to-do and less well-off would increase. Tichenor and his colleagues suggest that: The K. G. is particularly likely to occur in such areas of general interest as public affairs and science news. It is less likely to occur in more specific areas that are related to people’s particular interests-areas like sports or garden care.

These are the visual slides for my presentation for the Online Round Table / Session #3 – mLearning: Abstract:The application of computer-generated imagery in live-video streams on mobile devices, as a way to expand the real-world, is finally available for the masses on an affordable basis. Augmented and mixed-reality scenarios are now a common fixture of our technology arsenal of methods to acquire information about our surroundings. This emergence of augmented reality (AR) also has great potential to support individual and group learning. I will share thoughts and experiences on how AR will change the way we view and experience learning in a situated context.
